Non smoker on balcony any ideas

Hello all, as a non smoker, smoke really bothers me,this is not a complaint, and I would never ask a smoker to not smoke, they should enjoy their balcony as much as I do.

I have a balcony booked on the breakaway toward the back of the ship. I have booked balconies before, and have been bothered by others smoking, again not a complaint but fact, I read some where that a small fan can help if by chance my neighbors are smokers. Has anyone tried this? And if so where do you buy such a small but effective portable fan.

I have never had a problem in a corner, aft-facing balcony. I have had many problems on regular balconies with smoke coming into my room. Maybe you can try an aft-facing cabin?

I'm a non-smoker and my husband is a smoker. Here's a suggestion. He will be out on our balcony smoking about once an hour for about 5 minutes. If his smoke is drifting towards you, you might ask him to let you know when he's done, so that you both can enjoy the balcony. Believe me he'd like to quit. He's tried but has been unsuccessful, resulting in increased blood pressure and anxiety attacks when he's not smoking.

Regarding the portable fan. I bought one last year from Amazon. Unfortunately, I don't have a link. I hope that you end up not being near a smoker. You seem to be a very tolerant person.

On our last cruise, we had an aft facing balcony so it wasn't a problem. For this cruise, I moved our room to the front of the ship, so that we're the most forward cabin. I think that should make it okay. A small battery operated fan would also work, but I wouldn't be too optimistic if you're very sensitive to cigarette smoke.

Do the cabins in the front of the ship bother you? I have heard people say that if you're in the very front, the smoke doesn't seem to go into the balcony as much.

We've noticed much less smoke when on forward balconies than ones mid-ship and further aft (but not the aft facing ones- never been on one of those). When the ship is moving, the wind doesn't blow the smoke forward!

Certainly . Why not cruise on a line that does not allow balcony smoking, then it certainly would not be an issue at all. Celebrity, Princess, then all could be happy ?

Just a Thought. ;)

What ever you decide, Happy cruising :D

I always take a battery powered fan with me. Got a really good one at K-Mart for $5. Works great and is quite powerful for a battery operated fan. It's about 4 inches square and has 2 speeds and uses two D batteries. I've also seen them in many of the drug store chains, but most of the time they're only available in the warmer months. I actually bought a few of them when I saw them in case one breaks and it's out of season for them.

Good luck.

Wait a minute. Are not all NCL cruises now smoke free? I am booked in a balcony on the Breakaway, and it said it is a smoke free ship, am I right or wrong?

Oh this would be wonderful.

My son suffers from migrains and one trigger is the cigeratte smoke.

We had a problem one year with someone smoking a cigar but have been pretty lucky.

But, I'm writing to ask about the fan. I would pack a fan if it helps and never thought about brining one before. Can you please let me know how it helps? Do you just leave it on the balcony and put it on if a neighbor smokes? We are driving to the port so I don't mind packing a fan LOL

Thanks.

We bought our portable (battery operated) fan at Dick's Sporting Goods Store in the camping section. It has a Low and a High Button and if you ojnly use it while you are on the balcony (an hour here or there) you shouldn't need to replace the batteries too often. Our fan requires "D" batteries (4 of them) and the position of the fan can be adjusted as well. It doesn't take up too much space in the luggage and is quite nice.

We have never had a problem with smokers on the balcony. They have all been quite compassionate and have always asked us if it okay if they smoked, keeping the smoke away from us. I have severe allergies to smoke (stepmother smoked like a chimney while I was growing up) and all 4 of us kids developed sensitivities or allergies to the smoke.

Have a great cruise!

Oh, this is my first time with NCL I thought I read Breakaway was a smoke free ship. But, on further investigation, it looks as though I am wrong. What NCL needs to do is have smoke free balcony rooms, and balconies for smokers on the other side of the ship. How is it fair for a non smoker to have to buy a fan, to make sure their child does not have a reaction from the smoke of others? Does not make sense and I saw someone post, the non smoker should ask when the smoker will be smoking on their balcony? What, the non smoker paid the same price for use of their balcony as well. Why should they have to check with you when they want to use their balcony?

My point was that the smoker has a right to use the balcony as well as the non-smoker. So, if you are out there and the smoker comes out and starts smoking, the easiest thing to do is to say to the smoker "Will you let me know when you are finished smoking?". That nicely let's the smoker know that you are bothered by the smoke. Most smokers that I know would hurry up and finish the cigarette. They know it's a nasty habit and they don't wnat to inconvenience you, yet they have to deal with their addiction.

I've always liked the idea of having one side of the ship's balcony rooms be non-smoking and the other side smoking. Sure some people really want port side over starboard or vice versa but at least people will be able to choose what is most important to them (the side of the ship, or smoking vs. non-smoking). It seems like a nice compromise.

Cigarette smoke actually makes me sick. I often feel like many smokers think that non-smokers are exaggerating when they say how sensitive they are to cigarette smoke but please understand that some people are truly very sensitive (it is an allergy). I respect an individuals right to smoke and I do think that smokers should have places on a ship to smoke but I also should in turn have a right to easy access to clean air. I should be able to avoid it if I want to. You don't have to agree but I personally think having a right to clean and healthy air should trump a right to smoke. Why? Clean air is necessary for good health, smoking and second hand smoke can kill. I'm not saying that I think smoking should not be allowed just that people who don't smoke should have the right to a smoke free balcony as much if not more than those who smoke should have that right. I say 'if not more' because the non-smokers are not asking to do something that is proven to be physically harmful to others. Really, I'd prefer that there were smoking and non-smoking balcony areas so that both groups could be happy.

Sure there are cruise lines that do not allow smoking on balconies(wise from a safety perspective). However, I find it sad to think that people (smokers and/or non-smokers) have to miss out on experiencing specific cruise lines over the smoking/non-smoking regulations.

For me, I booked an inside room as the price difference to go up to a balcony that I might not be able to use was just too much. This is ok with me because I knew the smoking rules before I booked and I accept that I may have to look for alternative routes or leave venues to avoid smoke and I am ok with that. I may wish they would change the rules about smoking on balconies but I will accept and not complain about whatever rules they have.

I was not happy when I smelled cigarette smoke on my balcony with Princess last year because it wasn't allowed. However, if I had a balcony on NCL I might be sad to smell a lot of smoke but I certainly would not be mad because I knew ahead of time that it is allowed and thus personally would have chosen to take the chance.

My husband is a smoker and loves the balcony but was asked to not smoke when a couple to our bottom left was on the balcony. We obliged with no problem, and were the only smoking people around... so I think that worked? So with that my best advice is just ask when a smoker is nearby if they could light up elsewhere or not do it when you're there. Most smokers don't want to be big buttfaces about it.

Why should a smoker have to ask to do anything in their space, whats next, would you mind if I had sex in my room? Where does it end?

It is allowed on NCL balconies, if you want smoke free find another cruise line.

It is called freestyle for a reason

Ok now..what does having sex in your cabin, have to do with anything? Having sex in your cabin is a moot point, as it would not impede anyone else' health like smoke can. Now, I am sure if you actually thought about what I posted instead of replying out of emotion your replies may come across more clear.

I hear the same thing over and over again find another ship. It's just such a silly answer. Why not instead, we consumers complain to these companies about changing things. My suggestion, cruise lines get on board and make some balconies smoke and or smoke free. Bottom line, freestyle or not there is no justification for anyone risking another persons health.

OP, I do hope you have a wonderful cruise, with clean air so there are no health concerns for you, and your family!

Whoa, I thought Freestyle meant eating when you want.

Obviously the people who were asked not to smoke were being considerate of others and polite and it didn't bother them. Sounds like the other people asked nicely and they obliged and smoked when they weren't around.

There are lots of people who are highly allergic to perfumes, just smelling it could bring on an asthma attack. Shall we ask people not to wear perfume? My point, if something is bothering you so much, why not just walk away from it? That's what people who are allergic to perfume have to do. I understand that you cant and shouldn't have to leave your balcony but its only for a few minutes and this way everyone enjoys their balcony for most of the cruise.

I am not a smoker and to tell you the truth, I can count on one hand how many times I smelled smoke from someones balcony and when I did I simply walked inside for a minute. Simple, just a little tolerance..

I really really did not want this to be a debate about smoking.....thus said thanks to all who posted about the fan...that was the intent of the post. I honestly do not feel comfortable asking my neighbor to let me know when they were finished...if I smoked I would be offended and think...when I'm done is done and would feel rushed. Thanks all for the fan idea. I'm going to buy a small one and bring an extension cord.

If you do happen to have a smoker next door, make sure to completely shut your balcony door so that the smoke can't get into your cabin. If your cabin does get a smell like smoke the room steward can take care of it. Hopefully you won't have to use your fan.

I am very sensitive to smoke as well. On our 3 balcony cruises I had 2 aft corner balconies, one with a smoker next door but really wasn't bothered by it, I think due to the cross wind that we had. The other balcony was on Celebrity so no smoking on the balconies, that was nice. I avoid the Casino and other smoking areas.
