Vintage Clothing

I just love the idea of having a collection of vintage gowns to take on our TA in July.

Do many people go for the vintage theme?

Anyone able to recommend some good websites, other than the usual Ebay etc

What vintage/era are you thinking about? I don't think I've ever seen anything "vintage" on any of our crossings.

Or maybe 30's would be more appropriate :) If I could get my hands on that emerald dress that Kiara Knightly wore in Atonement, I would be a very happy bunny.

While I've never seen vintage formal wear on a ship (that I could identify as such), I think it would be lovely !!! (I'm not so sure about 70's hair styles, though---I'm picturing Sonny in bangs and Cher with ironed hair--nothing I'd like to see resurrected)… In any event, I love the creativity in your thinking, ClanMcLean!

I think the trick is finding vintage pieces which are timeless. By which I mean they're from the selected era (in my case the 30's) and are classically beautiful but the style and cut may not be obviously 30's to many people, but what they do see is elegance.

Last month on the QV we had a "Roaring 20's" themed evening. Some lovely vintage looking evening attire appeared, and I was very happy to "go" with this.

Theatrical costume hire would be the answer' though not a very cheap one.

Pick your era and there is loads of choice. Every head would would turn as you entered the DR and a buzz of conversation would be all about you.

Your partner would have to cooperate though if you were dressed as Regency and he as regular issue DJ.

Do a search for theatrical costume hire, there is loads out there.

In the UK there are specialist vintage shops. You can sometimes pick up vintage clothes in charity shops located in up market areas. Markets like Portobello Road, Camden Passage and Camden Markets would have them. They also sometimes come up for auction.

However, if the OP isn't UK based, not very helpful information.

As Lady L1 says there were a lot of people joining in for the Roaring 20s but when they asked for people to dress to board the QM2 in Liverpool last year there was only about ten of us. Guess you either love it or you don't but if you do just get dressing!

I totally agree. I watched "Atonement" last night just to see your green dress. You simply can't go wrong with stylish elegance...and yes, you will stand out as stunning. The Cunard dining room can use more stunning and less "I packed for convenience". :)

The trick is to wait until they have a sale which happens quite often in the UK.

I wear a LOT of Phase Eight. Sometimes I'm lucky with a sale - more often not :confused: I am just off to look on-line now as we have a cruise in seven weeks and I need a couple of new evening dresses.

Waiting patiently for late Sept for our next QE I too feel a new gown coming on...:) I do recycle most of my dresses after a couple seasons, but hang on to a few favourites..I love vintage jewellery too....;)

You will, however, have to pay to have the side zip taken out as it's the opposite of "concealed" and, in my opinion, spoils the finish of the dress - the "alteration" cost me £15 at my local dry cleaners. I shall be wearing mine, on a smart casual evening, in July - I always wear long on a formal night. I will admit though that the sequinned dresses are heavy so probably not so good for anyone who has to fly to/from a cruise.

Thank you. Somehow I missed this one, but I have now ordered it in red. Like you, it'll be a smart casual dress.

I have a couple of voyages lined up, one if which is a fly cruise, but we have plenty of allowance so the weight isn't a problem.
