Izcruise Posted June 3, 2005 #1 Share Posted June 3, 2005 Does anyone know where or what happened to the old PP? I was on QM2 last year and saw her in St. Thomas...It still had "Pacific Princess" on her but also on one side of the ship had Pullmantur?:o
Rare Coral Posted June 3, 2005 #2 Share Posted June 3, 2005 If you do a search on this website - you will find out where old ships are: http://www.simplonpc.co.uk/ I can't link directly to the info. The ship has been renamed "Pacific" but if you click on Princess you can follow the links to where each retired ship is.
sunprincess Posted June 3, 2005 #3 Share Posted June 3, 2005 You are correct. The Pacific Princess was sold to the Spanish operator named Pullmantur. I MISS the Love Boat ;)
Druke I Posted June 3, 2005 #4 Share Posted June 3, 2005 And her sister, the Island Princess, is now sailing for I believe Discovery Cruises. Sailed three times on the old Pacific Princess - lovely ship.
sailinglisa Posted June 3, 2005 #5 Share Posted June 3, 2005 She is now the "Pacific" and cruises for Pullmantour out of Spain.
Lolipop Posted June 3, 2005 #6 Share Posted June 3, 2005 The original Loveboats Island Princess and Pacific Princess were wonderful ships and I was sorry to see them go. There was always something magic about the smaller vessels, a much more personal atmosphere I think:)
dorisday Posted June 3, 2005 #7 Share Posted June 3, 2005 lolipop, I totally agree with you. the original Island & Pacific were lovely ships they had a very intimate atmosphere onboard. Getting to know fellow passengers was easier & the crew always said how much more they enjoyed working onboard the smaller ships in the fleet. The new mega-ships are beautiful too but I will always prefer the smaller ships. I was very sorry to see them sold as I'd had many a happy cruise on both. :)
cruisingbug Posted June 3, 2005 #8 Share Posted June 3, 2005 Wax nostalgic all you like - but the Pacific Princess gym was a cramped room off to the side with no windows and hardly any equipment...buffet took up a good part of the Lido deck, and was COLD some mornings...pool was tiny...dance troupe had to do double duty as bingo/karaoke/etc. hosts...and our oceanview cabin had two twin beds set perpendicular to each other - no double bed on the LOVE BOAT for our anniversary- we had to pull the mattresses off and sleep on the floor!!! GottoCruise Posted June 3, 2005 #9 Share Posted June 3, 2005 BUT - If you went up to the Mini-suite category the cabins were OK........ I still like the intimate atmosphere of the small ships... You could dock close to the cities with no problem .... no "hordes" for tour embarkation --- SIGH! - for the good old days!!! :) Renee
cruisingbug Posted June 3, 2005 #10 Share Posted June 3, 2005 Actually, we met a couple who was honeymooning, they were in a suite, had a butler, queen bed, petit fours in the afternoon, the works BUT their cabin window was off the promenade rather than open water, so not much privacy for honeymooners to enjoy!!! derf5585 Posted June 3, 2005 #11 Share Posted June 3, 2005 If you saw the TV series were you disappointed if the size of the room? The layout of the beds was not conducive to love, maybe like
Druke I Posted June 3, 2005 #12 Share Posted June 3, 2005 derf Won't walk the two feet? Many ships of that generation had that style bed configuration. I remember when in the movies everyone slept in twin beds - doubles were not allowed to be shown, part of the Hayes Act, or whatever it was called. derf5585 Posted June 3, 2005 #13 Share Posted June 3, 2005 I remember when in the movies everyone slept in twin beds - doubles were not allowed to be shown, part of the Hayes Act, or whatever it was called. The early TV sitcom Mary Kay and Johnny was the first television series to portray a married couple who slept in the same bed. from http://www.snopes.com/radiotv/tv/marykay.htm Film from 1930-1934, before the Hayes Censorship Act from http://www.theconnection.org/shows/2000/03/20000314_b_main.asp
bjboothman Posted June 3, 2005 #14 Share Posted June 3, 2005 The Pacific Princess was our first cruise ever, in 2002, to celebrate our first anniversary. Yes we had the perpendicular bed arrangements (truly nonconverting twins) but we didn't let it spoil the romance - just one more thing to laugh about in years to follow. The experience couldn't have been all bad - by the end of 2005 we will have completed our 7th cruise (6 on Princess) - like the rest of you, we've been bitten by the cruise bug. My biggest complaint about the PP would be the size of the casino. In November of 2003 we saw the PP docked in San Juan as we were leaving for a cruise. Ethel5 Posted June 4, 2005 #15 Share Posted June 4, 2005 We were docked next to the original Pacific Princess when in St. Lucia last November. She's still a pretty ship - but small!!!! The name Pacific Princess was still visible as an indentaion along the hull.
