Wow! These pax went through an ordeal & those waiting to board Sunday are now pushed back a day. Just so thankful everyone is ok. Sounds like NCL stepped up to the plate....crew & corporate...& treated them with such care.

derf5585 Posted April 17, 2005 #10 Share Posted April 17, 2005 "Carnival Triumph in Hurricane Isabel From someone who has sailed on cruise ships in weather like this: There is a big slow push from the floor as the bow rise over a swell, then a slight weightless feeling as the bow drops over the edge, followed by a big shudder that rattles the entire ship as the bow smacks into the bottom of the trough (which seems to be the moment captured in the above picture - keep in mind that ship is 180 feet high above the water and 893 feet in length). I feel just awful for those who had the 62 damage cabins booked that had to cancel the cruise that is scheduled to leavenow on Monday instead of today....has to break your heart to cancel a vacation like that:(
aloha16 Posted April 17, 2005 #12 Share Posted April 17, 2005 I posted this on other board but we had 30' seas at night in Hawaii. We could not leave our cabin and we were tossed about everytime we got up. It knocked us out of bed at one point. We were sailing the old lady SS Independence. Beautiful ship with no stabilizers! I cannot imagine a wave this size hitting a ship but look what a wave did when it hit Indonesia a few months back. This is why is stay in the Caribbean to sail and won't do a Tran-atlantic. I 'll stay in the warner waters-call me chicken :D

Bases5 Posted April 17, 2005 #14 Share Posted April 17, 2005 Norwegian Dawn News Update Miami, Fla., April 16, 2005 5:15pm EST Last night on her return to New York, Norwegian Dawn experienced extremely rough weather. Although the weather had become slightly calmer at daybreak, the ship was hit by a freak wave that caused two windows to break in two different cabins. There was flooding in 62 cabins and four passengers were hurt with cuts and bruises. The safety and integrity of the ship was in no way compromised by this incident. Norwegian Dawn has diverted to Charleston, South Carolina to conduct repairs. Passengers whose cabins were flooded are being flown home from Charleston. Once repairs are complete, the ship will continue to New York. At this time, the company estimates that the ship will arrive around noon on Monday. As things stand now, embarkation will commence at 3 p.m. on Monday. However, the embarkation time will be finalized once the ship has a definitive arrival time so passengers and travel agents should monitor the NCL Web site or call 1-800-625-5672 for updates. NCL is working to contact all travel agents with guests sailing on the April 17 cruise to inform them of the details. The tentative schedule is below: Day Port Arrive Depart 4/18 - Mon New York, NY - - 5pm 4/19 - Tue At Sea 4/20 - Wed Orlando (Port Canaveral), FL 11am 9pm 4/21 - Thu Miami, FL 9am 6pm 4/22 - Fri Nassau, Bahamas 7am Noon 4/23 - Sat At Sea 4/24 - Sun New York, NY 10am In accordance with Norwegian Dawn's Winter Weather Guarantee, guests on the upcoming cruise will receive a $100 per person ($200 maximum per stateroom) onboard credit and additionally, the cruise fare will be prorated by one day, which will be refunded to the passenger's onboard account along with the onboard credit. The company will provide updates as they become available.
marktac Posted April 17, 2005 #15 Share Posted April 17, 2005 Here's what the Drudge Report had posted... 'Freak' wave rocks cruise 70-footer hits N.Y.-bound ship BY JONATHAN LEMIRE DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER A "freak wave" more than 70 feet high slammed a luxury cruise ship steaming for New York yesterday, flooding cabins, injuring passengers and forcing the liner to stop for emergency repairs. The Norwegian Dawn, an opulent ocean liner almost 1,000 feet long, limped into Charleston, S.C., yesterday afternoon after it hit vicious seas in an overnight storm off Florida - then was creamed by the rogue wave after dawn. "[My room] was destroyed by stuff getting thrown all over the place," passenger James Fraley, of Keansburg, N.J., told NBC News before embarking on the 12-hour drive home because he didn't want to set foot on the ship again. "It was pure chaos." The ship, which sailed from New York last Sunday with 2,500 passengers, had been due back today. It weathered most of a wild storm that featured gale-force winds and choppy seas. But then the vessel, longer than three football fields, was suddenly smacked by the "freak wave," said Norwegian Cruise Line spokeswoman Susan Robison. It broke a pair of windows and flooded 62 cabins, she said. "The sea had actually calmed down when the wave seemed to come out of thin air at daybreak," Robison said. "Our captain, who has 20 years on the job, said he never saw anything like it." The tidal wave wrecked windows on the ninth and 10th floors and wreaked havoc below decks, destroying furniture, the onboard theater, and a store that sold expensive gifts. It also injured four passengers and terrified scores more, many of whom lost belongings and were being flown back to New York early this morning. "My daughter said people were freaking out," said Mel Blanck, 74, whose daughter, Caren Hogan, 42, of Matawan, N.J., was vacationing aboard with her family. "She said some doors were ripped off and broken glass was everywhere." In a message Hogan left on her parents' voice mail, she said her ship "feels like the Titanic" and described "water running everywhere, with people getting hurt and panicking." "She felt lucky that she and her children weren't hurt," said Blanck, whose daughter had called from South Carolina last night. "She's calm now, but she said it was a nightmare." The floating city of a ship, which was commissioned in 2002, left New York a week ago for Orlando, Miami and the Bahamas. It had started heading home when it ran into the wicked weather. During the storm, one frightened passenger called a relative who relayed the information to the Coast Guard, which escorted the ship into Charleston yesterday. "The ocean is unforgiving; it doesn't care who is out there," said Petty Officer Bobby Nash of the Coast Guard in Florida. "This could have happened to anyone." Repairs were done last night, and the ship resumed it's voyage around midnight after a team of Coast Guard inspectors gave it approval. Many of the Norwegian Dawn's passengers remained on the ship while it was readied for the sea again, Robison said. The battered vessel is expected to return to New York tomorrow. All passengers would be given a partial refund, a credit for a future trip and access to the ship's open bar, Robison said. burnsie Posted April 17, 2005 #23 Share Posted April 17, 2005 Thank God no one was hurt badly. Was wondering how many of you would stay aboard and take the ride back to NYC. We have been really lucky sailing so far. Last year sailed smack dab in the middle of the four hurricanes and I think we were the only week that was not delayed. We were sailing RCCL and wouldn't have minded a delay of a day and getting credit of in some case half off the next cruise or sailing around an extra two days. Years back when the passengers got stuck for the night on RCCL private island I would have loved to been there. What a way to camp for the night. Bonfire on an island in the Bahamas. Sure beat some of the Boy Scout/Girl Scout trips I've been on! Anyway would you have stayed on the ship! Me I'm there if my family is not hurt we sail!
