rear facing balcony

Recommended Posts

Am getting ready to book on Adventurer and have never tried a rear facing balcony. In the drawing online, the end rear facing balconies look larger but when I called, the not knowledgeable RCCL person could not answer any questions about it. Just stated there is a 25% obstructed view. Wondering if anyone has feedback on rear facing balcony rooms and if it is better or worse than a regular balcony room?

The outside balcony portion is much larger on a rear facing balcony stateroom than that of a side facing stateroom of the same category.

On that class ship, while the balconies are much deeper than any on the sides of the ship, you can't stand at the rear rail and look straight down to the water...there is more ship's superstructure beyond your balcony. You can look past it, to the wake. The lower the deck, the more superstructure there is to look past.

Asking the RCI booking reps a question about a specific cabin will do you no good....they do NOT have any information that isn't on the deck plans.

ok, booked a balcony cabin. Trying to decide if it will face the ports as we pull in. Is there one side of the ship that typically faces the land? We are in 9654. Thanks

The side of the ship that faces land is unpredictable.

If you do a search on AFT balcony you will find a ton of information and the pro's and con's of those balconies.

We too are booked in a aft balcony for the first time in April on the Adventure. We are normally hump balcony people, but we figured we would see what all the rage about was with these cabins!

Not only can the ship port on either side, but because of the configuration of the port area, you may find that the non-porting side has the better view. Either side will work out fine!

In many ports of call the ship will dock front (or back) in as the pier is perpendicular to the land which has the view side to side in port. Although not all necessarily on your itinerary, examples include St. Martin, St. Kitts, Falmouth, Antiqua, Old San Juan (when San Juan is a port of call), St. Thomas. And in those ports that are a parallel pier it is not certain that the captain will dock the same side to the pier each time.

We were just on the Adventure for a Mediterranean cruise in rooms 7388 and 7390, which are aft balconies and we LOVED them! Yes, you can't look down directly into the sea, but our views were still amazing. 7388 has the largest balcony on the ship and costs the same as a regular balcony. We're a family of five and we hung out out there all the time. We had lounge chairs, a table etc....we even brought a hammock!

With 7388 you get a view of both the back and the side of the ship....so your range of view is amazing. We loved pulling into ports and being able to see so much.

The only slight downside, for some people, is that the balcony is mostly in the shade. There was sunlight towards the front and at times, almost half the balcony was in the sun....but if you're looking for a full-sun balcony, this won't be it. We loved the shade though, as it kept us cool AND it was great protection when it rained. We still sat out on our balcony and enjoyed the day! :)

I would definitely book those rooms again!

Many have missed the fact that 9654 is not aft facing. Regardless - Southern is a great itinerary and most of your time will be on shore. Enjoy your trip!!

Nice catch! I assumed it was all the way in the back. Your cabin is port side but as other posted, it's unpredictable as to which way the ship will pull into the dock. I swear it seems every time I get port side cabins (on the left facing forward), more than 75% of the time, we aren't pulling in facing the port.

I think most thought you were talking about an AFT cabin facing the rear of the ship, not facing the from the sides. The ones in the very back are the ones that many love to love ;-)

We sailed on the Freedom last month in an aft cabin on Deck 7 and loved it. Yes, you can't look directly down at the water over the stern, but we had a corner cabin, so we could look down somewhat from the side. The balcony was much larger than a standard balcony for that class of cabin. You do feel a little bit of vibration from the engines, compared to being midship, but it wasn't at all irritating or distracting.

As for docking, the Freedom docks on the starboard side at Port Canaveral, but we docked port side at St. Thomas and Sint Maarten. But, having docked stern first at Sint Maarten, we had a great view of the runners making the ship just before departure.

It may not matter, but, 9654 is NOT a true aft cabin with the massive balcony. It is on the aft portion of the ship, but, if you were hoping for the larger balcony you should keep an eye open in case one opens up.

FWIW, we like the aft cabins, and have one booked on Adventure for our upcoming cruise. If you do get the chance to try one I'm sure you'll be happy, and the superstructure is no big deal as far as the view goes. We've seen whales and dolphins off of ours.

Enjoy your cruise.
