X Eclipse – Eastern Caribbean – 12/4-12/11/10

We recently returned from our first cruise ever. Overall, we had a very nice vacation, but it was not a flawless experience. Had I not discovered cc before we embarked, I would have missed out on a lot (thanks!) so in an effort to give back and give those with upcoming Eclipse cruises something more to obsess over, he’s my first review. It’s going to be long, so this will come in installments. Please ask questions if you like!

Embarkation

We stayed in South Beach before the cruise. We took a $20 cab to Port of Miami and arrived at 11am. Embarkation was slower than I anticipated. Security was fast, but waiting for a check-in counter was slow. The AQ and CC lines were short, but we were on deck 7 and our line got longer and longer. We boarded at 11:45, which wasn’t too bad.

Once we boarded we hung out at the Oceanview bar with drinks until rooms were ready at 1:30 (bags arrived at 2) – the buffet wasn’t crowded then. We returned at 3 to eat lunch and it was much more crowded, but we got a table outside near the Oceanview bar.

Lifeboat drill

Thiswas @ 3:45. We were assigned Murano. It’s pretty in there, but small, so many people had to stand. We did not have to bring life vests and just watched a video on a framed LCD, it was quick overall, maybe 30min.

Service

This is a loooong story. After the first few days we did not feel the pampering and top rate service that we expected from X based on cc reviews. However, we reported our problems and they were very well handled (see below part about the MDR). Even so, service was inconsistent. Our cabin steward Mario couldn’t have been sweeter and we also liked the activities staff, but there were other crew we encountered who were cold. We wondered if it was a cultural difference since many of these people were from Eastern Europe; they were not helpful or upbeat. I asked a lady working at Café al Baccio for a suggestion and she seemed annoyed. Service issues were our biggest disappointment. I’m not at all demanding, but I expected the same level of service/attitude I’d get at a good land hotel and it fell short at times.

Up next…dining

Thanks for your review! It's off to a really good start and I look forward to reading more. I understand what you mean about the service thing, especially as it relates to employees from eastern Europe. I felt some of the same thing on our August cruise on Solstice. It was water off of a duck's back though and focused on the wonderful time we were having.

I'm back! This one is going to be long, so hang on. I've broken it down into sections:

Oceanview café (buffet): Very good. It’s a buffet, so no gourmet experiences were expected or delivered, but we were impressed with the variety offered, the easy traffic flow even during busy times, and cleanliness. The offerings didn’t change much day to day, but there was so much to choose from it wasn’t an issue. The only lines we ever saw were for the ice cream counter, which was worth the wait! X does very good breads, cookies, and ice creams we discovered. I couldn’t have been happier than when I was sitting outside with a bowl of coconut sorbet with chocolate sauce and a chocolate ship cookie.

Aqua Spa Café: This is a very small venue with somewhat limited hours located near the solarium pool. The worst thing about this place? That it’s not open for dinner. The only other issue was the lack of seating. As the cruise progressed more and more people discovered this spot and it was standing room only at lunch. Some of what they offer is no different than the buffet (fruit, oatmeal…), but there are other unique things. At breakfast there are tons of different types of delicious rolls and real yogurt parfaits (they have yogurt cups in the buffet), at lunch I enjoyed the salmon burgers and the herb-poached fruit bar.

Q’sine: This was the only specialty restaurant we tried. It was worth every penny and certainly lived up to the hype. Finally, truly excellent service! Some say it’s no fun to go without a big group, but the two of us loved it and had fun talking to the neighboring 4-top.

We had a reservation at 6pm and left at 9:30! Our waitress was from S. Africa and seemed pushy at first (she made us shorten our list of items to try), but in the end was right in every suggestion. We had: M’s favorites (1st pictured below, server’s choice, the lamb and chili were very good), Qsine greens (with fried goat cheese and pomegranate dressing-yum), spring rolls –ok, sushi lollipops –also just ok, but the one rolled in Doritos was good, kobe tacos with make-your-own guacamole (this was the surprise hit), painter’s mignon (2nd pictured below, with great mac and cheese in the farthest jar). We canceled our remaining entrée so we could enjoy dessert: the chocolate tombstone (yummy) and make-your-own cupcakes (not great, lousy buttercream). Then our server came by with the tray of grass and choco/pop rocks-dipped strawberries and delish custard in eggshells (3rd pictured below, the strawberry was amazing). I tipped extra because this was a real highlight of the cruise.

Room service: It surprisingly good! We used the TV to order breakfast once and dinner once. Don’t forget, as we did, that he “quantity” doesn’t mean one serving it means one item so we pushed one French toast…but what came was one slice, one pat of butter … lesson learned. At dinner we were surprised by the quality of the food. We enjoyed the salmon and chicken. Everything was delivered fast and hot. One time our steward brought stuff and put it on our balcony, but another time we had someone else who used the coffee table. The pic is of two appetizers - asian sampler and mixed crostini/bruschetta.

Moonlight Sonata (MDR): We had been waitlisted for late seating, but had no trouble switching to that once onboard. We had a table for two, and yes it’s close to the neighbors, but not all the 2-tops are. On night 1 my partner opened the wine list and a big, dead bug was squished in there! Our server was not very friendly and rarely came by. The escargot was not good, all grease and no flavor, and the steaks from the everyday menu were bad. They arrived overcooked and mine had tons of grissle and was very tough. I also ordered the special spaghetti carbonara, and despite being unseasoned, it was the best thing we got (breads were good too though). We were rushed through our meal – it took barely over an hour. They cleared my partner’s plate while he had the fork in his mouth! We know the staff is partly new so we figured we’d try again and give them the benefit of the doubt, but on night 2 things were worse. Our main server never showed his face once and the assistant server was clearly overwhelmed. Our orders came out wrong multiple times (as did our neighbors’). Example- we received French onion soup twice, which we never ordered. Imagine our shock after sending it back when it returned ten minutes later. When our real order finally arrived we had the most horrid gnocchi ever. I do admit the lamb was quite good (still a bit fatty), but frustrated we bailed without dessert.

We boycotted for two more nights dining elsewhere, but I was really upset. I chose X based on rave reviews of the food and service and felt totally duped. So we did what we should have after the first night, went to guest relations to report the issue. They sent an “attention to detail” card to our cabin right away and our steward came to make sure we received it. I filled it out in detail and delivered it back to guest relations in the morning as we were leaving the ship for St Kitts. By the time we returned at 4, we had a message from the Maitre D on our voice mail, and a nice letter and bottle of white wine in our room. The Maitre D called again and spoke to me, encouraging us to try it again so we did. We met him (Polat) at the entrance just before our dining time and he took us himself to a new two-top in the middle of the dining room near the wine cellar. It had plenty of room around it. He then introduced us to our new server (from Jamaica), who was excellent. This experience couldn’t have been more different than our original. The pacing was right, we were there almost 2 hours, our main server made good rec’s and was very attentive, the sommelier lady was sweet and brought us complimentary champagne and the assistant waiter, Jayson, was really good – he de-crumbed our table and kept water refills coming. Polat came by to check on us midway through and so did the MDR manager, who said he was glad we brought this to their attention. That night we enjoyed the short ribs, meatballs (both pictured below), passion fruit cheesecake and pastry cigar and finally saw that hyped X customer service. On Friday we gave it another try and again Polat met us and brought us to the table we’d had on Wednesday. Again service was very good, though we didn’t like the menu as much. The whole thing did taint our overall experience somewhat, but we were very impressed with the way it was handled and left the ship happy.

IMG_0314.jpg

On a side note, we really enjoyed the brunch. We went to the MDR at 9:55 right before the brunch started. Our server was great, even though he only did drinks. The MDR looked lovely -ice sculptures, windmills made of bread… and there was tons of good food. No, it wasn’t way better quality than the buffet, but there were far more and different options. You could have fried chicken and waffles, yum. If you like sweets, that display was fantastic and tasty (chocolate fountain, see below). The only issue was that it got crowded so I didn’t try eggs benedict because the lines were always too long. No biggie.

Café Al Baccio: This is a nice café and you don’t need to spend a dime. The drinks all cost extra, but the pastry case is free. One night we got an assortment of dessert pastries to have on our balcony and another day we picked up an assortment of excellent finger sandwiches and a few little donuts (the case is pictured below), which we ate at the solarium pool. We did try the espresso drinks once and they were pretty good and not much more pricey than Starbucks.

IMG_2055.jpg

*side note: there was a Hanukkah service nightly in Celebrity Central. The service itself was so-so, but they had real jelly doughnuts and latkes with applesauce that were quite good.

DCGUYS> I love your review...it is so honest and well written, pictures are a nice touch... I hope it was just a bad week. We booked our first Celebrity Cruise thinking the extra $$$ would be repaid with better quality food and service.....oppsie!!!!

I appreciate the honest assessment. I try to always have realistic expectations and not sweat the small stuff. We sail on January 15th so this helps put me in the right frame of mind. We got a 'free' specialty dinner from our TA so I def. want to do Qsine.

Thanks

Thanks for the kudos, everyone :D

One of many things I learned (I'll try and summarize these at the end) was to take all cc reviews with a grain of salt! It doesn't matter what line you're sailing with, there are cheerleaders who make everything sound perfect so expectations get set really high. There are also people who complain about everything. I think even people on the same exact cruise can have different experiences since there are so many variables (servers, stewards, cabin location, personal preferences...).

Kidless, don't worry! The biggest lesson we learned is that if anything at all is less than 100% satisfactory for you, tell guest relations. As first-timers we were timid. If we'd discussed our dining issues after the first night, we'd have had a better overall experience.

Cathycruises, Q'sine is a must! Everyone was talking about it.

DCGuys:

I suggest that on your second cruise you go Crystal or Silversea. We've done both and they are fantastic!! BUT, and I emphasize BUT, we prefer Celebrity because we get best bang for the buck. This will be our 3rd go on Celebrity and are doing Eclipse in AQ on 1/15. And BTW, we are saving tons of $ over Crystal & Silversea.

So in summation, try Crystal or Silversea for the mega extra bucks and you'll appreciate what you get on Celebrity for what it costs.

I'd love to try a luxury line someday, but it will be a long time before we can afford it.

I do agree that we thought this cruise was a good deal. I had very limited dates on which I could sail (one week) and needed to go from Ft Lauderdale or Miami. So we priced out NCL Epic, Ruby Princess and Eclipse. Eclipse was the cheapest by a couple hundred $ pp. I know some people on cc get incredible deals, but without flexible sail dates we feel we got a great deal on a very nice ship with X. My only regret is that we didn't spring for AQ. We heard raves onboard about the service, atmosphere and food in Blu.

Great (well written) review with fresh pictures.

We will be on our first Celebrity cruise soon after 2 with NCL. Starting to not know if it will be better or worse, but I will be time warm in a warmer climate, so we'll be happy.

Thanks.

I can't compare myself, but my sister honeymooned on NCL and wasn't thrilled with the experience, which influenced our choice. We also pulled up next to Epic at one port and knew we'd made the right choice. We saw they had astroturf balconies and the noise from the pool area was loud. That just wasn't the experience we wanted this go-round. I'm sure you'll have a great time!

We are sailing Eclipse in January, our last cruise was on the Norwegian Gem, and I must say, they are quite different. We don't look at that as a bad thing, but try to appreciate the strengths of each. You will find Celebrity to be more formal overall --- just about everyone cleans up and dresses fairly nicely for the evenings, even on casual nights, which is a big change from NCL where it seems everything goes, dress-wise. I can't imagine seeing shorts or sweats in the MDR on Celebrity, but have seen those frequently on NCL. We find the food to be better on Celebrity in the MDRs and buffet, NCL has the edge re more choices for specialty restaurants but of course those have a surcharge. NCL also has had the edge in entertainment, at least on our cruises, and there is more going on in the evenings. We wouldn't hesitate to sail either line again ---- or Princess, for that matter--- but we do adjust our expectations going in.

Loving the informed review. Keep it coming. And your pics really put a nice visual to your story. I am glad this didn't turn you against cruising again, as it really is the ultimate vacation for me. After 26 cruises, I am still learning. I am also glad you shared about the disappointing steak, that one is making me re think a few things for our Jan 8 cruise. 9 times out of 10, I opt for the beef entree. I don't like seafood, ( I know, hard to believe),and am not that crazy about trying new things ( lamb, escargot, duck) I am sure there will be lots of choices to keep me happy. We've been on the fence about qsine, your pics gave us that little push we needed... ;) thanks!!

We were on the Eclipse the same week as you and I totally agree with your assessment of the food. It was our first time on Celebrity. The first day or two, I thought it was better than other cruises but then, it just seemed to not be up to par. When the chef's recommendation each night is something like Pork Belly, Mozarella meatballs, and mama's pork chops, you start to wonder about the food. Often, you were served something other than what you ordered. It happened several times with the ice cream flavors. Also, tea was nice but they hid bacon inside the mini croissants with no notice of that. Princess and NCL had better food. But the boat was definitely beautiful. I would go again with much lower food expectations. Murano was an exception. Very outstanding and worth every penny. Qsine was fine too, although knowing what to expect makes it less of an adventure. I am going to write a new post with events not to be missed.

Thanks everyone for following along and I'm so glad to hear you find it helpful. I took a little holiday break, but it's time for the next installment:

Design/Public spaces

It’s true, this ship is beautiful and it does not feel very big or crowded. The public areas are lush, mod and classy. The outdoor spaces are nice too, spa-like. We didn’t use the lawn club much, but liked the look and atmosphere it creates. It’s cool to walk barefoot. They had part of it closed throughout or cruise to redo the grass, but it wasn’t a big deal. The casino and art gallery are the only tacky parts (yes, I know a casino is a casino, but the choices they made with the chairs and ceiling paint were not up to design par with the look of the rest of the ship). Everything is gleaming and new. We were very impressed. I prefer boutique hotels and Eclipse certainly had that vibe. (Below-sky lounge, almost always empty during the day and several nights too, it would be a nice alternative spot to watch ports coming in or fading away if you don't want to be outside)

IMG_0394.jpg

Also, every morning there would be more holiday decorations. It was really fun seeing what had been added each night.

IMG_0359.jpg

Pool deck - I fell in love with the 4-poster hammocks on the pool deck (Below)! Yes, there were a lot of people on the pool decks on sea days, but we still got chairs on the inner deck of the main pool. We didn’t go to the pools before lunch hour though, preferring the afternoons. Surprisingly, the adult-only indoor solarium pool was always more crowded, though we could get seats in there too. We swam in all the pools and they are not as small as they look and were never crowded. As first-time cruisers we got a kick out of the fact that there were waves in the pools due to the roll of the ship up there! The hot tubs were great too. It really is relaxing to snooze by the pool on a comfy chair and watch the sea go by. I thought I’d get bored on sea days, but the time flew by.

IMG_0398.jpg

IMG_0396.jpg

Gym- While we didn’t use it nearly as much as we intended to or should have, we found the gym to be quite nice. We didn’t have to wait for equipment and what they have is great. The locker rooms (well, the men’s) were really nice too. We enjoyed the sauna and the fact that they had shaving cream and razors.

iLounge- I wish I’d managed to try a class. This place is cool looking, but it’s too small. The staff is overwhelmed too. We planned to use our laptops elsewhere, but we had issues logging in, which brought us back to the iLounge several times and the net was often down because too many people were using it. There was a lot of frustration over the Internet packages. We heard this from many passengers. Lesson learned, it's good to unplug so really do so and save the cash and time an internet package takes up (we used the first sea day 15% off coupon). We will just pay per use in the future so if the net is down, we won't be worried that we won't get our money's worth.

We have been with X for the last 5 trips and have found that the staff is there to please us at all cost. If how ever there is an issue we bring it up with management right when it happens and it has always been corrected on the spot. I am sorry that you waited a few days to make the correction.

As first-timers we were simply shy. While I would have reported such issues to a land hotel right away, I took us a while to feel comfortable on sea and onboard in several ways. People we met there said the first cruise is a learning cruise and I can't agree more.

Before I start the next post in earnest, I wanted to say something about the much discussed formal nights - We only ate in the MDR on the first formal night (we were in Qsine the next time). We found the food, decor and service were no different than other nights, which was disappointing, but maybe that’s the way it always is. There was no chateaubriand, but we thought the beef cheeks were pretty good. People were dressed up (even in Qsine). Most guys wore suits and ties followed closely by those who, like me, wore sport coats and ties with slacks. We only saw one or two tuxes. There was ballroom dancing in the grand foyer that we watched after dinner. Note: We didn’t have photographers come up to us much, if you want pictures, go seek them out. We did end up buying two.

Cabin

We were in a cat 1A, # 7290. This is on the aft angle of “the hump.” We loved our cabin! We could have upgraded for free to a C3, but it was pretty far aft on an upper deck. I agonized over the decision to stay in this cabin and I'm glad we did.

IMG_0381.jpg

IMG_1990.jpg

The décor is upscale and understated, there was plenty of storage for two people on a 7-nighter (big luggage fit under bed easily), and the bathroom was very nice. Yes, the toilet paper holder is annoying and so is the faucet, but I wouldn’t have paid these any mind if I didn’t know to look for them. The balcony on this cabin is one of the extra large ones, it is about 50% of the total room size – which was amazing and I spent a lot of time out there. The table is eating height and chairs are comfy even though they have no footstools. The location behind the flat part of the hump meant we felt no wind, even when it was really blowing by. We also were able to sit out there while it was raining (which happened a lot on this cruise) and not get wet. This was also a great location, right near the middle elevators/stairs (we almost always took the stairs to avoid waiting around) and it’s true, being midship really does limit the feel of motion. We found the bed super comfy too. Also, it was a really quiet cabin. We never heard a peep above, below or nextdoor. We liked the TV and how it works for many functions (facial recognition with the photographers is cool and it shows your pics while the radio feature plays) and were pleasantly surprised with the channels, which had current sporting events and lots of free, pretty recent on-demand movies. There was a day when the accounting function broke down ship-wide and we laughed at the misspellings on tv, but overall it was nice. They also do turn-down service and every night and give you different types of chocolates, which made for a fun surprise after a long day.

We did have a couple odd moments in there. One night we head a gentle thudding noise and assumed that was the normal ship creaking sound I’d read about, but in the a.m. we realized that the divider between ours and our forward neighbor’s balconies had come unhinged. Guest relations sent someone to put in new bolts.

Beware the front door though – pull them closed hard. Maybe it was just our cabin, but the door was hard to close all the way and lock. On the first formal night around midnight we were watching a movie in bed when a lady in a black evening gown opened our cabin door ! She looked mortified to see us cuddled on the bed in PJs and ran. We thought our door was closed! Our steward brought someone to come look at the lock in the a.m. and nothing was broken. It was pretty funny. We never did see her again around the ship.
