Is this an upgrade?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Just wondering whether I should be happy or not. We are due to sail on Pacific Pearl on 10th August and today while reviewing the cruise personaliser I noticed we have been given an upgrade from category H to G. Now I know we had an obstructed oceanview but we were on deck 9 but now we have an oceanview on deck 5. I have tried to change it back, but to no avail. Anyone stayed in 5145 or Pearl or around that cabin that can give me some information? I have learned a valuable lesson today,do not tick the upgrade box.

Hi,

I don't think it is too bad. The Cat H cabins are pretty small, while 5145 should be more of a standard size. Given it is not an 'obstructed' your view should be better, the only negative is that it is lower in the ship and indeed this can be a positive if you suffer from any effect of motion!! Looks to be reasonably close to the lifts so getting up and down may not be too bad - in balance I think you will be ok!!

Cheers,

Thanks for the input. I know I should feel happy about it, but just can't seem to get excited. We were happy with the original cabin, but apparently there is nothing we can do! We have never been in an oceanview before or so low a deck , so all will be a new experience .......one that I am sure we will enjoy. (This is what retirement is all about.....cruising as much as possible anywhere on the ship!!) I did ask P&O to be waitlisted for our original cabin and it was going to be $6000.00 if I got it again! (go figure!!)

David....you seem to be answering all my questions at present. I telephone P&O this morning re the Orsova and they require more information that I can obtain, but I am still trying. I have Dad going thru the garage looking for everything!!!!!

I would be delighted. I think it is a great up-grade. Deck 5 is very convenient and being lower in the ship there is less movement in rough seas (hope you don't get rough seas!). An obstructed view is much better than an obstructed view.

Have a great cruise.

When we first started cruising we though the higher the better,

But now we love Main deck as it is close to pursers desk, gangway, Laundry perhaps, and Tourist services etc.

If we are on a carnival USA ship we book Main deck Aft Balcony as they are affordable on Carnival Cheapest Unobstructed Balcony category.

Just remember it doesn't matter what deck you are on -there are elevators.

On our up and coming Pacific Sun cruise we are on Main deck again.

A deck or two higher makes little difference.

ENJOY the unobstructed view.

Hi all, I know you are all probably right, it was just a bit of a shock to go down 4 decks. This is our first P&O cruise, our first oceanview and our first on a lower deck. We are going with an open mind and I am sure it will be great!:) Oh and I forgot, the cheapest cruise we have ever been on!:D

We were in cabin 5160 (outside) which was pretty near the middle of the ship and oh so handy for my other half to nick out to Charlie's Bar first thing in the morning and get a take away cup of hot water.

That went perfectly with the tea bags and milk sachets that I had taken from the buffet and once I had my cup of tea, I was ready to face the rest of the world.

Thanks all, Yes we have learnt a lesson.....we won't tick the upgrade box in future. We will still have a great time. I do like the idea now of being near Charlies Bar....I love my coffee first thing in the morning!:)

We are sailing on Pacific Pearl on 29th Aug, and have some friends that have decided to do the cruise also at the last minute, they booked a guarantee obstucted view and have just checked their personaliser and have been given an outside cabin with a port hole on deck 4, they don't know what to think of this as it is their first cruise, and we can't help as we have never been down that low before, has anyone travelled on this deck that can shed any light as to what to expect. Thanks Robin:)

I think from all the posts I have read over the years the only complaints have been about expensive cabins located under the pool deck. I think once you are onboard you will be enjoying yourself that you wont even remember worrying where your cabin is located. :)

Many people prefer the lower decks for ease of being near to the restaurant, atrium and promendade deck as well as the lesser movement.

Very wise Thied. If you get upgraded to the Captain's cabin you must go down with the ship!

I am on the same cruise and also was visited by the upgrade fairy.

Having said that I went from cat H midships obstructed view to cat F deck 6 109 right up the front....not what I consider an upgrade at all.

Ron

Yes, it is funny how the upgrade fairy can work! We also would have preferred our orginal cabin. In saying thatm I have learnt a lesson, if we are happy with our original selection, we will tick the "no upgrade box".

I am sure we will all have a great time anyway.

You will love deck 5,:D it's the best deck on any ship I think. You assume that higher must be better because it's more expensive but it's not. After 12 cruises deck 5 is our chosen deck for convenience, comfort and COFFEE! and it was so quiet in the cabin and we were near the Casino, never heard anything. Charlies bar is a great spot for good coffee, Pacific Daily's on hand, comfy chairs etc. One thing we liked about Pac Pearl, seemed to always be able to get a seat in lounges, bars, buffet, outside decks etc.

I'm on that same Cruise as well. First time Cruiser with the jail warden and another couple of friends of mine.

Should be good.....we'll be those loud, annoying travellers ;)

I've got an Outside twin about mid-ship. Not sure the cabin number (can't be bothered looking) but I won't tell you how much I paid !

:)

we loved the smoking area on deck 12 as they have lounge chairs for the smokers at the cafe bar.....wonder how long they'll stay there as the non smokers dont have them on their side

Who gets to pick their own cabin??? - only people who pay more than us.

We always book a "guarantee" - and take what comes. Cheapest way to cruise - and sometimes we get a VERY nice surprise.

We only book guarantee as well....I actually love checking the personaliser to see what cabin we have, neither of us care where on the ship we end up and we always get an upgrade from the inside guarantee...our best was a balcony on the Arcadia, the rest were ocean view and the least we got was an inside on A deck....lets us cruise more often :):D
