That's why I think that he should get a larger ship next - as he wants a transfer and is perfect for a big ship with more people.

I do hope he doesn't get Spectrum though, as his people skills would be wasted in China.

 

 

 

There are a lot of experienced Captains who prefer smaller ships that still feel and look like real ships without bells and whistles. For many it is much more fun to drive a Radiance class that are more powerful with the gas turbines to different itineraries around the world than an Oasis class that runs like a bus to just 7 ports on Caribbean east or west. Not so challenging for a seamen if you have done it for several months. Going to new ports in different areas is the real challenge. Number of passengers does not matter at all. It is not always a preference or considered as a promotion to go to the big ones. One of the best Captains never left Radiance class for a reason..

Yeah...and that reason was personal preference...which is fine.

 

Make no mistake...being assigned to one of the larger ships is indeed a promotion.

 

It requires different/expanded knowledge and skill-sets. That's not to minimize or reduce the value other ship Captains bring with their role to the other ship size classifications, but to say it's not a promotion is simply inaccurate.

It might be an honor and a recognition of seniority and good performance but it is officially not a promotion.

That would be a shame to see him go to a large ship.

In general yes. Higher pay is related to seniority but not to size of a ship. A captain is a captain (and Royal does not have a commodore as chief captain like Cunard, P&O or Disney).

Yes.

Johnny still manages to be visible and has worked exclusively on Oasis Class for nearly 8 years.

Captains are indeed more visible on smaller ships. E.g. on Symphony no more daily Captain’s anouncements and no Captain‘s corner. Johnny is the exception as he does daily video messages on his initiative. On smaller ships we met Captains e.g. at the coffee shop, in the fitness center or at the gangway. No chance anymore on the floating cities.

Where are you getting that info from?

They had a Captain's Corner on the SY inaugural - it's on YouTube.

Also, Johnny and Gus both do Captain's Corner and daily announcements on HM, so I think you are making that one up. Same when we had Johnny on Allure and Per on Oasis.

Well, I am currently on Symphony on the inaugural. I indeed overlooked that there was a Captain‘s corner today (small info in the daily program only) but no daily anouncements as I said. This is not a criticism, Captain is great but things change on big ships.

Just checked the roll call for this cruise - and it states we are in cabin 8526 - should be changed to 8500 - we have the Royal suite - KStevens 78 is listed as 8500 - we have an invoice to prove this - sorry to post here wrong place
