Dinner Reservation Necessary for New Years Eve in San Diego?

Good Evening

We are booked at the Marriott Courtyard San Diego Airport/Liberty Station for 2 nights pre cruise, arriving on the 31st December 2010

Do you think we should make an advance reservation for dinner on New Years Eve or would we get somewhere when we arrive?

Any recommendations would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.:)

I would think any restaurants that will be open from the evening on (some may close to give their employees that holiday off) will be requiring reservations.

If you need to go shopping for things needed on your cruise, there may be some stores (like drug stores and grocery stores) that would have limited hours on the 1st.

Just curious, are you getting a car? Liberty Station is a bit off the main tourist path.

A lot depends on what you want to spend, and the style of place you want to be for NYE. If you plan to just have dinner and not ring in midnight it will be different than if you plan to spend the entire evening someplace and expect live music, dancing, and a big celebration in the same restaurant or hotel.

For something different, the last two years there has been a big party on the USS Midway (museum that is an aircraft carrier), and there are also harbor cruise/dinner/dancing trips. Most of the sites that list NYE events for San Diego have not yet been updated for this year, and still list last year's events, so you may want to check out places like SignOn San Diego a little later in the year for ideas:

Yes, we have rental car. We are Actually flying into LAX on 29th and spending a couple of nights in LA before driving down to San Diego. I am hoping the hotel isn't too far out!!

Thank you very much for you help and advice. I will keep checking the website you suggest.

At the moment, I have narrowed my search down to 3 Italian restaurants in the Gaslamp Quarter. I intend to email them regarding dinner around 7 or 8pm on the 31st. Not worried about doing anything at midnight.

These are restaurants, any recommendation would be appreciated :-

Thank you again.... :)

My favorite Italian restaurant in the Gaslamp (and I confess that it's the only one I've eaten at, but have been there 5 times) is De Medici. If you haven't checked it out, I highly recommend that you do so.

It is WAAAY too early to make a New Years eve res in San Diego!! This is not Disneyland where folks make their reservations 6months in advance!

IF you wait until around Thanksgiving there will be ads for New Years Eve dinners/ events

You can see them on http://www.opentable/.com

Last year we also did something different because we are

not late night folks. We went to The Field , which is an Irish pub in the gaslamp because they start celebrating in the afternoon when it is New Years in Dublin!!

Thank you Riffatsea but I hadn't intended trying to make my dinner reservation/s until nearer the time. I am simply working on my 'things to do list'.

If I ever go to Disneyland (which is unlikely) I will heed your advice regarding advance reservations.

Sorry!! I thought you sounded like you were e-mailing restaurants to get info and make reservations now.

The Disney reference was because I was recently on the Florida forum of Trip Advisor(so I guess that's Disney World not land) and realized that the folks that go there have a special meal plan where they must make their reservations months in advance or they won't be able to eat!!

Anyway, you should have lots of choices but prices and menus won't be out this soon.
