To hold my key card, some gambling cash and, when I leave the ship, a credit card as well. It tucks discretely under my shirt and is very convenient...also watertight when I snorkel.

I carry my card on a lanyard and if I don't have pockets, then I carry a small wristlet bag that holds my medications and my phone/camera.

 

I do think this is to each their own.

 

 

I have a very good compromise. I put the card on a lanyard, loop the lanyard to my belt, and put the card and most of the lanyard in my pocket. Just like the old fashioned key chain or pocket watch chain. Out of the way and out of sight.

 

Our forefathers were smarter then we give them credit for. I use the lanyard all year round as I am constantly opening locked doors throughout the day on my job.

 

This way the card never gets lost and is convenient to put in the door. If I have to give it to someone there is an easy clip to get it off.

This is exactly what I do. Except I use a lanyard from a USB flash drive. The little string loop ties to the card, and the lanyard ties to the belt loop of my shorts, similar to wallet chains from the 90's. The lanyard has a clip to detach the card if need be (that's normally used to detach the flash drive).

 

This improvised lanyard ended up being a great conversation opener. I had people randomly approach me and ask where I got it. When I'd tell them that I took the lanyard from a flash drive, they seemed to really like the idea.

We use lanyards and our upcoming cruise will be our 15th cruise on RCCL. We use it for convenience and I don't really care if I'm mistaken for a newbie. Since I started using the lanyard I haven't lost my card, or spilled a drink trying to find it or open my cabin door. I also have a grin on my face during the entire cruise. When I cease to have a good time and smile constantly, I'll try another type of vacation. We still take lots of photos because we no longer spend a fortune on the ship's photos. We can be seen dropping into the Promenade cafe for a snack during the day and at night and we've yet to miss a meal. We always have a balcony cabin, but we love being on the deck during sail-away. By day 3, I can usually find my cabin without having to think or take a different route. I'm not impressed with our status any time other than when I ask for the balcony discount or when I send the bag of wash and fold. I go on a cruise to enjoy myself and love seeing everyone else enjoying themselves too. I try to treat everyone from the staff and crew to the other passengers respectfully.

Can't wait to be a newbie for cruise number eight in January on the wholly heck this boat is huge Oasis so the Seas lol! I get emotional when going up the gangway and have to choke back my tears of joy. I have not yet worn a lanyard but who cares how you carry your card as long as you don't lose it! You might wake up by the pool with a rectangular shaped sunburned spot on you but...who cares? Don't forget your aloe gel to soothe the burn. Better yet, don't fall asleep in the sun! I always ooh and ahhh when I get on the ship and I also wear my life jacket to the "mustard" drill. It saves me from having to carry it. Isn't that why we use lanyards? The first question everyone asks me about cruising is "do you have to pay for drinks". Never expect that anything is free and we'll all just have a great time. 10 bucks won't break the bank will it? This is a great post by the way. It may save the newbies the embarrassment of being judged by some. Happy cruising :)

Everybody has to lose their cruise virginity sometime.......lol. I do always laugh a little when the drill is referred to as a "Mustard Drill".

 

We are on the same Oasis sailing in January. I can't wait. Just booked a D3 balcony last week. I'm a solo cruiser and was hoping for some kind of solo discount, but no luck.

(As far as what to do with your card...hubby keeps his in the pocket of his swim trunks...I usually get his to get drinks;) )

 

Not for years, on any ship I've been on.

 

Yes, up until just a few years ago, you had to still put them on on the ships that we have vacationed with. Probably varies slightly. Also, those of you that try to 'hide' from the muster drills make it completely frustrating for those of us stuck together, pressed in our rows, waiting so the crew can account for EVERYONE. Don't be a jerk to the rest of us; these drills are for safety and accountability. It will be important for a real emergency. Don't think you are the only one that wants to be off doing other things. Get where you are supposed to be quickly and safely so we can all go back to our vacation!

Actually experience cruisers do this too. I'm contemplating it for my next cruise and I'm not a virgin in either sense LOL

 

My wife 'won' a lanyard, and got her card punched, so as she could wear it. She took one look in the mirror, and said, 'I look stupid wearing this!!!'

'Nough said.

We all wear our cards in lanyard type pouches and we are experienced cruisers! But... Ours have pockets to carry our cell phones which we use as cameras. I don't carry a purse on the ship. Only my pouch with my card and cell phone. I squeeze the daily schedule in there too.:)

 

I think the newbies can be seen wearing the free casino lanyards or the lanyards sold in the on board gift shop.

Here's a few newbie goodies.....

 

** You ask the piano bar player to play "piano man!"

 

** Definitely the ones who are wandering in the halls looking for their cabin. (Royal Caribbean hint!! The carpet is different colors on different parts of the ship!) ask & I'll tell you the secret!

 

** You pile your buffet plate volcano high. You CAN go back for more ya know!

 

** You look like a lobster 3 hours into your cruise.

 

** You get busted in your stateroom trying to dodge the muster drill.

 

** At dinner you wave that napkin around like a propeller & record all wait staff singing performances!

 

** You stop at every life preserver, pirate, dolphin & cruise photo opportunity. THEN you spend a fortune in the photo studio. (But truly, those plain portraits & B&Ws are really nice {minus the sunburn tan lines})

 

** You wait till the LAST day to go to the guest svc desk to discuss your bill instead of checking it periodically on your TV.

 

** You eat only 1 appetizer & 1 entree in the MDR.

 

** You have different shoes for every single day. (This one is a biggie. Experienced cruisers will bring a pair of evening or formal shoes that match all their outfits.)

 

** Lanyards aren't a newbie thing. It's a matter of hands free convenience.

 

** You have a phone, Ok... but leave the laptop home. Unless you're a business owner, remember how healthy is to unplug. Its vacation!

 

** You allow your kids to text friends back home from on board not realizing all those intl roam charges!

 

** They are a top qualifier in almost all the cruise competition activities... BONUS and their face is plastered all over the "Cruise memory in review" Souvenir DVD! Especially the sexy legs or belly flop contest!

 

** They try to save pool lounger seats by putting towels on at 7am & think they will still be saved at 9:30 after bkfst.

 

** You wonder why the piano player doesn't take your requests. (Put $$ in his jar!)

 

** CORNROWS & beads in your hair!

 

** They witness Señor Frogs or Carlos & Charlie's for the first time & are Running (stumbling) to catch the ship OR you hear their name over the PA system when it's time to leave port!

 

** They buy the Cozumel tee shirt that says "1 tequila, 2 tequila, 3 tequila, floor.

 

** They buy liquor in port & are surprised when its taken away when getting back on board.

 

** They have look of terror when they see a Toyota minivan that has seats for 28 people!!

 

** They look for the iron & ironing board in their stateroom.

 

** they are wearing wrinkled linen outfits.

 

** They attend the animal towel folding seminar.

 

** They ask if they can sit at the Captains table!

 

** They make it to the bow & do the "I'm the king if the world" pose for a photograph.

 

** And lastly, because I REALLY need to get back to sleep... The newbie couple that willingly VOLUNTEERS for the live & marriage game show!! LOL!

 

And so many more!!!

 

I LOVE to watch the enthusiasm & amazement of newbies when I cruise. Each ship I go on, I too explore every nook & crannie, and say wowwwww! Just love every minute of it! And if you're lost I'll help point you in the right direction.

Ps... Purses NO. But at dinner I bring a wristlet to carry my sea pass, my camera, a mint, Chapstick & casino$$!)

This, like the purse/lanyard issue and several others mentioned in this thread, is not a newbie vs. experienced cruiser thing - it's just a matter of personal choice.

 

I am an experienced cruiser and I will not cruise with less than 5 pairs of shoes. I usually take about a dozen pairs. That's what I choose to do. I like shoes:D and I like having choices.:) Also, I usually cruise out of drive-to ports so extra luggage is not a big deal. "Overpacking" in the shoe (or any other) department does not make one a cruise newbie. It just makes one an "overpacker". And some overpackers are perfectly happy being so.;) To each her own.
