late sleepers who think the world owes them a chair

Rosa Parks must be rolling over in her grave...really? I don't think I want to cruise on any "segregated" ships...just...wow. How do you propose this works out in the event of an emergency? Does the upper class get off first??? Indeed.

I agree. The Titanic this ain't!!! The lounge chairs in public areas are for ALL the passengers! If you want reserved private chairs, spring for a balcony and sit out there all day.

sorry but i see it differently. if i want to spend 30 minutes with my children in the pool I expect my seat to be there when i get back. If i get up and take the kids to grab a burger and come back to my seats to eat i want my stuff left alone.

I do not believe in marking my spot at 630 in the morning but if i do get a good when i come down i down want late sleeping grandma holding a stop watch to my seats every time i get up either

Well put!

OK here it is. I'm getting sick of all the Chair Hog threads and want to start one that gives the other side of the story.

It's about people who legitimately get a chair on the deck by the pool, actually use the chairs, but have one of the chairs taken over by people who get up late, see a chair that has been vacated for a few minutes and try to just sit down and use it.

I have had people try to take my DW's chair when she got up for a few mintutes to go to the bathroom (but I was still in my chair beside her). It was like fighting off a pack of wolves. I really don't think people really wait 30 minutes. They get up at noon, and use their arrogance to snag an open chair near the pool even if it's only been vacated for only a few minutes. It's happened more times than I care to mention.

Let me clarify that we never sit in the Serenity area.

Happened to you?

I could not agree more!!!

Well put!

I left my seats for 34 minutes on the Sensation, when we returned the seats were gone. I actually took a picture just before leaving. Now I knew it was 34 minutes, but would someone else really have watched the seat and taken it over 4 minutes?

Lucky for me, and the people that took them there were other seats around. But I definitely had something to say. If I ever did come back within the 30 minutes, and the seats were taken I would be very angry. My solution is to get the occupants of my chair a nice cold beverage, and if I so happen to trip and spill. Oppss... (kind of like some of the people who remove the belongings on the seat thinking they maybe "lost") Just call me Naive

I agree with a point made about swimming - I honestly wish we had some cubbies for shoes, towels and sunglasses etc. I am happy sitting on the edge of the pool watching my kids - but there is no easy solution as to where to keep our stuff dry....

Suggestions welcome!

yup! I see you did start the thread!!! LOL!

I just posted my story on the billionth chair hog thread about the time that I left my DD to watch the chairs and some bully came and took our chairs even though my DD told him that I was coming back! She was all of 5' tall and 85 pounds soaking wet so she was an easy mark. She had no choice but to come and find me and DS. I didnt go back because I am not into confrontation on vacation and didnt want to have to kick someone a$$ in front of my kids! LOL!

Are there chair hogs? Yes, most definitely. Are there chair bullies who steal your chair when you leave for a few minutes? Yes, most definitely. Turns out that rude is rude no matter which side of the fence you live on!

And for the record, DH and I dont even attempt the serenity area and this time that I am talking about above wasnt even near the main pool!

People who are morning people need to realize that not everyone is a morning person. I am very much a night person. Unfortunately, our world tends to completely cater to morning people, at the expense of night people. Getting up in the morning for work is a struggle for me. It seems very biased that I get in trouble for arriving to work 5 minutes late, no matter how late I stayed the previous night, while the morning person who can't make it to 5:00 is allowed to leave early with no penalty. Also, businesses, such as auto mechanics, if they are open at all on weekends (usually just Saturdays) tend to open very early to accommodate morning people, but are not open past noon, denying night people our only chance of the week to actually sleep. Even in New York City, the supposed "city that never sleeps", museuems and other attractions open at the crack of dawn, but (even on weekends) close at 5 PM or even earlier.

Given how much the world favors morning people, and given how difficult it is for us in our every day life to adapt to a morning person's schedule, us night people want to at least be able to enjoy our vacation! There is no reason why morning people deserve a monopoly on the deck chairs. Given how us night people live in your morning people world for 51 weeks a year, let us at least enjoy our one wek vacation.

Did rosa parks pay for upgraded seating? The suite, concierge service? NOT?

Why so many complaints from passengers about noise from the club, casino, etc? Don't hear us night people complaining?? Oh wait turn everything off parents are in bed.

Oh wait you dictate when everyone should go to sleep and wake up??? Sorry your honor. How do I do that when I have customers all over the world? It's ain't Mayberry anymore pops....some of us work in the world economy. Next time you have a 3am conference call for 3 hours let me know.

I don't steal chairs if I leave for 15 minutes but to swim I would never leave my stuff on a chair. Honestly, I have no urge to jump in a pee pool anyway. Never would hog one period it's rude.

Been paying at resorts for years for a chair guarantee. Just paid 400 at the Cosmo for a daybed for the day.

How is that relevant? Why should she have had to pay for upgraded seating? She paid the same fare as everyone else, and deserved the same seating consideration as anyone else. Likewise, night people deserve the same consideration as morning people.

Why so many complaints from passengers about noise from the club, casino, etc? Don't hear us night people complaining?? Oh wait turn everything off parents are in bed.

But the difference is that nobody is forced to book a room that is above or below the club or casino. If you plan to go to bed early, then don't book a room near the club or casino, and don't book a Guarantee. Keep in mind that even as a night person, I avod rooms by the club and casino, because there will likely be at least one passenger who stays there later than me.

Oh wait you dictate when everyone should go to sleep and wake up???

The night people who want access to deck chairs are not dictating when people should go to sleep and wake up. If anything, it is the morning people who are saying that you don't deserve a deck chair if you don't get up early. And it is the morning people who are, unfortunately, ruling corporate America that are forcing their employees to get up too early, even though they'd work far more efficiently if they were allowed to sleep later.

Sorry your honor. How do I do that when I have customers all over the world? It's ain't Mayberry anymore pops....some of us work in the world economy. Next time you have a 3am conference call for 3 hours let me know.

Not relevant.

Not everyone can afford $400 just to sit in a deck chair.

Sorry I just find the rosa parks comment far out of place and racist.

Also there are morning people and night ones. Neither is right or obligated to break the rules and not have common courtesy towards fellow guest. It's all about having a great vacation.

Totally agree. I don't have kids, but If I take a chair it's b/c I plan on swimming, and want to have a place to sit to dry off. In other places, pool chairs are meant for those using the pool. I wear glasses, and like to know that there's a place where I can leave my glasses, and towel. I may read a book for twenty minutes while sitting after I swim. Am I committing a faux-pas by taking a chair while I swim?

My point is that if chairs were used ONLY for backsides, a chair would be available for folks who actually want to sit in them. You wouldn't have to worry about having a chair for your backside if folks didn't park their towels on them!

I think you're exactly right. People should grab a bite and go to the bathroom before they find a chair....so they can enjoy it for a good long while. Then when they get hungry....or mother nature calls.....give up the seat....let someone else enjoy it. If everyone did this then there would be seats available a lot more often. No buns in the seat.....its vacant. :)

I think mentioning Ms. Parks in any situation where segregation is suggested is relevant, and that's exactly what's being suggested to an extent. Learn from history or repeat it, it applies to lots of things. Sorry you don't agree.

I second this idea!!! 8/10 times we're looking for a lounger it's to put our things on and take a dip in the pool. Just a cubbie to put my towel and shoes would be awesome! I would happily go to lesser populated areas to sun as the pool is not a priority for me personally.

And yes, DBF and I put both our things on one lounger, don't leave them over the time limit unoccupied, and take turns if we have to use the restroom, get a snack...etc... ;)

Sorry, but I see a huge difference between benefits based on the color of ones skin... And benefits that are potentially paid for. Are you plopping your self into a first class seat on an airplane and claiming the rosa parks treatment? The other person is right, this comment was way out of line and inappropriate.

Actually my comment was fueled by a post stating we should return to a system as was present on the Titanic, which, as you may know, was *highly* racist/classist. I want nothing to do with a ship that wants to lock some of us in steerage and feeds the rest from silver platters. It's a silly notion, and among other things would destroy Carnival's revenue system.

It all boiled down to common courtesy, there is no need for elaborate shifts in payment or treatment of passengers to solve such petty issues. We all just have to be civil and human to one another, and I think Rosa would think the same.

Guess we'll agree to disagree, eh? *shrug*

A few years ago we cruised in mid summer~very HOT~we parked ourselves in one corner of the Lido pool and stayed for 6 hours~we had 2 chairs and we were back and forth in them, we had people try to move our stuff on 2 occasions but we were in the pool and watching so I would tell them they were taken, one of them told us we didn't own that corner  I am NOT a chair hog but if I am fortunate enough to get a chair I will use it as long as I need it. I will take my stuff if both of us leave but as long as we are back and forth~pool breaks, food breaks, bathroom breaks~I will keep them both! To me a chair hog is someone who "reserves" several chairs and doesn't use them, not someone who uses the chair all day even if they do not actually sit in it but go back and forth all day!

Actually, the system on the Titanic was more (reverse) sexist than racist or classist. Remember, "women and children first". Even when there were vacant spaces in the lifeboats, they refused to allow men to enter them. I have even read that they shot men who tried to enter lifeboats.

True, but still the wealthy went first, and it was a sign of the times that there was such process and due regard for the women and children. Not saying that's a lost art, or a bad thing, but it was very much a high societal point of action - gentlemanly honor and all.

Also at the time it would be the custom to keep racial/other minorities in steerage regardless of what they paid. That's what I mean. I imagine all sorts of panicked sordid happenings occurred once everyone realized how screwed they were.

Erm, we've totally hijacked the thread, huh?

Just off the Pride today, and let me tell you, the chair hogs were out in FULL force. Got up at 6:00AM each day....got a carafe of coffee via room service to watch the sun rise on my balcony. Got the family up for breakfast on the Lido by 7:30 and done by 8. Out to the Lido to get a chair....and FORGET ABOUT IT!!!! They were all "taken". And by taken, I mean, a book, a flip flop, a towel, etc, and the chair folded down. Mind you, it was 8:00 in the MORNING!!!! Just frustrating. I didn't have the balls to take peoples stuff and put it on the ground or bring it to the " pool police ", but it really pissed me off!!! They probably got up at 6, went back to bed, and came out at noon. ANNOYING!!!!!

Are these people actually like wolves fighting for a chair, or do they just ask if anyone is sitting in the chair? Just because they are arriving at the pool late does not mean they slept until noon. If I leave the pool to go play trivia or workout or anything else that is more than a few minutes, I give up my chair and look for a new chair when I return to the pool. If everyone only left their things on a chair when they were actually using the chair, this would not be an issue. There would be plently of chairs and you would know not to ask about a chair with a towel on it.

But here lies the problem. I am sitting there and there's one chair beside me (my DW chair that has her towel and book on it while she goes to the bathroom), and people still have the nerve to continuously ask if they can have her chair (and not politely). And it's one after the other asking.

These late sleepers cruise the deck trying to bully enough people until they get what they want.

Well, based on the Costa Concordia footage, THAT idea has gone out the window! Now its "Captain and his girlfriend first!" Ok, now everyone else.....carry on....LOL!

With my luck, a fight would ensue if I did this!!

One of my gifts from Cheryl over Christmas was a small pack of business cards. The only two words on them are:

Nice Parking

Well, I FINALLY got up the nerve to place one on a vehicle last weekend (looked around to make sure nobody was watching). This was at the complex where my office is (as I said, weekend - so not in full use). Someone had literally parked at an angle and intentionally took two full spots.

Withing 90 seconds, there was a knock on our door (locked for the weekend) and upon opening it a fellow thrust forward the card I had put on his windshield and said he did not appreciate that "attitude". (WOW)!! Turns out he is a tax attorney on a higher floor (3 story building) and saw me put it there. His story was that, due to weekend parking in the area for tourists and such, oftentimes there are no places left if a client of his comes in to see him. The client knows to call him, and he will come and free up the space.

So... there you go, my FIRST try and I was shot down in flames...

Tom

I knew a guy who used to park like that. His wife worked in the same building but came to work later than he did so he would park across two spots to save her one for when she arrived

Tip a deck attendant to clear an unoccupied chaise for you. They know which ones have been sitting vacant.
