Has smoking policy changed on Carnival since September 2011?

I don't think many are advocating totally non-smoking ships.

You are correct.

No ship is completely non-smoking. There will always be somewhere onboard for people to smoke.

The cruise lines are not subject to any US or state smoking laws.

They can make as much or as little of the ship smoking as they want.

If they can make money from having more smoking areas they would.

Why not? They are in the business of making money.

The problem is in 2012 there are just not many smokers.

So the cruise lines are adjusting the smoking areas.

Seems pretty simple to understand.

Perhaps you should review the comparative smoking stats.

Lets ignore your previous post talking about someones color . lets take this one.1) The decible won't affect you with earplugs(cost 1 dollar),2) The smoke stacks have been proven to not be harmful to passengers,3)83% of scientist have proven the ozone is not depleting by fossil fuel and ruing the atmospheres( only about 10% actually believe in that and global warming-the wackos),Alcohol affects the person who is drinking it, whereas cig smoke (2nd hand) has been proven to harm others around you, I have yet to have my liver affected by a guy drinking next to me. Smokers think they own the outside and can ruin your fresh air whenever they feel like it. Smokers complain about everything if they don't get their way, quit whining, you don't own the outdoors, non-smokers have a right to fresh non toxic air.;)

Repo cruiser, apparently someone has repoed your brain??? Where in the heck do you see one reference to me talking about someones color? You must be one of those nutty buddys who look for that at every turn? Sorry to disappoint you but Im not going to let you play that card.. It has no place here.. and some further reading for you!! A study from a liberal bastion no less, The University of California Riverside.

Close down all grills on ALL cruise ships forever.. quickly my fellow villagers!!, Grab your torches and pitchforks and let us end this infernal, diabolical grilling of burgers that is killing us!!

Stop playing the "know it all" game. You have noticed where the smoking areas are (oh, yes, you know), they are in the money maker areas including Lido, casino, balconies.

Your rates may increase due to revenue losses if these areas are gone. Someone has to pay the price, and it will be the non smokers who get their wish.

As long as Carnival keeps it's current policies, I'll sail. But when the day comes and smoking on a ship is banned, or I travel half a mile to a smoking area...I and others will not sail again. We'll find alternatives. A smoker does not subject himself to a smoking banned cruise vacation.

Now, what's your next sarcastic remark? Yes, you read right...sarcastic remark.

So by your logic all smokers have more non-discretionary income then non-smokers to spend on cruise ships?

I do not see how because smoking is a nasty, wasteful, costly, unhealthy, self-destructive habit that costs a lots of money while doing it and also for additional medical costs later in life.

I would say non-smokers have way more discretionary income then smokers who tend to pay ridiculous amounts of money to huff and puff smoke in the air.

The cruise lines will do just fine economically if not better without letting smokers smoke on balconies and limiting them to very confined smoking areas on the ships. :D

And the problem with this is...........There will be more non-smoking cruisers who do not like the excessive smoking now to replace everyone who decides to stop cruising.

We heard the same foolish arguments when all our restaurants were forced to go smoke free. It did not affect sales at all.

Smokers will hate to hear this, but the more income and education a person has the less likely they will smoke.

That may be why the more expensive lines and hotels tend to have the more restrictive smoking policies.

Hope you have your armour on! :D

But it makes sense looking at this chart. I'd bet the Carnival CORPORATION would rather have the customers earning over 100k going to their higher end lines. I'd bet HAL and Princess and other have much much higher gross profit per traveler than Carnival line does. So it only stands to reason that the Carnival ships have the most lenient smoking policies....for now.

It will be interesting to see this same chart 5 and 10 years from now.

I book a balcony specifically to smoke on it. I don't smoke in non smoking areas, but as long as they allow smoking on balconies, I will smoke there. And if my neighbor nicely asks me not to smoke while they are out there, I will stop, but if they are rude, I'll sit out there 24/7 and chain smoke!

Smoking is legal!! It's stupid to compare smokers to drug addicts!! We are not doing anything illegal

A small correction.

Where you smoke is at the pleasure of the line you cruise with.

It has nothing to do with being legal in the US.

Of course you can be addicted to a legal drug (Nicotine).

Why are people stupid for not being addicted to Nicotine?

You're right, but like I said, I only smoke where it is allowed.

I never said anyone was stupid.

I sailed in July on the Freedom and I do appreciate the fact that smoke does not enter my cabin from another's room and I appreciate the halls being smoke free.

I truly do not understand why the ship cannot sail with one side balconies non smoking and the other balcony side smoking. To me that might please most people (Not all cuz there's no pleasing some) Halls and rooms would still be non smoking so no drifting smoke so there couldn't be complaints there.........but one side of the balconies could be non smoking and the other side smoking.

If the side you want is full..(smoking balcony or non smoking balconies) then you have to decide if you want to put up with smoking beside you or going up to the smoking area to smoke or choosing another date or ship.

I think both sides could be accomodated with this solution. Many people love Carnival...so choosing another line doesn't sound appealing. It could be a win-win situation!

The trouble is no where near half of the population smokes..... throw in the mathematics of couple where one non-smoker pairs up with a smoker and it would get too confusing. I suspect few non smokers would book on a smoking side -- we sure wouldn't

It would be nice is there were a simple solution, if there was the cruise lines would be all over it.

The easy solution in my eyes would be to encourage smoking passengers to use e-Cigs. Sell them in the store, allow the use of them anywhere except possibly the MDR and educate both smokers and non-smokers about them.

I've been using them for 15 months and really don't miss real cigarettes (after 40 years). I also think smokers, in their heart of hearts, want to quit but don't want to go through the withdrawals. Well, you don't have to...the liquid I use has 4 ingredients...nicotine, water, flavoring and vegetable glycerin. US sourced and made. A real cigarette has 40 thousand (I believe or might be 4,000) chemicals. No smoke, no smell, nothing second-hand (unless you find water unhealthy). Side benefit...safety. You don't have to worry about a drunk falling asleep with a lit cigarette.

I have no doubt some of the more extreme non-smokers will claim they smell smoke and start the coughing thing. Unless I'm "vaping" my German Chocolate cake liquid they won't smell a thing.

Reading comprehension is a wonderful thing. The poster stated comparing smokers to drug addicts is stupid and I happen to agree.

So when people try to quit, they don't really go through withdrawals? As they say...just asking

Are you seriously this dense? I just read through all nine mind numbing pages of your "holier than thou" posts and have to respond at some point. Nicotine is a drug, and like many other drugs it has numerous side effects. One of the side effects of nicotine are withdrawals if one is not able to consume the drug. Asked: Answered.

Now onto the more relevant portion...what does this have to do with someone smoking on their balcony? Particularly if the smoking is within the rules of the cruiseline? Take you're beef up with Carnival, it's becoming quite tired on the board.

I would like to know what brand you have and how expensive it is. Is there a web site for the kind you have? I was seriously considering using my next cruise as a launching pad to quit.

I have to say the hate on threads like this is just sad. I understand both sides very well and I wish people would just stop being so cruel to each other.

Non-smokers, you get more flies with honey than you do with vinegar. If you want a smoker to stop smoking in a designated smoking area, (their balcony) be polite about it and say something, or send a note. Keep in mind they ARE following the rules. If I am still smoking when I go I would be more than willing to have designated times to smoke on my balcony even though I don't have to.

Smokers, if your next balcony neighbor wants to make noise and be childish, it might be up to you to say something to them, nicely. I know their behavior can be irritating and make you feel defensive, but if something isn't worked out, everyone's cruise with be marred. The stress this can cause takes away the benefit of a vacation.

For anyone taking the polls..:)..I don't drink much, but when I do, I like to smoke. Same with gambling. I don't gamble in my own state, I go next door to WV, because I can smoke there. Also, I still tip the same (20-25%-entirely dependent on the wait staffs attitude and performance) as I did before smoking was banned in Ohio restaurants, and it doesn't bother me whatsoever. I like eating in a smoke free environment and I also like sleeping in a smoke free environment.

Can everyone please kiss and make up now? :o
