Walk to Junkanoo Beach Nassau

How long of a walk is Junkanoo Beach from the pier in Nassau? I believe there will be 5 ships in port when we go there in February, does this beach get very busy and is it a nice beach? I saw some photos and it looked pretty decent.

It's a decent beach and a short walk of 20 mins or so. Cab or bus is quite reasonable as well. Have fun!

I would say its a so so beach since its located on the shipping harbour. Cable or Cabbage Beach is much nicer. :)

Often the water temperature in Nassau can be quite chilly in February so keep that in mind. ;)

you guys and thinking the water is chilly...its the Bahamas :eek: water temps rarely dip below about 72-75 degrees. Sure its colder than say mid summer but still plenty bearable to swim in. Now if you are diving....a 5mm suit would be ideal.

Junkanoo beach is so so. its close...maybe 15-20 min walk if you don't stop anywhere along the way. If you only plan to spend an hour or 2 on the beach, its not a bad choice. If you plan to make a day on the beach your game plan then I would choose Cabbage over Junkanoo

Anything along the way to stop and see/do? We plan to spend most of the day on the ship enjoying the emptiness of the ship, but looking for a good "stretch of our legs". Thought this might be a good route to go.

Following... We have a short stay in Nassau so I'd hate to pay for a day pass.

Junkanoo Beach is an easy walk from the port.

We walked past it on our way to Fort Charlotte. Basically...you walk through the typical port booths with venders...past other venders for transportation...cross a street and go down a block to get to the main drag, which is Bay Street.

Bay Street is tourist shopping mecca. IIRC, the sidewalks are covered...there are some fancy shops, some typical tourist/more souvenir oriented type shops, places for food and drink. You keep walking through all this and follow the main drag...

It will curve around to pass the backside of the British Colonial Hilton. We did not go inside here, but I've heard it is a beautiful hotel.

And then, you will soon be at Junkanoo Beach. There are "huts" that sell food. Some have outdoor seating areas. Some of these are very crude...in the most literal sense of the word...they show like a weekender DIY project with flea market finds. Others appear nicer.

Also...there may be a vender or two seller tourist oriented products.

Also...there are venders offering daily rentals of beach related equipment.

If your goal is to have a leisurely morning, enjoy the ship a bit, and then, as you say...talk a walk and see a bit Nassau, then I think making this beach your destination...maybe walking along the sand and the water...and then making a leisure way back to the ship, possibly popping into a shop or two... This is a good plan IMO.

The sand is white, fine, and lovely. Exactly what you would expect to see in the Bahamas. It's a typical day beach...if you have been to a Texas free beach...then you have been to a Junkanoo beach. (I lived for most of my adult life in Texas before moving to GA 2 year ago...). There may be seaweed on the beach...

We didn't get onto this beach, but it seemed to be populated with local families and some cruise passengers. We weren't going for the beach in Nassau...we just walked by.

Do you know if there is any way of seeing Atlantis "inside" without buying a pass. We don't want to do anything, but just look inside the lobby, etc.

Not really, You can't just walk into the lobby. Security will stop you. You can go directly to the casino. Security will show you the way. (no kids allowed) The shops at the Beach and coral tower are public, but you can't enter the Royal towers and walk thru to the other towers.

We took a tour of Nassau with one of the local taxi drivers and he took us to the lobby of Atlantis and dropped us off to wander around, but I am sure we weren't supposed to be there....when we got back to his taxi he asked me if anyone gave us a hard time......:confused:

Thank you everyone for your response to our seeing the "inside" of Atlantis. Actually a friend from church was going to do that a couple weeks ago, and found out, like you all told me, you have to "pay" in a round about way to get inside. So were going to do like my friends did, not see it.

It's a great walk there, not too long at all. Lots of places to see and stop along the way.

The beach itself is nice, not too big and not usually too crowded. Have some good drink deals there, some food options.

I like that fact you can do it at your own pace, doesnt cost a bunch, come and go as you please.....defn a recomend for anyone in Nassau in the day imho.

I am heading back there in 2 weeks for my 4th visit!
