Onboard Gratuities

 

How can I pay tips?For the convenience of guests, pre-paid tips may be arranged online or added to your booking by your travel agent or Personal Cruise Specialist, before your sailing date. If you have opted not to pre-pay your Service Charge before your cruise, then for all sailings that commence after 1st March 2013, for your convenience we will automatically add a $12.00 per guest per day* service charge to each guest's SeaPass account on a daily basis. * For Grand Suites and above the daily charge will be $14.25c. Alternatively, you may pay in cash at the end of your cruise directly to the crew members you wish to recognise for their service (If you require an envelope for the crew member concerned, please see the Guest Relations Desk).

Please note, we no longer provide the pre-paid gratuity vouchers at the end of the cruise.

 

Please note gratuities are discretionary so in the unlikely event that a guest on board being charged the daily automatic gratuity does not receive satisfactory service, our guests may request to modify (increase, decrease or remove) the daily amount by visiting Guest Services during their cruise.

I'm late to the party as usual.

 

Can someone explain to me whether or not you can pre-pay now to avoid the upcharge. This is for a cruise the beginning of year 2014?

 

If so can I do it online myself or must my travel agent do it?

yes not sure you can online if you have booked using a ta then I think they have to do it for you but as I have already said you can still pay the old fashioned way if you wish

I understand the concept of people rotating positions, it's not that complicated. My point is, I like to tip the person taking care of me, face to face with cash. I don't like to throw my money in a pot and hope the dude cleaning my room will get some of it. By them doing this they are taking all the guess work out and saying "give us the money, we'll do it for you" - that's fine as long as they actually are paying these people correctly. Maybe I'll change my opinion once we take off in October and see this plan in action, not sure.

 

Have you worked a customer service job? Dealing with impossible people sucks. At first it won't be too bad but once these workers see that they can get away with being rude, lazy, and not always on top of their game because they are getting paid anyway you will notice a decline in service - it's inevitable.

 

I do my job at work, I do what needs to be done and take care of my business. I'm never compensated above my salary for doing 'outstanding work' - it's just not how the company I work for does business. The stock offerings, retirement plans, and health coverage are all dependent on everyone doing a "good job" so the company profits and we all benefit. So I'd say that's my motivation to do a good job so that one day I can retire.

We have done pre-paid tips for several years on Celebrity and RCI and seen no decline in service, it is certainly not inevitable.:(

The moral of this story is to read the ENGLISH small print first ,before getting on your moral high horse :eek:[oh my god i mentioned HORSE we cant get away from this subject in the UK..]:rolleyes::D

guarantee salary and tips, the company pays witch ever is greater. if the crew member gets more tips than salary they are given the tips, and no salary. i also read that tips are added to commpensate the guaranteed salary. no matter, i will take off the tips, and give cash the same way i have for the last 25 years/ when you go into a restaurant do you go into the kitchen and tip the staff there ??? a TIP is something you give for service rendered. i get a haircut i tip, i take a cab i tip, i go to a restaurant i tip my server. i go to a hotel in mexico, i tip the housekeeper i have had for the week. i don't ask the hotel to put it on my bill every day. this is just my opinion

You aren't tipping the kitchen staff on RCI either. Tips haven't changed how they are being distributed, just how they are collected. Most cruise lines have been doing this for years.

 

Eventually it will become a true service charge and there will be no removing it.

 

Oh and as for the comments about Carnival by another poster, I bet the staff onboard that ship has been working their tail off and will lose tips for the next 12 cruises that were cancelled. I sincerely hope people are not punishing the staff for corporate's misdeeds.

We have been paying our tips pre-cruise for about 3 years now and have never had a lack in service. It has always been top shelf. I really want to have as much of the cruise paid off before I get on the ship.

 

I also don't think there has been a time we haven't tipped extra.

 

I find the new policy just fine.

i frankly do not care. If folks want to parse words, fine, but it is simply part of the cost of cruising. Never stiffed, never will, find so many of the "excuses" are hollow and merely folks trying to justify the fact that they are either cheap or should have booked for one month later so they could save up the tip money and not stiff the staff.

There's no need to worry about a decline in service. A bad report from a passenger is more consequential than being "stiffed." It's no different than your job - you must maintain a certain level of competency to get paid.

 

Any waiter, steward, etc. who is rude and lazy will either be fired or relegated to the rowing area.

Seems to me the only people who would object are those inclined to stiff the staff to save a few bucks. Perhaps the new policy will make it more difficult or uncomfortable to remove the tips. Staff works too hard and I support any policy that make 100% tipping more likely.

Maybe in the future they will require us to buy their cruisecare (Trip Insurance) and take away further options.
