Any updates on where you would suggest some of us meet for a night before the cruise meal? We are at the Doubletree for the first time. Any place nice within walking distance? Thanks.

22nd Street Landing is the closest restaurant. You could also walk to Ports O Call Restaurant if you feel up to a little hike.

I notice you never include Limani's in your recommendations. Last April you gave them a very positive review. Last month our roll call had a delightful pre-cruise dinner there. Is their some reason why you omit them, or is it (as I suspect) that you haven't yet updated your list?:)

We're booked at the Doubletree San Pedro for one night before our 36-day cruise on Queen Elizabeth. I called the hotel and they offer long-term parking at the hotel for $25 per week. I know it's uncovered and that's ok. Just wondering if the car will be secure in that parking area?

Can anyone advise? Our other option is $12 a day at the port's parking.

Thanks, Brigid-

It's safer in the port parking lot.

Although I've not used the park & sail in over a year now, since Royal Caribbean pulled out of Calif. in the past I have left my car several times up to two weeks without any problems.. It's always been free.

Thanks for the info. But I'd like to know why it's safer to park in the port parking than at the DoubleTree Hilton? Neither parking area looks secure, like with a fence. Just wondering what you get for the $12 a day at the port's parking lot?

Thanks for the help.

We will be staying there in April and have booked Super Shuttle for a party of 4 - I found a coupon online it came out to about $16 per person. They do stop at other hotels but we are arriving late (10:30 pm arrival) so hoping there aren't too many other stops on the way to San Pedro. With all the luggage we didn't think a cab could accommodate us LOL

I have parked my car (and motorhome once) at the Doubletree and the Cruise terminal. I am not sure which one is safer, but we never had a problem at either one. The doubletree is not secure in the sense that there isn't even a fence around the property. However, because it's a decent hotel, I think they have security that makes their rounds around the parking lot, and during the day, there are plenty of people around (not sure if that really matters or not). We left our motorhome parked in the Doubletree for one of our cruises and it was fine when we returned (as well as our car once). I think the cruise terminal had a fence, and of course the exit has the security guy who you pay. It's probably more secure, but also more expensive. We usually wan to get to the area a day before the cruise anyway, so if we were already paying for the hotel, we got the "free" parking too (not that it's free...as they charge your more for your room to include the parking).

We've booked (thru Hotwire) the San Pedro Inn for 2 nights prior to our cruise in early March. The reviews on Trip Advisor indicate that it is a nice property but in a questionable neighbourhood. Should we be wary? Also, we won't have a car, any recommendations for restaurants within walking distance or a short cab ride away.We are looking for restaurants with food that is suitable for 12 and 13 year old boys.

Thanks

It would NOT be my choice for a hotel...especially with two nights and no car...

It's at a VERY BUSY intersection...near where the 110 Freeway dumps out onto Gafney Street...

What you have close by is a very tacky liquor store, a 7-11, two gas stations, a Burger King, a Wienerschnitzel, a Hawaiian Fast Food place and a donut shop...

All of the decent restaurants and attractions of San Pedro are about a 10 to 20 block walk away minimum...and not exactly a scenic walk...taxis are not easy to find...You are going to have to call for them...and the ride is a little long to walk...and a little short for taxi drivers to want to come get you for the small fare...

Did you pre-pay with Hotwire?

Well, for any others reading this thread: Please heed my recommendation and, if you plan on being two nights without a car in San Pedro, please choose the Crowne Plaza or Doubletree...

The Crown Plaza would have put you within easy walking distance of over a dozen very good restaurants perfectly suited for your family...and close to attractions on the waterfront...The Doubletree would have put you in pleasant surroundings at the Marina and a nice walk along the waterfront...or the DT would shuttle you free to restaurants...

And both are much nicer hotels...

JMHO...

It's an OK hotel at a very busy intersection. You have a few decent restaurants within walking distance. Sushi 21, Jasmine Hana (Thai), Gaffey Street Diner (breakfast and lunch) as well as the fast food places Bruin Steve mentioned. They do have a shuttle so call and ask them if they will shuttle you into downtown or Ports O Call for a better experience.

Will be at the Doubletree San Pedro for four nights between cruises and will both need a haircut. Are there any places relatively nearby? We are both strong walkers (4 1/2 miles per day) and could use the walk for our daily exercise. :)

Doubletree has a salon attached to it. If it is too busy try Saul at the Grand Salon in downtown San Pedro.

A couple of weeks ago, my wife and I enjoyed two beautiful days in San Pedro, as part of a surprise I have been planning for her for over a year. The surprise will eventually culminate with another visit to San Pedro before we cruise to Hawaii on March 27, her 50th birthday.

I used various San Pedro area sights and sounds (such as photos and music from the Fanfare Fountains) throughout the year as clues. Finally on February 15 I brought her to San Pedro where she was literally moved to tears by the fountains and music.

It was the most incredibly beautiful day, with clear views of Mt. Baldy (which had special significance to my wife from her childhood) and Catalina Island too.

The places we enjoyed visiting in San Pedro (in addition to the fountains of course) included the Pacific Electric Railway Red Car, Acapulco restaurant, Crafted at the Port of Los Angeles, the Omelette and Waffle Shop, and the Korean Friendship Bell. We also enjoyed going to Ports O' Call in the early morning on February 16 to watch the Sapphire Princess come into port, and then we boarded the ship for a few hours.

There were other sights we missed that I had planned for us to see in the San Pedro area, but we will have time for that later (not only on March 27, but I suspect that we will be returning to San Pedro often when we want to get that cruise-port feeling without being able to actually afford going on a cruise).

All in all, San Pedro totally fulfilled my expectations as a romantic destination. If you want more details about what we did in San Pedro, here is the big thread I have been updating now for almost a year:

We are arriving in LA (San Pedro) on the Coral Princess April 20. WE will have our luggage to deal with! We can't use the Express luggage feature on the ship as we are Canadian. We will not be renting a car.

Questions-

Is there somewhere we can store luggage nearby? Does it cost anything?

Hotel nearby that will store for the day?

Interested in going to Catalina Island maybe- How do we get there from the cruise ship dock?

How long will it take to get to the ferry?

How long is the ferry ride?

Are the ferries frequent on a Saturday?

How far is it to LAX? I understand that it can be up to an hour's trip with traffic.

We have a 9:40pm flight so have to be at the airport 3 hours early(approx 6:30pm) Would we have enough time to explore Catalina Island between 11am and 5pm?

Any other suggestions for our day in San Pedro?

Is there a public bus that would get us to LAX from San Pedro port?

Are there transfer services available at the port rather than prebooking a service? (I know the ship offers transfers for $24/pp but we don't want to sit in LAX for 10 hours!)

Sorry I am asking so many questions but we leave Toronto on Saturday and I don't have a lot of time to do research-only booked the trip Monday!!

The Catalina Express leaves from under the Vincent Thomas bridge, very close to the cruise terminal. It's and easy walk. However, the number of trips per day are few except on the weekend. Check the schedule at CatalinaExpress.com

I'd like to start this thread and try and keep it as the definitive "go to" for ?'s about San Pedro. I currently live in San Pedro moving from West LA in 1999 where I lived for 19 years, originally from Macedonia, Ohio. I have lived in the Los Angeles are since 1980. My wife, Alison, was raised here in San Pedro so she has seen it all!!

I find San Pedro to be very misunderstood by TA's throughout the world and those that live in SoCal but are outside the area. San Pedro is definitley a working port town but has plenty to offer cruise passengers as well as those looking to kill an afternoon before heading to the airport.

If you have any questions in regard to our beautiful town please feel free to ask and I will try and answer them to the best of my ability.

Welcome to San Peeeeeeeeedro!!!!

We arrive in San Pedro on a Wednesday. I'm familiar with the World Cruise Center (Carnival) but this time we are supposed to dock about 2 miles south of it at Pier #46. Friends who live in Long Beach are picking us up for lunch and I have no idea where to tell them to meet us. I'm assuming foot & vehicle traffic into the port itself will be restricted. Any place we could walk to that would be a good meeting spot?

thanks!

Molly
