Current Captains Con't

Recommended Posts

Captain Rob is headed for vacation within the next 2 sailings. Following a 10 week rotation, I would expect him to be back in time for my B2B.

Anyone had him before? I've heard good things!

We had him on Oasis last year and also on Rhapsody several years ago for Alaska. Very personable.

Excellent. I had heard good things, which I am glad about - I don't want another invisible Captain like the one in July 2016 on Anthem.

Captains are often invisible except for the toast, pictures, and Captain’s Corner. I never expect a captain to interact with me, other than if they make eye contact to perhaps nod. Most all Captains do that.

Captain Slaby is the exception to this. Am I the only person who feels like this?

This particular Captain didn't even do a Captain's Corner or a Welcome Aboard Reception. Didn't see him around the ship and couldn't tell what he looked like. In addition, he had a monotonous voice over the PA - Capt. Gus and Capt. Johnny both tried to be upbeat in their announcements, which I liked.

I agree, Captain Marek is certainly one of the most visible Captains we have sailed with. He certainly seems to enjoy his job! I'd put Captain Johnny in the same category.

Captain Gus was also the same. Although he isn't as extrovert as Captain Johnny, he is very friendly and visible. Runs a good Captain's Corner and PA announcements.

Do you expect a captain to do more than I mentioned?

I expect them to be interested in the guest experience. If they don't want that, there are many maritime jobs outside of cruise ships. I personally disliked that the Capt on Anthem did not run a Captain's Corner session, as I look forward to that every cruise. That Captain is now on Quantum in Asia, so probably doesn't need to interact with guests much.

Ultimately, I trust that every Captain is able to get us there safely. Would much rather sail with the above Captain than Schettino.

You know my wife and I are paying for a beautiful cruise. We get a cabin steward that visits our cabin twice a day.

We go to a dining room with a waiter and asst. waiter that serves us.

We might have a few drinks at the many bars around the pool or when someone is playing the piano. Casino, movie or whatever ?

We very often go to the theatre to some sort of show be it Broadway or not.

You know what we want from the Captain ?

STEADY AS SHE GOES !

Sometimes he/she has to go around bad weather or sometimes he /she has to speed up.

Usually get to ports as near as on time as possible.

Hopefully if tendering the weather allows us to do so but he makes a safe call .

But besides that if I see him or her or not I do not care !

Oh .... One other thing .... Allows me to sleep when he or she can as much as possible.

We are happy. Anything else is extra.

How about you ?

I know that’s right! Today at Roatan, A MSC ship wiped out a good chunk of the dock ramming it. They had one job, arrive at pier safely. RC Liberty cannot dock there tomorrow as they will likely still be assessing Armonia.

Although I like some Captains better than others, you know that you are in safe hands with any RCI Captain.

Ever sailed with Captain Rob?

Nope, I’m not a Captain groupie other than Captain Marek. I’ve been on 16 different ships in a decade, so I’m sure we did at some point.

I'm not so much a Captain groupie as I am a CD groupie (as you can tell), but given that they work in the cruise industry as opposed to other parts of the maritime industry, they ought to interact with guests and keep things a bit light-hearted. Some of the Captains that I have sailed with don't have that.

Hi, I was on the 6 April to 9 April Mariner Cruise and the current Captain was Capt Angel Oviol.

I believe he is also taking the ship back to Barcelona

Captain Oviol left the ship March 29. He’s on vacation now and will be onboard for the Transatlantic sailing (no passengers) and in FL after that on Mariner. Info is on his social media personal page. Would like to know who the current captain is.

Also, whilst getting the ship around safely is the top priority, and an effective Captain in that regard is a must, I don't think it is a coincidence that the more personable Captains are assigned to new ships:

e.g. Henrik Loy to Ovation; Gus & Johnny to Harmony; Rob & Rick to Symphony. The lesser known Captains seem to be on smaller ships. I wouldn't be surprised to see Marek on a new build eventually, as he has been on VI for a while and is due a move soon. Maybe he will be one of the two Spectrum or Quantum 5 Captains?

Marek wants a move, he tells people that. I hope he gets one.

I'm not surprised. Vision doesn't have all of the bells and whistles and it must get boring returning to the same ship over and over again. Plenty of larger ships that he could be moved to - currently unknown who is the relief captain on Indy. Or, he could get Ovation if one of her masters switches to Spectrum and stays in Asia, which isn't unheard of.

Marek makes any ship he’s on come alive. If he has ever felt less than on Vision, it sure hasn’t showed. Does his own bridge tours, very positive and active. Reaches more guests then any captain I have ever seen. In a league of his own.

That's why I think that he should get a larger ship next - as he wants a transfer and is perfect for a big ship with more people.

I do hope he doesn't get Spectrum though, as his people skills would be wasted in China.
