Sorry if I am missing a post! I have tried to find out as much information as possible but have not found any good posts. My son is 11 and has Celiac disease. We have cruised another cruise line without any issues but will be trying Celebrity in November – anyone have any tips or suggestions?

Have you filled in the 'Special Needs' form?

Celebrity like it 90 days before sailing, just so they can stock the correct ingredients.

You also need to pay a visit to the dining room, the afternoon of embarkation day to talk to the Maitre'D who will advise on that night's menus. After your evening meal, you will pre- order for the next day.

They have menus for dairy free, gluten free, sugar free and vegetarian.

I follow a strict gluten-free diet as well as other restrictions. Celebrity is outstanding at taking care of my needs. When I mentioned it at the buffet on embarkation day, they found the head chef for me, who gave me a personal tour and he pointed out all the foods and dishes that I could have. He said to tell them that I have an allergy and they would even change the serving spoon, so there would be no cross-contamination

 

At the brunches I have attended, again a chef escorted me to all the "safe" foods! Same at all the other breakfast and dinner venues. They really went out of their way, sometimes even with special dishes that were not even on the menu.

 

Each evening as another poster mentioned, I could choose my dinner for the following evening. Nothing was too much trouble. Spoiled me rotten!!

Awesome! Thank you both for your answers! We had to order the night before on another cruise so that will work. We stayed away from the buffet but it is good to hear that we might be able to eat there. (We just did pizza and sandwiches before)

Besides the personal gluten free pizza in the buffet, they also have the gluten free pasta. In the dining room for dinner, I never bothered ordering the night before, since the menu has symbols for gluten free. If I didn't care for what was offered that evening, I would just order a steak dinner from the left side of the menu, but that's just me! My waiter and asst waiter went over and above to take care of my needs.:D

My wife has been diagnost with stage 4 Celiac since 2003. Our cruise on the Reflection in 2013 was the most worry free and enjoyable in 25 years. Last yr on the Equinox everything was equally as good till the server in Tuscan the next to last night gave her the wrong soup. Be dillegent, Celebrity was better at taking care of her than RCCL in 2011, and Princess in 2012.

 

Fax in the Special Needs form so it is noted on your reservation.

 

BTW, the GF pizza in the Oceanview buffet was so good it almost brought tears to her eyes. The staff in the Oceanview were the best on both ships.

Our teen daughter was recently diagnosed as celiac, and our Reflection cruise in February was our first post diagnosis trip.

 

 

We called Celebrity and advised them, and made sure that the matter was noted on the reservation. Once we boarded, we asked for the maître d of the buffet restaurant. He took us around and told her what she could have and what she shouldn't have. He also explained how she could order GF pizza, which she did on several days.

 

We then met with the maître d of the MDR. While we had select dining, we were able to make a standing reservation for the entire week, to be seated in the section served by the same wait staff. They were wonderful. Always had a basket of GF bread for her and a separate butter dish. She preordered her dinner the night before. If she wanted something , the wait staff was able to check with the kitchen to see whether it could be made GF.

 

For desert, if she wanted gelato, the wait staff was able to get it from a freshly open container, so no risk of cross contamination.

 

All in all it was a very positive experience. If the wait staff or even the maitre d was unsure of something, there were people that they called. In one case the reply came back that the product was from a supplier where the full list of ingredients was not listed, so they suggested that she avoid it.

 

I think that the best advice is to make your condition known to the right people, as they do seem to be able to accommodate .

We were on Summit two weeks ago and were in Select dining. We sat and came to know a couple and he had Gluten free diet. Every night after dessert the Maitre'd came over with the next night's menu and they wrote down what he would eat the next night.

Yes they are, but be diligent.

 

Silk Harvest on the Equinox did the best job for us last yr. We went to Murano 2x's with no issues, and Tuscan 2x's. But the second time the server got lax and delivered to my wife the wrong cup of soup. It had pasta in it, mine did not. She only had to bites, but at her stage of the disease, the damage was done. She missed the last day of our cruise sick in the cabin.

 

The yr before the Lawn Club staff on the Reflection was simply wonderful!

They went way above and beyond to make her GF pizza so she would not feel left out. And took extra care not to cross contaminate it.

Love reading the good reviews! It is hard for an 11 year old to have to go through these food issues. I have a TA that will make sure it is in our notes and I will also double check him. :)

 

My son (7) is peanut allergic. He felt like a rockstar on Celebrity. He's so used to other cruiselines telling him what he can't eat (i.e. "better not to take chance". Royal would not let him eat anything chocolate because the chocolate said "may contain". Yes, I understand the risk, but to a 7 year old, peanut allergies are the worst thing ever and you get tired of being told you have to go without "just in case"

 

Celebrity went out of their way to make him special. For one, because of his allergies, he was treated "special" in a good way. Even the "buffet" experience was a delight. The first few days, I reached out to a manager, and by day 3, we were expected at breakfast and they would have a plate of my son's favourite pastries ready and waiting for him. SO IMPRESSED!

 

I hope your son has the same positive experience!

Thanks so much for the information. My niece is the Celiac and has never cruised before and this may be her only one (her parents don't travel much). I would like her to enjoy everything on offer on our cruise so your comments are very welcome.

wallie5446 - I feel for your wife! So sorry that happened to her!

 

She went for years not knowing what was wrong. The Dr finally got it right in 2003 after we were put on the right track by another member here on CC. Who has become a very great friend BTW!

 

We know to stir the soup to double check, but things had been perfect for 10 days and we both got lax, and she paid the price. Double check, always.

 

All this said, Celebrity does take care of their pax better than we had on the RCCL Freedom in 2011, and the Ruby Princess in 2012.
