bobbyleduck Posted July 13, 2010 #26 Share Posted July 13, 2010 WOW.....that is kind of harsh:eek::confused: don't care how much anythingcosts?? I totally disagree with that statement....WOW WOW..... The cost of the cabin is a MAJOR factor in my sailing budget. But no, sending out laundry is not. So to say most people don't care about how much anything costs? I enjoy many of your postings but in this case, I think you are totally wrong:eek: Dear Lois: We're going to just have to agree to disagree on this one. Unfortunately, my experience on this board is that too many (maybe not most) people think frugal is a four-letter-word. They'd just as soon leave out the vowels. That very well may not apply to you, and I don't mean to suggest that it applies to everyone, but there are plenty of people on this board who tip as though dollars were pennies, spend enough on booze to finance the debt of some third-world countries, and think nothing of dropping thousands in the tightest casinos in the world, and all of it because, afterall, "I'm on vacation!" I agree with the OP, and wish there were self-serve laundries on Celebrity ships, and I certainly don't understand those who "don't want to see people hauling their dirty laundry to be cleaned." When I do laundry aboard ship, I haul it in a suitcase (both directions), so, what's to see? Happy cruising to all! Bob P.S. I do, however, value much of the sage advice you have offered during my many visits to your posts.
bobbyleduck Posted July 13, 2010 #27 Share Posted July 13, 2010 Wow, your antagonistic, anti-Celebrity bias is really showing today, isn't it. It's a shame that you have developed this unfounded prejudice against those that sail Celebrity and post so helpfully to this board. Hmm! I guess you missed the part where I said, "There are plenty of great things about Celebrity, but self-serve laundry isn't one of them." Happy cruising to all! CathyCruises Posted July 13, 2010 #28 Share Posted July 13, 2010 Well, Bobby, Lois et al: I am very frugal in everyday life; turn out the lights when I leave a room, wash in cold water, only run the dishwasher when it's full, etc. But if I have paid $1000+/pp for a cruise, I really can't complain about $20 to do a bag of laundry half way through. There was a post recently from a lady in a Royal or PH suite who was complaining about no laundry facilities. I am sorry, but if you can afford to book a suite, you CAN afford $20-$30 for laundry when on board!!!! I use the laundry facilities if they're on board, and use the service if they're not. Such a tiny amount of money compared to the big picture, it's amazing we have so many threads about it!! Cathy, aka Cheapskate!
boogs Posted July 13, 2010 #29 Share Posted July 13, 2010 Hum, another discussion about laundry rooms. While we're at it, it would also be nice to be able to cook my own meals in self service kitchens, to make my own bed and clean my own room, to carry my own luggage to and from the parking lot and my stateroom, and to bring my own lounger for the pool area. These cruises have become much too pampering, IMHO. We need to tough it out - enough of this coddeling! Rough it or be a wimp - your choice!!! :D OK, I'm kidding! I'm of the "I'm on vacation and I want to be taken care of" philosphy. Why pay hundreds, if not thousands, of $$$$ for a vacation only to waste precious hours of it doing laundry? Consider this - if you spend $1,500 per person for a 7 day cruise, including transportation (air, bus, taxi, etc.), excursions, drinks, tips, gifts to take home, etc, every hour of your vacation costs you approximately $9.00. Spend two hours of your cruise doing laundry, and you've used up $18. Almost the same cost as sending your laundry out. What do you value more? Happy cruising to all! Bob No, I didn't miss anything. You clearly attacked and stereotyped the people that sail on Celebrity and post on this board. You didn't say "there are plenty of great things about the people that sail Celebrity". I have sailed on Celebrity with many of the fine people that post to this board. None of them fit your vicious sterotype.

It is possible that she's able to afford the suite, because she treats every other aspect of her financial life as if it were doing self-serve laundry. On the other hand, I try to get the best deal I possible can, in all circumstances, including booking inexpensive inside cabins, eating in the MDR, handling almost all of my own shore excursions, and doing self-serve laundry when I can. Remember: The BIG picture is made up of hundreds of thousands of tiny-little pixels.;) Happy cruising to all! Bob

My last cruise, aboard Millennium, was purely to cruise with four other couples I met on our Infinity cruise through the Panama Canal. More than three years later, we're still friends, and I hope to cruise with them again, someday. They were wonderful, cruise critic people, and I met more than 100 additional wonderful cruise critic people aboard our Millennium cruise. I still think the lack of self-serve laundry is a Celebrity negative. Happy cruising to all! Bob
Rare hcat Posted July 13, 2010 #33 Share Posted July 13, 2010 No need for a self serve-- bag of laundry coupon is fine & can always wash out undies in the sink I do miss the drying line on S class~!
DSJ28 Posted July 13, 2010 #34 Share Posted July 13, 2010 Is anyone else annoyed that there are no self-serve facilities on the Equinox? What with the smaller amounts allowed on flights AND the extra charges for luggage, I wonder why Celebrity has little or no laundramats on board? Princess had laundry on every deck! Really, who wants to send their underwear out for cleaning? I know "I'm on vacation", but I would really rather just do it myself. Anyone else want to chime in? I wouldn't say it annoys me, but I'd prefer to have the option of doing laundry myself. So - I'm happy to count myself in the minority with you :). Gracie115 Posted July 13, 2010 #35 Share Posted July 13, 2010 Newbie question - is laundry priced by the bag or by the piece? Thanks. Actually both...you can get a piece dry cleaned or laundered but on our last cruise on the Solstice they gave us a bag to fill as much as we could init and since we are Elite CC we got it for free but I understand it's normally $20, which we've paid on other Royal cruises and I think is VERY reasonable for the amount of stuff you can get into it..:)
nobog Posted July 13, 2010 #36 Share Posted July 13, 2010 Not a deal breaker for a cruise but the option is nice if you are so inclined. Princess was $2 a load (including dryer). Seems like another way to get a few $ on your tab. JK
Rare cruisestitch Posted July 13, 2010 #37 Share Posted July 13, 2010 there are many problems with self-service laundry. I have been on lines that had those machines, and seen the improper loading causing water to run down the halls, witnessed one person trying to dye clothes in the washer, which made the next person's laundry a weird purple color, heard the alarms when dryers started smoking. I applaud X's decision.

DanManBob Posted July 13, 2010 #39 Share Posted July 13, 2010 Newbie question - is laundry priced by the bag or by the piece? Thanks. I am also interested in the answer to this question. I thought I read that it is priced by piece, but some earlier posts seem to imply otherwise. Just call our group tight....lol...but although we will spend 5 figures per couple on our upcoming 19 day trip, even with free airfare (13 day Holy Land cruise, pre/post cruise activities/hotels/food/transport and many guided excursions), it bothers us a little bit that we cannot do laundry.....lol. It is not that we cannot "afford" it, but all four of us were brought up to value hard-earned money and use it relatively wisely. For us, that would mean doing a load of laundry ourselves if we had the opportunity. We are NOT "upset" about it, but would prefer to have a self-service laundry OPTION available. That said, the lack of that option is NOT an issue and will NOT take away from our enjoyment.

Rare cruisestitch Posted July 13, 2010 #41 Share Posted July 13, 2010 As opposed to the poster who wrote: "Most of the people on this board don't care how much anything costs. They are the type of people who will bring as much luggage as they want, and don't care if the airlines charge for it. $20 to have a bag of laundry done is no problem for people who have more money than..." My observation is a bit different. I see person after person asking how to smuggle liquor aboard, how to bring on cases of water or soft drinks, how to find the lowest prices via Tuesday specials and any other offer, how to maximize their OBC, etc. etc. etc. which are all pretty frugal behaviours in my book. JanineM Posted July 13, 2010 #43 Share Posted July 13, 2010 There are plenty of choices in cruiselines if you choose to do laundry on your vacation. I personally would rather cram in a few extra pairs of undies and not be bothered with it. I will however save and budget for laundering a few items so I don't have to spend time with the washer and dryer while on holiday. My DH and I are the cheapest people you'll ever meet and we love to cruise. We save our money, don't buy new cars, don't eat out in restaurants and are careful in our everyday life. To say all those who sail X are spendthrifts is just plain ignorant. It says you haven't read many posts on this very subject. And to those who asked about the pricing ... it's by the piece for laundered (or dry cleaned) and pressed. There are some wash and fold specials where the price is by the bag. And by the way, you'll pay less for those services onboard the ship than you will at home.

cruise kitty Posted July 13, 2010 #48 Share Posted July 13, 2010 someone else mentioned having an obsession with clean clothes, I have to confess, that's me too. :( I would love a self laundry service on board, but make do with sending our stuff to get done by X. Last trip the laundry bill was a bit high, but it was an almost 3 week trip, & we traveled with one suitcase each. No, we're not spendthrifts, you'll never see us in a suite, but we will get a balcony, in everyday life, we are very careful with money, but I can't stand the thought of traveling with dirty clothes in a suitcase. Now you're just messing with me, because if this is the most offensive thing you've seen in the past 10 minutes, then you lead a very sheltered life. My point was, and I'm sure, contrary to your feigned lack of understanding, you caught it, that many people on this board spend as if there is no tomorrow. Not everyone, and considering I don't remember ever seeing a post by you until today, certainly not you, but many people. Me thinks thou protest (WAY) too much. Happy cruising to all! Can't see where this is a subject that would bring such remarks that I have read here. When it comes to doing laundry on a ship, I say "to each his own". Some want to, some don't. If it's so important to some, I suggest they only cruise on lines that offer it. And, if you decide to sail on the cruiseline that does not offer it, don't complain - since you knew up-front what you were getting.
