Automatic Gratuities

I'm sure those who are leaving the tips on, and/or tipping extra, are making a more positive difference to a few human beings than those who remove them...and then tip in cash

I would not be so sure of that. On your next vacation ask a staff member if they would prefer cash in the same amount as the auto gratuities or just to leave it as-is. You may be surprised at the answer.

I assure you I don't consider myself a "smashing fella" for tipping $20...for many reasons including that I'm a female. My point to that is this is how I view the auto grats. I also did not say it was wrong or right, just how it works for me. I like knowing that I've at least covered the recommended amount and will tip for anything above the expected service.

 

How and how much you do tip is others business when you type in on a thread about tipping and how $507 isn't measly-if you don't want to share that information then maybe don't jump down peoples throats about it on here. If you tip so well, then what is the magic number?

Did you hear I heard for the taxi driver who drove the Captain to his gold match at port, he said C&A are in the process of creating Pinnacle Plus. I heard only Mario would qualify. Don't yet know how it will apply to perks....

There is exactly zero legitimate and valid reason to remove the charge when you first board.

 

If you choose to not pre pay that's fine. But to immediately declare you won't pay the charge as it is posted daily without having any excuse is just being a crappy guest.

 

And no, no one believes you when you swear you will pay in cash. Especially since the burden then falls on the staff to turn in the funds to be pooled

Back before auto tips we had 4 other couples at our table on a cruise who insisted on bringing their expensive jewelry purchases to the dining room every night to show off. And, they made a point to show the waiter and his assistant all the gold, diamonds and expensive watches they bought acting like Mr. and Mrs. Got Rocks. On the last night we were the only ones at the table. The waiter was very upset because he was only going to get tips for 2 of the 10 people at our table.

He asked us if his service had been bad. We assured him his service was top notch and gave him our tips, which included a whole lot extra once we realized he was getting stiffed.

We ran into the tablemates at the casino where they were gambling away. I confronted them about the tips and they admitted that they had not planned on tipping from the get go. I unloaded about what miserable human beings I thought they were.

And of course they were the ones who demanded the most sending food back, asking to try other items, spilling wine at the table etc and staying there very late, which prevented him from clearing the table and resetting if for the following morning.

Thanks all, even those who chose to get a little pissy. And actually, yes, we are old school and we do tip in cash, and for what it's worth, very well. Just never liked the idea of tipping before service. And we also go on the many comments we've had over the years from crewmembers who told us they prefer cash. So no, we aren't monsters out to rip off the crew.

But you are cutting out some behind the scenes staff out of their tips when you pay in cash.

I am also curious as to what people are tipping who claim to remove the $13/day measly tip, only to turn around and "tip well." If they're tipping so well, then what's the point of removing the portion that's already there? It doesn't make sense to remove tips just to turn around and spend the same amount. Either you're leaving the tips on, and tipping extra in cash above that amount, or you're removing them so you can tip less (or, as many assume, not at all).

 

Or, what could be happening (for those who claim they are tipping more than $13/day), is they are removing the tips for the whole family, and then tipping more than $13/day, but much less than $13/day times their 5 people, and calling it good because they are considering their family unit one group and worthy of one tip for all of them, so in their minds they've convinced themselves they've tipped well for their family unit, but aren't actually tipping the amount for each family member. Maybe? Perhaps? Who knows.

This goes for tipping as well as what the people at the table next to you wear to dinner in the MDR, but this is not the thread for that rant. No one is going to convince anyone they are wrong on a cruise forum and you aren't going to solve the problems of the third world with a few $20 bills. Do what makes you feel responsible and good for the service you get, that is all you can ask of yourself.

Yeah. I suppose you could be right, in some cases maybe. I understand why people don't like the obligation or the "pre-payment," and the debate has been discussed to death about whether it's really a tip or a service charge, or whether people are even getting all the money from Royal or not. I personally choose pay the auto-tips because I know they are expected and they are a part of the calculation of revenue for the ship and therefore, wages for staff, and whether I agree with the practice or not, it doesn't matter, because I believe people deserve to get paid and this is how royal chooses to do their accounting.

 

I don't consider the auto tips a negotiable expense and I don't consider reducing them in order to make my cruise more affordable, or to take a stand against the auto-tipping practice; I simply just tip extra to the people whom I come into contact with directly, which is why I can't see why anyone who is tipping "well" would remove the tips (the additional cash tip has nothing to do with the auto tip, nor am I, or probably anyone else who tips extra, deducting the $13/day from our extra tips calculation). I can't imagine a scenario where I would feel good about myself removing the tips and thinking I'm making a stand against royal's business practice, so I just can't fathom why anyone would bother, given they know ahead of time it's part of what they're expected to pay. However you also have a point that Royal could eliminate the ability to remove them, and so far they haven't, so people can and will continue to remove them, but I'm not, and never will be, one of those people.

 

But hey, to each his own. Nobody is changing the world here on either end, but I'm sure those who are leaving the tips on, and/or tipping extra, are making a more positive difference to a few human beings than those who remove them...and then tip in cash (or don't).

We do the same. Leave the auto tips and tip more to whoever made our cruise special. Toneach their own.

You go to Guest Services and they will give you a form to fill out.

 

It is a simple process.

First of all i have never had to fill out a form to cancel Gratuities.Which is the first thing i do when i board.They scan my card auto Gratuities are gone,And i tip the way i please,and who i please. Gratuities or given not taken.Again after fourteen cruises I don't need royal to decide what to do with my tip money.Have a great next cruise. :)

The cruiseline should pay them. I will remove the automatic gratuity also and will tip cash to the people who serve me directly.
