Hi there

Could someone please tell me exactly what's involved in the Polar Plunge?

It sounds very interesting but also a little scary!!!

Thanks.

Jenny

Sure, first you go up to the Arctic circle, then you go to the local hardware store and pick up a plunger.next you find a polar bear, introduce yourself and then hit him with it......hope you can run !!

Here I am doing it in the Arctic-

And enjoying a cognac afterwards-

And then in the Antarctic, though from the Orion-

The antarctic plunge was the second.Note how there is no fear. The endorphins really flow.i thoroughly reccomend it.

And as you can see style does not come into it.

It wasn't even offered on our Arctic voyage ... not that we planned to do it ... so a few of the passengers took matters into their own hands and went for a quickie swim when we landed to hike 14th July Glacier. On subsequent cruises, I read that it was offered as described by loujimbabe.

Our Arctic plunge was as described by Drron29. You don't have much time to get very cold...

In Antarctica, we did our plunge at Deception Island. You wear your suit under all of your clothes, then go ashore. You have to undress ashore before you freeze to death, then run into the water and get out deep enough to go under. After you get resuscitated from the shock, once you get back ashore they had a "hot tub" dug out on the beach for you. The island is volcanic so the runoff is heated - and the crew dug out a hole in the sand which fills with hot water. The only problem is eventually you have to drag yourself out of that and dry off fast, then put on your layers for the zodiac ride back to the boad.

I (JP) did both. The Arctic was easier but Deception Island was way cooler (and colder)! Chris has the brains in our family and (wo)manned the camera.:D

Well done - someone has to be the smart one! No matter how much I tried, I couldn't convince her how much fun I was having...

Guess the uncontrollable shivering made it hard to talk!
