  1. Some warm spring weather which is pleasant in the garden and for walking. Dislike really hot weather but it looks as if we are locked in for summer, cannot leave the country. Hopefully the bushfire season will not be as bad as last year. Painful listening to all the political fights over borders and even koala bears. Distressing to hear how some people are suffering as a consequence of the virus and the restrictions to their ability to be with family or friends. Annoying to hear officials say some people add monetary value and are exempt from freedom of movement and even quarantine in some cases. Nevertheless we must be obedient and comply or suffer the consequences. Saw a report one of the health people telling people to make their bed every day and it would improve their mental health. Wash your hands. Almost childlike messages. Easy for those still receiving large 6 figure plus salaries to lecture to the downtrodden. Meanwhile we read of the stuff ups in the hotel quarantine inquiry and statements that no one was in charge!! Bizarre and dangerous risks with peoples welfare and safety. Its like something from another century or country. Take care.
  2. https://thepointsguy.com/news/croisieurope-river-cruise-covid-outbreak/ this is another article about the outbreak. Hope all recover. It is very unfortunate but can see why people and businesses want to try. Eventually we can again travel but its not looking possible in the short term. As much as we would like to do so.
  3. Still hopeful cruising will begin again. Certainly there are some cruises, now albeit short ones. A couple we know are booked on the Murray Princess soon, only 3 nights and not exactly luxury but its something. The mask situation would not be 24/7 surely? Only in public areas or if you cannot social distance? Not sure how people manage to eat/drink with masks? In places like Qatar and Dubai discreetly lift the face covering to eat. Such chaos at present we all need something to look forward too.
  4. Yes here and globally challenging for many. But we must carry on and hope things will improve eventually. At least people can draw on memories of happier times. Talk of a vaccine today but it has not yet passed clinical trials. Plans to make it locally and distribute it elsewhere. Still along way off. Then there were remarks about it being mandatory but that upset some people. Some rules are necessary others seem too severe, especially when people see things are not improving despite the sacrifices being made. Anyway as said we can continue to communicate and think/plan for better times. Be wonderful to escape somewhere and wait for this to pass. Take care.
  5. We are in Australia too and totally locked in, no outbound travel and no date of when that will end. We have also closed the state borders and this has resulted in people who live in communities near the borders hardship. Some live on 1 side but children go to school on the other side, likewise for work and healthcare. Exemptions can be given but not many are issued. 1 family living on a farm have moved into a caravan which is on the state side that permits the children to go to school. Hopefully the authorities will address these issues. Heavy fines are being issued unsure how some will be able to pay. Military also are assisting. It is surreal. Meanwhile we were told a group of 300 people will jet in from china via Singapore because they are full paying fees for Uni places. This is despite thousands of Australians still trying to return faced with difficulties getting in bound flights and quotas around how many can fly in. Those who can fly in have 14 day managed hotel quarantine and tested twice for covid. Some have escaped. Hotel quarantine was badly managed allowing covid to spread and multiple people in aged care are dying every day. Hospitals in some places are refusing to take aged care people, returning them straight back. Truly vile and not like anything most have experienced in their lifetime. Good to have happy memories of travel and wish those times may begin again. Take care.
  6. Wish them all the best. Looks as if the line does a lot of short cruises in the med? Given the pandemic does anyone know how many people died from covid infected via cruising? Cruising has had bad press but wonder if the evidence is there around deaths? Every person who has suffered is a tragedy but given what is happening in aged care the number of deaths seem much worse in that environment??
  7. One of the issues at the Adelaide oval was reported to be public transport and queuing that compromised social distancing. Difficult situation. All want things to return to pre covid for many reasons.
  8. Not looking very promising at present. Reading about 2 cruises with covid. 1 was an artic cruise, the other was in the pacific, a Ponant i think. Frustrating reading about imported cases here too. Some from Victoria. A few have self isolated at home with 7 family members, police had to go and remind 1to get tested, positive and some of the family, quarantined. Another went to 2 schools, both had to be closed. The qld case direct flight Kabaul to Sydney then to qld. Apparently exempt from isolation. Positive, some doubt he was a consular employee as stated. Meanwhile Melbourne is locked down with restrictions. 2 planes expected from India into Adelaide. Hopefully they are all checked and protocol followed. Large crowd at the football tonight reported. When will this ever end? ,
  9. grim story and conditions by the sounds of that report for the crew.
  10. Spoke with someone who went to the footy on monday night and wore a mask. She said it was a very cold night but the mask seemed to make her hot and uncomfortable. Her son had a mask with a valve that let the hot air/breath out and it was more comfortable. God knows. Also read that the masks with the valves are not ideal as covid can escape thru the valve? Health minister said on radio they were checking the waste treatment works for evidence of covid community transmission. It must be excreted via feaces or urine? Mind boggling how that sort of potential transmission person to person will be managed. Masks will not be the whole story. Gloves. Hand washing. Take extra care using public toilets.
  11. Grim if no cruising for years. Reading about the spanish flu pandemic, it ended after think a couple of years? Unclear how it ended opinions differ. People will still want to travel and cruising, unpack once was attractive. surely something will be resolved? Cannot live without risk. Dreadful reading and hearing daily about the poor souls in so called lockdown in aged care. Still getting infected and dying. Isolated some are not eating and cannot understand and feel abandoned. Do hope we all hear better news soon. The daily lectures from authorities about how to behave are tiresome. Annoying when many of us are doing our best and we read of blunders that should not happen by others. Take care
  12. Sorry to hear about the cancelled cruise. Many are having the same difficulties even with short bus or train trips booked last year. Main issue is the locked borders of states and the possibility of who will be next. Just reading about CMV cruise line in administration, potentially thousands of customers and staff. Will look at the ordering on line masks. Have worn the surgical ones often a poor fit and an odd smell, plus not meant for more than a few hours. Happy mixed cloth ones look ok. we will all have to do what we can. Take care all.
  13. Heard there was a crowd of 18000 at the Adelaide oval tonight, hope no covid transmission. Also there will be a 2 week trial of random people being tested at pharmacy shops, selected by the staff if the customer reports covid symptoms. Not sure what happens if a positive case is found, customers and staff potentially exposed and shop closed for deep cleaning? They are not going to disclose the shops so no one will know if a particular place is one of the testing places. A sampling exercise. Tried to buy some masks wit no luck. May have to use whatever we can find. Strange world we live in at present with constant changes. Take care.
  14. https://www.cruisediary.de/mit-der-a-rosa-alva-auf-dem-douro/ Reading the river cruise forum this was being discussed. Beautiful pictures of the douro area and cruise experience. Think this was the 3rd cruise only 31 people but its a start. Lots of details. Unfortunately we cannot leave to get to the cruise just yet. Thought it might be of interest.
  15. Around March when the Australian govt announced major restrictions, 6 months was the duration given. That time frame now looks unrealistic? No one was permitted to leave the country, with some exemptions. Other countries have not made that decision? Thousands have since flooded back in and more expected, albeit in smaller batches. This state of no travel out of the country looks to be permanent now until a vaccine? This means many are locked in and will never have the opportunity to leave, if the vaccine takes years. Future cruise credits will be useless. People will be compelled to limit their spending in this country. With all the border restrictions and sudden changes, planning holidays is difficult. Trapped in a hot zone would be challenging and no one would want to live with uncertainty forever. Can anyone see any end to this?
  16. Sunny day. pruned the roses and divided iris had too many to replant so gave them to others to plant. Remembering happy times in normandy viewing the lovely thatched cottages with iris on top, apparently they assist with keeping the thatch dry. Pretty place in spring, cooler in autumn. visited a cognac place and ate beautiful apple tart, Thinking about masks. Hard to get early in the pandemic. Looked at making some but not skilled with sewing. probably end up buying some or making do somehow. Reading about a woman fined for feeding her horse in victoria, now rescinded thank goodness.
  17. Agree that would be totally unacceptable. https://www.productreview.com.au/listings/apt Many complaints here. We have travelled with APT and their product is good when its good, a lot depends on the cruise director and other issues. Subpar so called premium trip to NZ. Coach was 3 groups blended so it was crowded. Some hotels did not have aircon in all rooms, it was hot in the north. Competitor coach company often reached the hotel first and got the better rooms. One hotel had dirty cups in the room from previous occupants and room was generally not clean. The scenery was lovely and others on the trip were good company. Apart from a couple of sisters who insisted daily on the front seats, and had loud verbal fights with the driver who ruled everything, including the pretty coach director. We were compensated a bit. Info about new offerings. https://www.travelweekly.com.au/article/wholesaler-wrap-apts-new-way-to-experience-oz-g-adventures-launches-physically-distanced-trips-more/ There are some class actions but they take a long time. ACCC advice? Expert advice? Media? Good luck with it all.
  18. Spoke with a couple we know who have booked a couple of local trips. 1 to kangaroo island taking their car, and a 3 day cruise on Murray Princess. They survived the last cruise on the ruby princess. Got to make the best of life. This latest escalation in covid cases may delay a return to overseas travel in the foreseeable future.
  19. yes we will try and have enough available in case of no notice involuntary detention. strange times.
  20. We cruised on Cunard Queen Victoria recently and there was a large painting of Camilla, very detailed complete with showing veins on her hands, quite well done. When all the salacious details about the affair was published she did maintain a dignified silence. The news about the mandatory lockdown with zero notice in Melbourne was alarming. The CHO referred to the high rise flats as vertical cruise ships. Hope this method of public health control is not going to be the nom. Also hope the infected are isolated from others in those buildings. With cases rising around the world as is reported it is either the beginning of the end or a new wave. Amazing viewing websites that show the amount of flights. Cruising will begin again. Rather take chances cruising than be locked down with no notice like the poor souls in Melbourne at present. Things are occurring that are beyond our imagination.
  21. Interesting. Presume the health checks will be a personal expense? Medical practitioner can only document what they see/find on the date of the consult, 7 days prior to travel. We do not know what the form will require to be answered. Perhaps current meds/allergies/recent ops/illness. Some cruise lines have asked for relevant med history before, to be sealed and only opened in an emergency. Wonder if they test again during the cruise? It is a start to ensure people display minimal risk factors to cruise. Whatever they be deemed to be. Nevertheless nothing is risk free health wise at any age.
  22. Hopefully once there is more clarity around incubation times and whether positive results mean the person is infectious or not, cruising will start again. it seems not many are requiring hospital care even with the positive cases. the thought we have to remain in isolation until a vaccine arrives is grim indeed.
  23. Excellent we no longer have a caravan but have enjoyed travelling to NSW and other places nice to go at your own pace.
  24. Some of the quarantine regimes sound a bit of a farce at present. Plus exceptions can be organised. Testing is not mandatory in all states. It was disturbing to hear some of the reports from people locked in their small rooms with no exercise or fresh air for 14 days. There were also reports of difficulties with prompt medical attention for some. In Perth a man was extremely ill and ambulances were sent away, eventually his wife contacted her children in another state who reported it to police and said if ambulance and transport to hospital was denied again they would attend and it would be done. Understand about infection control measures but it seems ad hoc at present. The reports from Melbourne alleging security were having sex on duty?? Some of the hotels were for people other than travellers, people who needed a place to avoid passing it on to their family or vulnerable people. Hospital staff. Homeless people were also given rooms at some places.
