Lack of self-serve laundry facilities...

This was years ago on a Princess cruise when I was young and foolish.;) I thought I would go to touch up a shirt for my husband and there was a real fight going on because someone had apparently taken the other person's stuff out of the drier. It was the first and last time I went to a self serve laundry room on a ship.

Seen a lot of fights in bars.

Get rid of them? If you're worried don't go to them.... choice right?

Frankly, I have never seen anything more than a discussion over laundry.... and coming from humble beginnings, yup, L-Matt beginnings ;) DW and I have spent a bit of a spell in L-Matts.

on shore and the few times onboard NEVER seen anything nasty....

Seen ugly stuff in bars though.

It had nothing to do with the fight. After raising four children when people used to actually iron their clothes, I decided that when I went on vacation I'd skip the washing and ironing.

Strange that I can always get what I need in my suitcases wthout having to do laundry.

  • 2 weeks later...
...

I still think the lack of self-serve laundry is a Celebrity negative.

Happy cruising to all!

Bob

I'm with you there, Bob! I CAN live without laundry facilities, but would like them available because I like to do some things myself.

We're all different people. I, for one, like to tidy the cabin BEFORE the steward comes to clean. It's just my personal OCDness. My vacation, my choice! Right?

As for laundry...it's just that $20 for a bag of laundry that I could do for $5 seems a bit steep. I could have two martinis for that $20! :D

But, yes, in the overall cost scheme, it's a great service.

Now....just how much can one stuff into those bags?????? Contest anyone? :)

Does Celebrity offer laundry with unscented detergent? I have very sensitive skin, and if my clothes are washed in scented or harsh detergent I get an itchy rash. I'd much rather wash a load or two on vacation that walk around itching. I appreciate self serve laundry facilities.

Fritz, this is also a concern of mine. I am allergic to TIDE detergent. Most hotels use this brand. I too would LOVE to know WHAT they use on Celebrity. Unscented is best also!

I love having the option of laundry on vacation. We pack light (one carry on each for a 2 week trip) and getting everything in plus dress clothes for cruising is tricky sometimes. When I travel overseas I am more than happy to spend 2 hours to do laundry to take literally half the luggage. On our last celebrity cruise we did not get the stuff the bag offer until 2 days before the trip was over. I dont want to take clean clothes home, I want to get my clothes done half way. We had already sent our clothes out and ended up spending $40 instead of $20. I called earlier in the week and they wouldnt say if they were doing the special or not. We probably wouldnt have waited anyways but it kinda felt like a scam. If they are going to offer the special why cant they just tell you.

So to the OP, I cant really stress enough that I love onboard laundry and I miss it dearly on celebrity. We are doing 14 day in 2011 plus a few days before and after. Going to be tough to pack light enough to get into carry-ons!

Thank you for your support Tennant! :D

Yep TOTALLY agree!! I LOVE having the option to "press off a dress shirt" on formal night or wash a quick load of tees/gym clothes/undies/etc. Wine glass in hand and it's never dull 'cuz there's usually fun people doing the same. :)

Right on Julia! Let's do laundry together. But, alas, not on Celebity.

The laundry you have done by Celebrity will be washed using the same detergent as used for the sheets and towels. If you have need for special detergent, suggest you bring it and do your own "in the sink" laundry in your room If the sheets and towels don't bother you, send your clothes out to be washed and dried. Another option is to wash your own clothes and only send them out to be pressed -- the "press only" option is available on board.

OK, I'll ask. Why not pack enough undergarments, which take up no room, for 2 weeks?

As someone who is NOT A SIZE 2 (but not supersized by any means), it is difficult to pack enough undies for 3 weeks without washing sometime inbetween. That's at least 21 pairs!!! Also, as a woman, you KNOW I'm gonna need different cuts for different clothes, so that means even MORE undergarments!

It sure is a pain in the behind being a stylish woman these days!!! :)

I know. TMI. :D

I'd be annoyed if there were laundromats.

Who wants to see passengers lugging dirty clothes back and forth all day?

Either you have never been in a cruise ship that had self service laundry or you were just making a funny. If you were doing the latter, then I get it. But if you were serious, I can ASSURE you that the picture you painted is just not reality.

We've been a multiple 14-17 day cruises and I have to tell you....other than sometimes (albeit barely) running into someone else INSIDE the area, you just don't see people lugging laundry back and forth like you stated. It just doesn't happen...and if it does, I've never seen it.

Perhaps on the longer cruises, it's spaced out a bit more and there are plenty and on many floors.

You know what I get overall after reading the entire thread? Just an overall lack of intolerance. It just makes me think about how intolerant we are of others that do not think like we do. I've said it before, it's the "World According to Garp Syndrome." Also, funny man George Carlin--"did you ever notice if someone passes you along the freeway they are maniacs and if they are going slower than you they are idiots."

What I find most amusing are the posts that state, "Why waste your precious time doing laundry on vacation?" Some of the same people that feel this way sit in front of slot machines for H-O-U-R-S! Now, personally, I would think that was a huge and expensive waste of time (especially when I could be doing my laundry--ha!)....but ha....to each his own. Some of these same folks spend H-O-U-R-S on a bar stool....or sitting through lecture after lecture about port shopping (oh my goodness...just the mention of that made me yawn). Some people spend countless H-O-U-R-S blogging or emailing or playing games on their laptops.

I guarantee you this--no matter what side of the fence you're on, you will do something during the course of your cruise that others will consider a big phat waste of time.

As for me? I'm with the OP. I really like having the facilities. We normally take a minimum of 2 week cruises/vacations and I run nearly every day and that is a lot of sweaty clothes. I don't care how much it cost (let's face it...people spend $3k-$15+k on a cruise...what's another couple hundred bucks)....I really prefer to do it myself. My DH does too. Neither one of us feels like it is taking anything away from our trip. What are you doing 24 hours a day, 14 days straight, that it is such an immense imposition to toss a load of clothes into the washer/dryer? Heck, I do it between cold brews on the balcony!

I've never considered it "work." My DH does most the laundry (he is retired now...but even before he retired, he did most of it--apparently, he never minded doing it either). I have a friend that LOVES to iron...it has nothing to do with $$...she finds it relaxing.

So....."can't we all just get along"?

I am allergic to TIDE detergent. Most hotels use this brand.

Where in the world did you get this information? I run a large resort and have run several small and medium size hotels....TIDE is NOT a hotel laundry detergent. Hotels have huge laundries and use detergents that come in AT LEAST 5 gallon pails, it is commercial grade detergent, not any commonly known National brand that you can buy in your local store. Now they may have a coin vending machine in their guest laundry that sells Tide but it's not a detergent of choice in ANY hotel I've ever seen...

Personally I don't want to do laundry while on vacation but don't care what someone else does....

...there are plenty of people on this board who tip as though dollars were pennies, spend enough on booze to finance the debt of some third-world countries, and think nothing of dropping thousands in the tightest casinos in the world, and all of it because, afterall, "I'm on vacation!"...

You don't really believe everything you read on these boards, do you? Of course there are those who spend more and those who spend less, but I suspect the anonymity of the internet allows some folks to way over-inflate their tipping, drinking and gambling dollars just to stroke their own egos. Otherwise, there's really no need to share that particular information with others, is there?

The OP asked people to chime in... and they did.

  • Most people posting on the Celebrity board have cruised on all Celebrity ships that have never had or advertised that they offered self service laundry facilities.

  • If one were to get sufficiently annoyed by something don't go where you are going to get annoyed.

  • If you want to praise another cruise line you will upset the fans who are here because we all know that Celebrity is better at everything as opposed to all the other cruise lines ;)

  • If the OP had asked if anyone else would like to have the convenience of self service laundry facilities as opposed to expressing annoyance with our beloved X, the response might have been different.

  • When this topic came up several years ago I posted the following solution. Wear your underwear into the shower, lather the shower enclosure (or have your partner do it) and spin yourself quickly, sit on your balcony till bleached and dried... :p

  • As others have also mentioned, become a fan of Celebrity, cruise more often, become elite, and have Celebrity do it for you free while you enjoy yourself...

Sorry about the lengthy response, but a little boredom and annoyance at annoyance over the absence of something never promised, made me do it:cool:

Thank you Xellent, these are all good points. The one that shines, however, is your 2nd one: "don't go where you are going to get annoyed". It reminds me of the old joke about the patient who goes to the doctor to complain that "It hurts when I press here". "Then don't press there" was the sage advice.
