How do you skip the dreaded emergency drill?

I'm sick of going to those life boat drills every time I cruise. Has anyone here ever skip it? How did you do it? (I get claustrophobic with so many people in such a small area).

Why would you want to skip it? What if there was an emergency? What if you did have to evacuate?

Although I do not like it, I would never skip the drill. It makes me nuts when we are outside/inside with our vests on waiting for others to show up!!! I mean really, have some consideration for others. There is no way to avoid this procedure so just get it over with so all of us can get on with our vacation!!

I HATE it too..but the look ( and I always snap a photo) on my Boyfriends is priceless in his life vest. Oh well has to be done, Suck it up, get it over with and enjoy your cruise. :)

You will spend more time trying to get out of it than it will take just to do it and get on with the cruise.

WOW! APOST EVERYONE SEEMS TO AGREE ON....so far that is.

This is the most important 15 mins of your trip. Just get a DOD on your way and then you can have fun while doing it.

Just don't take the DOD with you - they will take it away from you for the drill. Had some really PO'D guys next to us on one cruise because the crew took their drinks away until the drill was over.

:cool:H'mmm?? This is a good question on the 98th anniversary of the Titanic sinking!!!

Just what I was thinking. It is an emotional experience looking at around 180 headstones at Fairview Lawn Cemetery (Halifax,NS) all dated April 15,1912.I bet those folks would have loved to have the opportunity to attend a lifeboat drill!!!!!

Any IDIOT who puts his fellow passengers and the crew at risk by purposely missing the safety briefing should be escorted off the ship before sailing.

So when there is a real evacuation you must stay behind to avoid the "so many people in a small area" that small area being the lifeboat.

Thanks for the extras legroom!

I was just on the Inspiration from 4/10 to 4/15. You can bring a drink, they don't take attendance & you also do not need your life vest. It was time consuming (approx 25 min - our ship was full with 2600 passengers)... we met in the lounge & then moved out to where the lifeboats are & stood there until the all clear signal.

There's really no way around it as the rest of the staff is running around making sure no one is in their rooms & there isn't much else to do. It's an important drill. Don't skip it. Just bring a drink with you. :)

...and next time you fly, please pay attention to your flight attendants during the safety demo.

Although most people know how to use a seat belt, emergency exit locations vary considerably from one airplane model to another.

Just FYI, since we're in the topic of skipping or not paying attention to information that could save your life... :)

I've cruised over 120 times, and would NEVER miss the lifeboat drill. I just take it as the start of a great vacation.

On our last cruise, there was a guy who was so hammered that his wife had to hold him vertical for the entire drill. EVERYONE was just waiting for him to fall over, but he actually made it. If HE can do it, I think everyone can. ;)

That reminds me of a lifeboat drill on Royal Caribbean a few years back. We had been drinking quite a bit, and nobody made a "pit stop" before the drill. For some reason, they would not let us go. We were standing out there for what seemed like an hour (I'm sure it was less than that, but when you've been drinking heavily and need to "go", time spans feel different).

So my word of advice: Make a pit stop before going to the drill, in case it takes longer than expected! :D

I have never skipped the drill but I do think that they go on way too long. It only takes a minute to demonstrate how to put the life vest on and once I have observed where my muster station is located I am ready to go. On my last cruise I just took an Ipod with me and tuned out. One of the Carnival employees told me to disconnect which I did for about a minute and then I just plugged myself back in. :D

I have never attended a muster drill in a Carnival lounge and the quality of the PA system at the muster locations is so poor that you can't hardly hear what they are saying.

My goal on my next cruise is to wait as long as possible so that I can be as close to the door as possible in order to speed up my exit once the muster if over. :p

It is not rocket scientist stuff. ;)

Just take a nap. They won't do anything except leave you a letter under your door saying they know you did not go. I don't condone not going but that is your call.

I can't be closed in and I dreaded the muster drill until I actually experienced my first one on the Triumph. The fear of that drill had me worried for many days before we even got on the ship. I was determined to cruise and wouldn't let it stop me. I had read on these boards that people were saying to get there at the last possible moment so you wouldn't be squished against the wall 3 people deep. When we boarded the ship one of the things we did after getting a bite to eat was to loacte our muster station. When they made the announcement I knew exactly where we needed to go. I went down just as they called everyone down and talked to the person running the area we had to stand in. I explained my problem and they were great about putting me next to a door so I could get air and not be crowded in. They told me if I felt like I was being crowded to go inside the door and wait for the drill to end there.

I leave for our 7th cruise on the 24th and I have had sympathetic staff at every muster drill station so far. They do not want people passing out or having anxiety attacks during the drill and will try to accomodate you if you explain it to them :) I no longer dread the drill and get there as soon as they ask people to report to their muster stations so I have a minute to talk to the staff before it gets crowded.

It's the people who wait as long as possible and then show up late and everyone else has to wait for them before the drill can start that is a big part of the problem. Just be there on time, and it will be over with much more quickly.

And the new procedure is a piece of cake compared to the old one.

It's more stress and trouble than it's worth to try to break the rules and skip it. I've been on both sides of the issue. :D

When I was younger I remember having to wear the life jacket for a long time and they took role call. It was a VERY awful process.

Now it is a piece of cake, we were allowed to sit in one of the lounges and then we just had to walk to a life boat. No life vest, piece of cake!
