People keep saying on here how they are happy the smoking is sure to be banned one day, but they do not understand health problems they could help by stopping alcohol on board. It would drastically stop the drunks from accidentally falling overboard. There are far more accidental drunk overboard incidents documented than actual second hand smoke killings. So do you think the cruise industry really cares about your health or profits. And the oh reason they are acting out on such a policy change is because they supposedly took a poll somewhere and these few polled wanted no smoking in cabins. it all depends where and how the poll was taken. Heck if you poll nothing but hippies they would state they wish they had bongs in every room. I nor have I heard that anyone here was polled, so where was this so called poll taken, never never land?

LOL every time you mention food or booze I shake my head in wonder. Its not about what people do to themselves. Smoking causes cancer, thats a fact. Second hand smoke causes cancer, thats a fact. Its not about places you can avoid that people are talking about mostly here. When smoke creeps under your door when your trying to sleep, cause the person next door is smoking away, you cant avoid that. If I get drunk and fall overboard guess what, its just me. If I eat tons of food and get fat guess what its just me. Dont compare what people do to themselves, to what smoke does its not even close to the same.

Wow, please read your own words, you can make a choice for healthy selections, same goes for the choice to sit in an area, such ad the piano bar in smoke. Why is it you want everyone else to make choices but everything you would like should be exactly like you want it, I am trying to think of the phrase they call people like that, but it escapes me right now........ Lol

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion...it's not that I want it all 'my' way...I chose to avoid an area where smoking was allowed because I didn't want to smell like an ashtray afterwards !

I pay the same $ for my cruise as smokers do...why should I endanger my health (I chose not to smoke) with someone else's left-over smoke just because they made a poor decision to start smoking !

Smokers are in the minority these days. Many people have realized that smoking is bad for their health, or they have had major medical issues arise from their bad habit (Lung, Throat, or Mouth Cancer, Emphysema, COPD or Asthma) and have had the courage to quit. My DH being one of them - He is now 11 years smoke free and I am very proud of him :D

IMHO I'm glad that Carnival has made these policy changes...too bad it's not effective sooner.

Here in Louisiana a while ago the law was passes that smoking was band in all venues, resturants/bars etc. The only place smoking isn't banned is Casinos and thier is a HUGE campaign to have that banned as well.

As a non smoker who lived my with grandma smoker for years, I think th epolicey is coming with the times. Eventually, like it or not, someone going to want cigs considered illegal. Having a cig is giving you and everyone around you the possibly of cancer. I personally, and I'll probaly get flamed for this but, I don't even think you should smoke on balconies. Just like one side of the lido is for smokers, I think one side of the ships balconies should be for smokers, that way non smokers don't have to be next to a smoker.

I know some won't like that idea but I don't think its fair that I have to breathe in cig smoke and risk getting cancer from second hand smoke. I've never been to the piano bar on any of my cruises because of the smoke, and I stick to near the doorways at the casino.

To me.......I REPEAT.......TO ME that seems a bit extreme, but it is your choice.

I am also trying to cancel my cruise as this was NOT policy at the time of booking.....I have a timeshare that I can go to whatever resort of my choosing..I use to give Carnival one of my weeks..now I'll give it to the resort... And I have a vista suite booked on the Spirit,,Tell you CARNIVAL is going to get dinged.....as we always cruise 7 day cruises or longer and in suites.....

How does anyone know how much the new rules will affect them when they take their cruise BEFORE they step on board is beyond my understanding.

Cancelling cruises and selling stock is behaving like a naughty child who just had their toys taken away...foot stamping, teddybear chucking...over something they have no idea whatsoever if it will actually affect them.

Smokers have the entire starboard side of outer decks, balconies and selected areas inside the ship in which they can light their precious firestick...its not like you will be snowed on if you go outside...

And before anyone jumps saying that I would not understand the precious firestick argument...erm, well actually I do...I used to smoke very heavily til my health suffered for it, so I gave up the firesticks.

Oh and in most of Europe...there are full smoking bans in place, so even if you enjoy a firestick on your balcony or on the starboard side of the ship or in a designated lounge...you'll not be allowed to light up when on land...

Happy puffing...and no, I do not mean on the firesticks...I mean the shows of tantrum cos you have to conform with rules. Afterall, you can probably bet your packet of firesticks that people who refused to comply with the previous rules that caused them to be tightened...the minority of selfish smokers ruining it for those happy to follow what they are told.

One firestick butt over the side is one too many...and how quickly 2006 can be forgotten, eh?

Every time new no-smoking changes happens, it's like someone slapped smokers in the face, get over it. If so many smokers, not all, were more considerate, then some of these changes would not be neccessary. I intentionally always sit on the non smoking side of the Lido, but inevitably here come Smoky Joe at a table next to me and lights up, and when I ask them to please put that out, bam, attitude, although they are wrong. So if you wish to smoke, your choice your business, but I do not want to be around it, so good luck with your non Carnival sailing, and happy trails.

All this smoke blowing and foot stomping about canceling cruises won't last long. There is nothing like a cruise, and no land resort can honestly compare. Sure, there may be better land resorts, but there's nothing like a great 'sail away' party, a dozen different sunsets and sunrises from half a dozen differnent Caribbean islands and at sea locations, the variety of entertainment, and the fellowship cruisers share in the common bond of being on a cruise ship. Land resorts are one thing, a cruise is a whole differnent world unto itself; the motion of the ocean, the romance, the good times, the early morning arrival into a port of call, the smell of the salt air and the wind in your hair, and at night when the ship is all aglow...there's nothing like it.

I’m not sure what all this hysteria is about?

The only place’s that really has changed is the cabins and the Piano bar.

I’m a smoker and have never smoked in my cabin, the balcony yes.., the sanctioned lido bar –yes

The piano bar.. sure but on the last three cruises… I was in and out of the bars as the talent wasn’t so good. In fact the only time on the dream last august that the piano bar was packed was the night that they let in a lot of the staff ( not just the officer’s).

So I see it as no big deal. Just once again over hyped PR that placates people but really does not change much… CCl is truly a master at this…

But with hysteria does come perhaps an opportunity..

CCl recently stated ( 3 days or so ) due to some 300 plus sailings ( mid east, Japan ) they downgraded the revenue and projected a 15 cent per share cost. I know that cruise critic represents a very small percentage of the customers. But if this goes viral , might be some room with the hysteria for a price drop and some gain in the short term.

Also I have for some time thought that while CCL has been very successful in reaching their targeted base ( Budget cruisers) , the prices are to cheap causing cutbacks in food and entertainment and cliental.

Perhaps the smoking policy , will have a effect on revenue ( much like it has had for bars on land), they have for the last 3 years sold cheap rooms and made up with high priced services.. if there is a revenue drop in bars which is a well documented profit center , maybe the model changes a bit.. Charge more enhance quality

Only time will tell.

In the meantime, hope all have a great vacation..

You mean extreme addictions right:confused:

We ALL have addictions of one type or another---coffee, sodas, food, etc etc (and no I am not talking about alcohol or drugs)

I am a smoker who has just about quit---it's very hard to do- so please dont be so judgemental about smokers.
