Boarding the sun..

Still no pictures or updates on the renovations that I can find. We'll be on the Sun in August and are looking forward to a refurbished ship. We've been on her twice before and always liked her anyway, but she was due for some updating for sure.

Must be only one CC cruiser on the ship! Amazing how many were on the last cruise before drydock.

No news maybe means everyone is happy?

Nothing anywhere on the internet either. NCL website not showing any updated pictures either. Kind of strange that all 1900 plus passengers have posted no pictures or information.

I've been stalking Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter (in addition to here) searching with the hashtags #nclsun and #norwegiansun - there have been a couple shots, mostly from new crew, but they've been of people, not the ship. I know NCL is pushing Bliss really hard (and she's a beauty - now I'm looking at cruises on her, so well done there). But, I'd love to see some pics from the Sun refresh on the NCL site - some of the pictures haven't been updated since before the last big reno in 2011!! Wouldn't some good pics of how pretty she is now counterbalance the negative press from the "drydock" cruise?

Good day!

I am currently on the Sun headed through the Panama Canal.

Day 11, weather has been great, we arrive in Costa Rica tomorrow.

I thought I would drop in and give all you patient folks a brief update on some of the improvements.

My last cruise on the Sun was in a mini suite in June 2017, currently am in a balcony.

I'm not much of a picture taker so here is a brief description of the changes I have noticed on board.

My room has new carpeting and drapes. No other upgrades noticed.

The balcony has new teak decking and the metal railing was replaced with plexi-glass.

Carpeting has been replaced in most public areas and restaurants, some hallways still have the old fish carpeting.

Most public areas appear to have a fresh coat of paint.

New decking was installed in most exterior areas.

Spinnaker Lounge and Bliss – appear to be the same footprint, new furniture.

Casino – new carpeting and table game layouts . . . . haven’t noticed too many changes with the slot machines. They are still taking my money just like on my last cruise. :)

Stardust Theatre - new comfy seating.

LaBistro – Banquet seating replaced with regular tables.

Los Lobos - opened around April 24th, table side guacamole and spicy margarita's are a must have!

Haven’t been to LaCucina I so don’t know if there are any changes.

I haven't been to Teppanyaki but another guest told me that an additional table was added.

All other restaurants and bars appear to be refreshed (I have not noticed any major changes).

Food and service have been pretty good. It appears that there are alot of new staff.

No major issues, just not as attentive as I have experienced in the past.

Bar drinks have been inconsistent from bar to bar. However, if you drink enough you stop noticing. :0)

We all start new jobs and have to be trained somewhere!

I have not seen any maintenance or construction during the day. On a couple of late evenings some work was being done on deck. Nothing noisy or disruptive.

There are around 1850 of us on this cruise (4 children).

Internet signal is pretty good.

Unfortunately most areas of the ship are pretty quiet after 11:00 pm. Everybody is tucked in for the night.

Overall having a great time!

Ask away if you have any questions and I’ll do my best to answer. (Please don't ask me to run around and take pictures).

K

Thanks so much for your report! I had hoped that there would be an upgrade to add USB ports to the bedside lighting as they did on the Pearl. Los Lobos is a real bonus for the Sun ...my favorite ship sailing to Cuba in May! Enjoy your cruise!

kaybee 16, thank you so much for taking the time to write and let us know the updates! I will be a first timer on the Sun in June - have a bid in place for a mini suite. Thanks also for the tips!! I plan to not notice the bar service after awhile as well :) (hoping they replaced bedding too :) :)

Nothing major though, which was my point.

Uh, no... there was major changes. Unless you consider a major change cutting the ship in half and adding more "ship" a major change.

For most of us this is a major change, I do agree that some were "rude" to you but the changes were "major...

What do you think were the major changes? New carpet, flooring, paint and USB ports are not major. Adding new restaurants, activities or water slides are major. Cutting the ship in half would be also, lol.

Isn't that what they did, new restaurants e.g. wasn't Tapas replaced? What did they do to Moderno, if anything.

What about the buffet? That one had talk about making it more like the other ships which I said earlier I would find hard to do since the area is so small so very curious about that.

We travel with the Sun to South America. We would also like to know what the ship looks like now. Are there really no pictures after the time in dry dock?
