If you could on an 11 day Celebrity cruise for FREE, as long as you and your spouse refrained from ALL alcohol, would you do it?

 

In a heartbeat because as it is now we did a 10-day Celebrity cruise alcohol free and PAID for it. :cool:

of course i'd give up booze for a free cruise............if you can't, you have a problem...............:confused:

The discussion is to see if alcohol is really a necessity for most people who cruise. No one is judging you or forcing you to answer.

I have been on the equivalent of 24 cruises without alcohol. I would not take a free cruise if I HAD to drink.

Just to take a different point of view I would turn it down. I easily could go without alcohol that long but we go on a vacation for enjoyment. Part of that enjoyment is a relaxing drink as we watch the world go by.

When comparing vacations, Resorts like Sandals include food and alcohol, most cruise lines include food, and make a big profit on the alcohol.

 

For non alcohol drinkers the cruise is a better value.

The cruise industry must feel that you need booze to have a good time. This is their biggest profit center. They need to push the drinks.

For a percentage of folks it's true. Alcohol is the foundation of their cruise and their biggest expense.

 

So here is my question.

Silk Shirt - I could very easily go without a drink during a cruise because I very rarely drink. The only reason I drink at all during a cruise is because I feel pressured to buy one if I am sitting in a ship's public lounge area for a long period of time.

Not pointless at all. Some folks are honest enough to admit that they would give up a FREE 11 night Celebrity cruise if they couldn't have alcohol.

During the 1st Persian Gulf war I (and 800 other sailors and marines) spent 99 days at sea without pulling into any port. During that time we were given 2 beers each, every 45 days. Period.

 

I am not sure if you are familiar with the phrase "Drunk as a Sailor" but it is NOT an accident that that phrase exists.

 

If I (and 800 other sailors and marines) can go 44 days without any alcohol then it should be a "piece of cake" for an "average" drinker to go 11 days.

 

That said, I wouldnt want to go on a free 11 day cruise if I couldnt have a piece of cake (or the dessert equivilent).

 

Oh, and unlike most who answered here that they dont drink much so they could do it, I do drink.

my dh and i had the classic alcohol package on our last two celebrity cruises and would also be the perfect test subjects..............i'm starting a collection..............:D

No problem! DH doesn't drink alcohol at all and I could easily give up the 3-4 drinks per cruise that I drink (and that's the max I drink). Many times both of us have gone without alcohol for entire cruises. Now giving up diet coke on the other hand might be more difficult for me... :rolleyes:

I drink more on a cruise than I probably do the rest of the year combined. It's part of my vacation (and yes, I spend more personally on alcohol than I do on my cruise fare!).

Sure I would do it, and my husband would too. We never drink any more (did drink when we were younger and we both realized that you don't need alcohol to have a good time!!) As a matter of fact, life is way better without it. This is why we're better off cruising rather than going to resorts. :p :p

When not on vacation I rarely drink at all. But during vacations I like to kick back w/ all sorts of drinks during the day, wine w/ dinner, nightcaps, martinis. Last trip on the Solstice I was a regular at the Molecular bar and I had the premium drink package. I also get free drinks in the casino which I take advantage of.
But for a FREE CRUISE? I'd drink nothing but water if that were the requirement.
