Eclipse Review, 12-10 Sailing (LONG)

We were right down the hall as well. Our steward said it was a domestic situation. Apparently one hell of an argument.

We were told there was a fight between a few people on the Lawn Club on the first night. The people involved were "sent to their rooms" with a guard outside until we arrived in San Juan. Then they were removed from the ship. That had to be a very expensive one way flight home.

Hey library lady, I think my wife and I met you the morning we left Miami up on the sunset bar. We were sitting at the bar and my wife ordered a coniac. We are going on the allure of the seas in march w our teenagers, and we just booked a 10 day caribbean cruise in jan of 2013 on the equinox.

Sandi,

Loved your review. Sorry we never got to meet, although your husband looks familiar, maybe I chatted with him at some point. We loved, loved, loved this cruise. Your pictures were great. We booked Eclipse for 2/9/13 while we were on this cruise. Happy New Year!

Ellen

Thanks!

For us, it will likely come down to how much time I DON'T spend in the casino. Sometimes we are in there for an hour or two in the evenings (AKA: Prime drinking hours - not that my goal is to get blasted or anything!). When we are in there, typically they have provided me with complimentary drinks. Usually with dinner, we'll enjoy a nice bottle of wine or Champagne - and most of what we usually like is listed in their bottles section, rather than the "by the glass" list.

So... still... decisions, decisions!

Tom

Hi Tom - my husband also spends a lot of time in the casino and only a few times ever did we get a free drink (he had to ask) and he throws a lot of two way bets for the dealers as well. Did you specifically ask? Any tips would be greatly appreciated! :)

Well -- the last Celebrity cruise we were on (Solstice May 2010) was a "Blue Chip Club" sailing (perhaps 100+ invited casino guests) and they placed stickers on our shipboard card which gave us N/C drinks in the casino. Prior to that Celebrity sailing, most of the time, they were probably covering 75% of our drinks without asking - though I was often playing $100+ per hand, so my guess is that the play level had a lot to do with it.

Many times it comes down to the host and manager who are onboard. Some are very generous, others almost act like they are personally paying for the drink if they give you any! So.. who knows!!

Congrats on the car Lois. When I got my Mini last year (present from wonderful DH), I made them put a bow on it even though it was New Year's Eve!!

loving the review! thank you so much. Makes me in slightly less of a hurry to get onboard!!:D I am in full planning mode, just can't wait!

I had to comment on this post, as I two am a Mini owner. Just love my Mini. DH enjoyed mine so much he traded in his Audi A6 4.2 liter for a very nice CWJ with oxblood red leather. I'm a little jealous! :p

Thanks again for the great review!:)

Its my 2,500 th post on CC. Guess I spend a lot of time on here!

I just wanted to wish everyone a happy, healthy New Year and thank everyone for your advice, opinions and passion for cruising Celebrity. It has made planning for my travels so much more enjoyable. I've learned a lot and met some really nice folks along the way.

This was by far one of the best picture reviews I have read on these boards! Thank you so much for taking the time to post!

I will be on the Eclipse next year, but it was great to get me excited for our cruise next month!

One question... What kind of camera do you have? It takes great pictures!

Oops - this is what happens when I don't proof read and my fingers get a little confused. I meant a JCW - John Cooper Works. It's a '09 and it's super fast. Mine is just the regular Mini Cooper - "Justa". LOL

Last year we took the Minis to Minis on the Dragon - there were over 300+ Minis there. It's a great road (318 curves in 11 miles)and a good time. :p

Thanks so much. DH is the photographer, he has a Panasonic Lumix digital camera. Most of the food pics I took with my iPhone 4s. I should have a link to the full album up soon, still adding descriptions.....

I very seldom spend more than a few minutes reviewing CC threads pertaining to cruises I have booked. A week from today, we are sailing on Eclipse and I have spent the whole morning enjoying your comments. Since we are in AQ and looking forward to BLU (after losing 40 pounds myself) needless to say that your posts transported me to a "back to the future" sense. Thank you very much for your very unselfish insights!

p.s. I retired from professional photography several years ago (large format film) and have gone through several digital cameras by now. However, most of my pictures are taken now with my iPhone 4s and I am delighted with them!

I opted not to attend the Galley Tour held that morning as I had been on the tour on Summit and didn’t think it would be that much different (it was free of charge).

We returned to our cabin to find an invitation to the Hands-on Cooking Class and Lunch with Chef Dena Marino in Murano at 12:30 p.m. (I had signed up for lunch in Murano on Saturday, not knowing about this program at the time, but was fortunate to be one of the first on the list for this very popular event!). It was definitely a unique experience and one of the highlights of our cruise.

15 guests gathered in Murano and were given chef’s aprons and toques to wear.

We enjoyed a glass of sparkling wine while Tony, the Maitre D’ of Murano introduced Chef Marino who explained what we would be doing in the kitchen. We were brought into the Murano galley where we prepared lunch under Chef Marino’s patient, expert guidance.

It was a lot of fun, even though it was quite hot in the galley! I made fresh mozzarella balls and Scott helped stuff trout, which he helped to grill under the watchful eye of one of the Murano chefs.

Another group of students made pesto. We all participated in the plating and serving of the dishes (accompanied by Chef Marino yelling at us to pick up the pace – just like in a real kitchen).

We then gathered in the Murano dining room, to enjoy the fruits of our labor, along with our choice of red or white wine.

Thanks for sharing this. We chatted with "Bunky" and her husband in Qsine also and I wondered what happened to their research. This brings back good memories!!

Your review, LibraryLady, is fantastic. I've read it a couple of times as my excitement mounts about our April sailing on Eclipse. That's one of the best things about cruising, isn't it - the building anticipation!

A question: WHile DH and I have been to Trunk Bay a couple of times over the year, I am debating going to Trunk Bay on St. John's on our own in April... but I see the ship offers an excursion there as well. A possible advantage of going on our own is that we get over there earlier and have a bit more peaceful quiet time before the ship tour arrives. But maybe that's not really an issue. Did you notice the beach growing more crowded when the excursion arrived?? Did that diminish your enjoyment of Trunk Bay somewhat?

Thanks for your thoughts.

Hi Maggie,

Glad you enjoyed the review. We managed to get the early ferry to St. John and were there fairly early and there were only a handful if people on the beach. We left around noon and there were definitely more people at that time but it wasn't really crowded. It would also depend on how many ships are in port at St. Thomas. There were only a couple of other ships the day we were there. So crowds weren't an issue.

thank you so much for this wonderful review-we are sailing on Eclipse in two weeks from today-going back to Celebrity after being away from them for 8 years-this review has really helped me get acquainted with the ship and what it has to offer-we are truly excited to be sailing on such a beautiful vessel.

when you were on this cruise, we were on Grand Princess (for the 3rd time)-isn't it a wonderful time to cruise - just before Christmas? We used to live in Chicago and truly appreciate living now in Florida where it is so easy to cruise - again thanks for so much great information!!!

Thanks, Sandi! Your review is excellent, and I love all the pictures! I really appreciate the time you have taken to post this in depth travelogue! I also appreciate all the info you have compiled regarding staterooms, even though ours is not listed yet!:( I will check back on that sticky again before we sail. I'm really hoping our bed is by the closet, not the veranda.
