sdlipton Posted June 15, 2011 #1 Share Posted June 15, 2011 Fellow CC'ers, Random question I know and I searched but couldn't find it. Is the glass in the Solarium on Oasis of the Seas UV Protected? My wife burns VERY easily so we wnated to know. Thanks a bunch.
cb at sea Posted June 15, 2011 #2 Share Posted June 15, 2011 If it's under glass, she really won't tan....at least, I'm not able to, and I tan easily. She should always wear sunscreen, especially if she's avoiding the sun!
yellosno Posted June 15, 2011 #3 Share Posted June 15, 2011 There is a lot of area in the Solarium that is in the shade, enjoy
Rare Familygoboston Posted June 15, 2011 #4 Share Posted June 15, 2011 I'm also sun sensitive and have not seen anywhere that solarium glass is uv protected. I would imagine it's not given the cost. But I have also enjoyed the various solariums and never burned. Depending on the ships direction, there are always shady spots ( and you'll have better luck with finding a lounger there too). I do use my sunscreen daily anyway, but have never felt overexposed to the sun there the way I might by the pool or in port.
negc Posted June 15, 2011 #5 Share Posted June 15, 2011 I wouldn't count on it and while the glass may screen out UVA rays, it may not do the same for UVB rays. If your wife, like many of us, is sensitive to the sun she should be certain to wear a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. Better safe than sorry and skin cancer is definitely something to be avoided.
JJ2sail Posted June 15, 2011 #6 Share Posted June 15, 2011 The Oasis Solarium is not completely enclosed, there are sections of glass overhead, but it is mostly sunny.
Beth C Posted June 15, 2011 #7 Share Posted June 15, 2011 I spent many hours in the solarium and I would tend to think that it's protected somehow since I too burn very easily and didn't when sitting in there.
BrianAlt Posted June 15, 2011 #8 Share Posted June 15, 2011 I sure don't think so. We spent most of our time there and we definitely got tanned/burned.

wingnutphl Posted June 16, 2011 #11 Share Posted June 16, 2011 Interesting question. Never would think to ask since I don't normally burn. I would email RCI and ask since it's sensitivity question.
sherilyn70 Posted June 16, 2011 #12 Share Posted June 16, 2011 I know I have had sunburns even through glass so I would never trust it. :)
Langley Cruisers Posted June 16, 2011 #13 Share Posted June 16, 2011 There is enough reflection to cause burning there anyway. DW should be aware. There is actual shade on the pool deck. She could find a lounger on the side of the ship that has shade. There were lots of passengers sitting there on Oasis.
sgermic Posted June 16, 2011 #14 Share Posted June 16, 2011 I might not be allowed to post this, but there's this company that sells sun protective fashion. They have these great tunics and t-shirts that block out a lot of UVA and UVB rays. www.Mott50.com
