Has smoking policy changed on Carnival since September 2011?

This was the last time we cruised. We had a balcony cabin, which we usually do. This time was a bad mistake. The people right next to us were heavy smokers. Out on the balcony smoking all the time. Choking and lighting up first thing in the morning. Leaving port, coming into port, smoke, smoke, smoke. Totally ruined the usually great balcony cabin experience for most of the cruise. Not booking a balcony again due to this experience. I mean who wants to spend all that money and never use the balcony. Yeesh.

Are folks still allowed to smoke on their balconies or inside their cabins on Carnival? Or are there smoking only areas designated on the ships? Thanks.

The first part went into effort around the time your cruised where some lounges became nonsmoking.

I think it was last nov when they put into effect you could no longer smoke in your cabin.. so now all the smokers need to book balconies and can only smoke out on their balconies, not inside the cabin. So if anything it will be worse chance of having a smoker next door to you since last Nov's changes.

Yeah, that's what I figured. Thanks, Firefly.

Yeah but what about the people in the next cabin who are not smokers. You ruin their cruise. So I say BAN SMOKING IN ALL CABINS AND BALCONIES.

hi John

Stop stressing - no smoking on the balconies on the Carnival Spirit according to a post on the Australian board http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=1690400&page=2- , and it is also on the Carnival Australia website.

Now the bad news - we are not allowed to bring any wine on board. They have changed the rules since we booked our cruise, so I am currently fighting that one with Customer Service .

Cheers

Hilary

Splendor, Dream, Magic and Breeze have Cloud 9 Spa cabins that do not allow smoking on the balconies.

You can still smell smoke on the Cloud 9 balconies from smokers on the balconies below (deck 9?) but mostly only when at port because the smoke doesn't dissipate as quickly. So if your unlucky and have a heavy smoker in a cabin below you, you probably won't enjoy your balcony as much while in port. It's never been overt but still more noticeable than I had hoped.

The balconies are a designated smoking area. Smoking inside the cabin is no longer allowed.

The only exception to balcony smoking are the spa cabins. Choose a ship with this feature, and you can control who smokes around you.

They should allow smoking only on one side of the ship. Or only on the aft balconies.

Being there aren't enough smokers to fill one side of a ship, what do you do with the rest of the non smokers? Not to even imagine the logistical nightmare of jigsawing a ship occupancy to fill their ships moving people around.

And a ship sailing at 18 knots with a tailwind of 22 knots will have smoke traveling forward on a ship, so aft smoking doesn't work.

and by doing that you would ruin someone who smokes cruise...there is no win win. take what you get with the mostly non smoking ship and leave the smokers with what little they have left!

You know the answers to the question. Sneaky way to start a smoking/non smoking thread;)

The easiest way to answer this is to send you to the Carnival FAQ's page.

You should always read through the FAQ's from one cruise to the next as you never know when policies change etc.

The new smoking policy will be rolled out in two stages:

Effective June 15, 2011, cigarette smoking in public venues will only be permitted in Carnival’s dance clubs as well as in designated areas within the casino and casino bar.

Smoking (including cigars) will be permitted in designated exterior open deck areas of all our ships. Additionally, smoking will also be allowed in the jazz clubs of the following ships: Carnival Destiny, Carnival Triumph, Carnival Victory, Carnival Spirit, Carnival Pride, Carnival Legend, Carnival Miracle, Carnival Conquest, Carnival Glory, Carnival Valor, Carnival Liberty, Carnival Freedom, and Carnival Splendor.

Effective December 1, 2011, smoking will be prohibited in all guest staterooms. Guests in balcony staterooms may smoke (including cigars) outside on their balcony. However, Spa suites and staterooms, inclusive of the balconies, will remain an entirely smoke-free environment.

Guests who smoke in their staterooms will be assessed a $250 cleaning and refreshing fee on their Sail & Sign account. Information on this fee is included in Carnival’s ticket contract.

I would pay extra for a nonsmoking cruise. It is so nice to see most restaurants are now smoke free.

Maybe they could tow a small life boat behind the ship for smokers. Smokers could swim to and from the life boat as needed.

They can fill the ships. 10% - 20% of most groups are smokers, and a smoker could not be expected to not smoke between ports.

I'm fine with banning smoking all together. Just tried to offer a solution that everyone could live with.

By making one side of the ship non-smoking allows passengers to book early and get it if that is important to them.
