Navigating the Port of New York

Drove by there this past Saturday and saw the QMII -- everything else was blocked out by her massiveness, including the John F. Kennedy which was in port. West Side Highway was clear down to about 60th Street, where the backups began. Lots of traffic lights there, but things weren't moving at all -- we got off at 56th street or so, but the road was packed as far as we could see. This was around 11:30AM or so.

We live in Jersey also. It's better if you arrange pickup ahead of time w. a car service. They have to circle around but can reach you when you get out of the terminal especially if you call them on a cell phone after baggage pickup.

Saturday was part of Fleet Week and my son said he drove over from Brooklyn in record time, but traffic built up heavily south and north of the Intrepid.

However, unless it's 2 Am on a Wednesday on a slow traffic day, with no accidents or police investigations, chances are, you will hit traffic ;).

Here's a pic of the parking at the pier, taken from the NCL Dawn. The parking lot is above where you check in, so you just take an elevator down to the passenger terminal.

When we took the Dawn cruise, folks talked about parking in NJ and taking the ferry across - a lot cheaper option and apparently not too inconvenient. They said you could walk from the ferry terminal to the passenger terminal. Can't find the threads about that - probably too old.

Parking - We parked at Port Imperial in Weehawken, New Jersey and ferried to midtown. Parking was $7.00 for weekend days, $9.00 for weekdays, for a total of $66.00. The ferry is $5.50 per person, per trip. The total was $88.00. This pales in comparison to $198.00 at the pier plus tunnel or bridge fares of $6.00.

When we got off the ferry in midtown (West 38th and 12th) we rolled our baggage up 12th from 38th to 50th (12 short blocks) when the ship was waiting for us. We don't mind walking and are very physically fit, so the 10 minute walk was a breeze. From the ferry pier to the ship and beyond in both directions is a Harbourwalk pathway. This path is paved and completely improved for walking, running, biking, blading, or rolling luggage. We walked to and from the ship.

When we returned to our car it was there without any problems, although we had a dead battery. Joe the security guard came by with a battery booster and got us off and running. Simple and easy.

Derf, not sure this appeals to you but DH and I plan this approach on 9/17 for our Carnival Canada/New England cruise from NYC, though we will likely grab a taxi from the ferry to the passenger port - depends on the weather and how long a walk it seems. Thought you might find it useful.

Click on this link and then select the Ferry button. Then scroll down to see the map with the drop off points. This is the Port Authority Web Site.

I don't think you would want to take the Battery Park drop off unless you wanted to tour there. You would want to take the 38th St Drop off which has 3 departure points in NJ.

You can typically park in Jersey for much less and not have to deal with the tunnels and NYC traffic. If you plan to do some touring in NYC, you can get an all day subway pass for $7. You have to use one of the Metro Card machines in the subway station. It is a touch screen and you have to havigate through a couple of menus. With a little planning, you can use the Subway to see many of the major sites.

Next,

Thanks, just put it in my favorites. We were in N.Y. last year and saw a Ferry to N.J. at Battery Park, and didn't know there were other stops. We got those Metro passes you talked about.

I live with in walking distance of the piers. Another option is to park a bit north of the piers on 11th ave at 60th st. And just hop in a taxi for a couple of dollars. there is a big out door lot over there which is one of the cheapest in the city. Not sure what the rates are right now bit will try and find out.

By the way. Just south of the cruise port in NYC is the Circle Line. If you have they time (3-4 hours) and the weather is nice, the 3 hour circumnaviagation of Manhatten is a great way to get a perspective of the City. The tour is narrated by a guide and you get to hear all kinds of tid-bits about the buildings and bridges as you motor around Manhatten island.
