So this Is Royal Caribbean

Recommended Posts

Hmmm...wondering how this compares to Celebrity? My DW and I will be taking our two sons (22 & 19) on their first cruise. We thought Celebrity might be a little to "Mature" and sedate icon_wink.gif for their enjoyment. Any comments?

There have been several threads on this topic--if you wish to scan a few pages of the threads. We took one cruise on Celebrity and couldn't wait to get back to Royal Caribbean. We could not find anything that we liked better on Celebrity (and I was horrified to see plastic plants!).

HockeyDad...

We have sailed on Celebrity in the summer...and are now booked on a RCCL Voyager Class ship(Explorer)for our next cruise in July. We are also treating our sons to their first cruise..ages 19 & 23. Although we loved Celebrity for the excellent service and food, we chose RCCL for the numerous activites available on-board (rock-climbing, skating, miniature golf) that would interest our guys. They are not sun-lovers who would be happy by the pool all day like my husband and I. We are anticipating that RCCL will be very family-friendly and have something for everyone....plus the bigger ships are exciting...lots to explore. Celebrity had plenty of younger children(a surprise!), lots of middle-agers and Seniors....and some young people....not too many families with older children.

A nice feature of the Explorer is the University of Miami Oceanography Lab is on-board..and we understand the students give lab tours and lectures our boys can attend if they wish. Nothing better than an educational vacation! icon_smile.gif

Have fun planning your cruise!

I have done both lines and have to say that you need to go with RCI. We had a great time on Celebrity but found it a little too stuffy for our tastes. You cannot (as far as the people we came in contact with) joke or have fun with Celebrity staff. Carnival ....well we have outgrown them. Found RCI or Princess right on the mark. Because of this we are taking 5 year old grandson of first cruise and picked RCI for introduction. As far as I am concerned you cannot go wrong with RCI.

W have sailed Celebrity and RCCL (6 times ear) and love both for different experiences. The food and service are far superior (IMHO) on Celebrity, food on RCCL is okay nothing to write home about. Celebrity has a more refined atomsphere, RCCL a little more party. Also the entertainment and onboard activities are superior on RCCL. For someone traveling with teenagers I would choose RCCL because as a previous poster said rock climbing walls, ice

skating, roller skating, etc. Whatever you decide have a good time

I have not sailed on Celebrity but when I saw this post it reminded me of a gentleman I spoke with while in port at St. Thomas last Sept. I was sitting down waiting for some friends who were poking around the shops at the pier when this guy (maybe 60ish)sat down next to me . He asked me if I was on the Princess ship or the Celebrity ship. I told him the Princess ship and he remarked how fortunate I was to be on the Grand and not on the Celebrity ship as he was. He said it was his first time with that cruise line. He got a great price so he booked it. "Never Again" he told me, the people onboard were just not his type of crowd. He wanted to jump ship and join the Princess cruise for some lively activity and conversation. (I am putting it nicely and not trying to be offensive, however this man used quite descriptive language and he was very funny when sharing his experience.) I have never cruised Celebrity so I cannot judge and I do know that each and every cruise is different being somewhat influenced by the crowd onboard at that time. Having said that, the vision of this man as he walked back to the ship with his bag of booze vowing he was going to try and have a good time come hell or highwater was just priceless!

Having said that, choose the cruiseline that best reflects the environment you are more comfortable in and by all means take some time to research both lines on these message boards. They are very informative.

Have done both and have taken older kids (16+) on both. First thing, depends on when you sail. Any cruise you take during the "off-season" (not the summer or holidays) will probably have an older crowd regardless of which cruise line you take. Did Brilliance to the PC in late Feb and I would say the avg age was 45+. Did Celebrity Galaxy out of Baltimore in late Aug. and there were a whole lot of younger people. Forgeting about timing, I think RCCL is a better choice. Celebrity is geared for older folks, IMHO.

My definition of a Voyager Class vessel has always been:

"An Active Ship for Active People"

(I'll bet they steal my slogan someday) icon_wink.gif

Not to say you couldn't just relax around the pool (my DW loves the Adults Solarium area).

But I'm taking my 18 yr. old son this fall aboard Mariner and he can't wait to try out all the cool stuff. Besides the traditional sports activities they also have a huge video arcade and an even larger fitness center.

We also have plans to enjoy the 'one armed bandits' as it will be his first cruise in the 18+ category (needs parental permission to gamble).

And don't forget the disco lounges. Hopping to the wee hours.

I cannot speak for Celebrity at all. But with three different Voyager class ships under my belt I can positively say they should be happy aboard.

And while the weather tour was interesting it's not one of those 'have to do items'. Also, this is only aboard the Explorer, not the Navigator or other Voyager class (AOS, VOS, MOS).

During our 20+ years of marraige, DH and I have cruised about a dozen times: Carnival(done with them now), Windstar(one-time FABULOUS,unusual adventure), NCL(BIG disappointment; the ship was gorgeous, all else awful),RCI, and 2 last year on Celebrity. Cel. has super service - lots of little amenities - but we found that too many of the clientele were, well, stuffy is a polite way to put it. So, we're sailing on the Brilliance in a few months. RCI has always been our favorite, and we're comin' back, baby!!! icon_smile.gif

never been on celeb....the way a freind described it to me would make me think its a little to stuffy for a good time w very active kids. Besides i cam only think of the commercial where the guy says " i was begining to believe i was descended from royalty"

My DH & I have sailed on both. While the food & service were magnificent on Celebrity and the staterooms a little larger, the entertainment and atmosphere were much more exciting on Royal Caribbean. We sailed with our 2 sons 20 & 30 - March 2004 on Navigator (Western) and plan for March 2005 on Mariner. (Eastern)

Nothing better than cruising!!

Sailed on Celebrity 4 times, RCCL 4 times(as well as other lines)

Prefer RCCL Voyager class when we take our kids (18,21).

Have 2 future cruises booked on RCCL (Brilliance, Jewel) and two on Celebrity (Constellation, Galaxy). There are some things I generally prefer on Celebrity (Dining room food, more "formal" ambience) while there are somethings I prefer on RCCL (entertainment, 2 alternative restaurants).

Having said that, the best entertainment I had on a cruise was on one of the Celebrity sailings, while the best dining room meal was one I had on RCCL. So, it depends on the ship, the sailing, etc.

Have run into obnoxious folks on every ship I have sailed, and have also been privileged with the company of some really fun people on every sailing. Have had excellent service, good service, and fair service.

However, each cruise is what I make it. I choose to make each one a fun and memorable experience.

The only thing I can change in this world is me.

My family (DH, DD 22, DD 18 and DS 15 and I, plus my parents) had our best cruise ever on the Celebrity Millennium.

You cannot judge a cruiseline by the cruiseline. You have to look at each ship, schedule, etc. Example: Had I cruised on the RCI Monarch, and then took the Celebrity Millennium, I would probably be bashing RCI.
