Allure March 3, 2013 Review. Not as awesome as I thought, but still better than work

Recommended Posts

Thought of a few more. I loved being on the Sun deck on deck 14. If you want space and peace and quiet, this place is for you. BUT it can get really windy out there! And if it's too windy the staff will tie up the loungers so you can't really use them unless they think it's ok. They also play some IMO no so good music, so if you're particular about tunes, bring ear plugs. They did play a decent mix though, some current pop music (not my flavor) and some classics (Bowie, which I love).

The Solarium is nice, but no where near as quiet as I thought. It's not loud, but it's def not a quiet sanctuary I imagined. It's crowded and people are talking, I don't know what I was thinking! Also on the way back, the waves were very strong, and being that far forward one could easily get sea sick, yes even on this big a ship!

Don't think you don't need sunscreen bc it's cloudy or overcast. The sun this much closer to the equator is SO much stronger! I'm from sunny So CA but still I got burned. I usually don't tan or burn easily but now I've learned my lesson. Also bring more than one can of sun block if it's the spray kind bc they can get jammed. I brought one spf10 and one spf30. Well the 30 one's nozzle got messed up and wouldn't spray! And after getting sun burned the 10 wouldn't have been enough protection! We got burned during St Thomas/St John day and pretty much stayed in the shade the rest of the week.

Enjoying your review so far! I have never been on an Oasis class ship, but am planning my honeymoon on one, so all of these reviews are peaking my interests!!!! Can't wait for more!

Lucky you to be in Ft Lauderdale and so close to the ports! Well I am near the LA ports but those cruises are ehhh. The Oasis class ships are really nice, and not TOO big once you get used to where everything is, however, I will agree with Drama Queen that I wish there were more windows to the ocean at a lot of the venues. Other than being on the Lido deck or Windjammer, I think Viking Crown lounge was really the only lounge type place that had ocean views. I remember last year on the Monarch one of my fave places to have a drink before sunset was the Schooner bar overlooking the ocean. On Allure, nope.

Really loving this review - lots of useful info already, and looking forward to hearing more. We're on the Allure for the equivalent week next year and I've bookmarked your review for when I start planning.

Thanks :)

Ok, so once we got on, we poked around for a bit. Bf asked why the front of the ship looked so warehouse-y and they should have made it more prettier. LOL He didn't realize right away that what he was looking at was the dock!

Anyway, here are some shots from the first day.

Coast guard showing off doing some donuts.

P1060199.JPG

I loved these crystal dresses.

P1060203.jpg

I don't know where everyone is here!

P1060205.jpg

So funny, I did this on my first cruise. We went to look at our dining room table for eight, by the window, and I said " is this the view we'll be looking at all week" not realizing I was looking at part of the port dock!!! And that was BEFORE an adult beverage!

Btw - we were on this sailing too!!! Loving your review and agree with you about Nassau. I'd much rather have more time in St Thomas and St Martin.

I have been home sick with a sore throat and earache since Monday and have done nothing but laundry, sleep and read CC reviews of our sailing. Also, It appears the ship is still rocking for me! Those last couple of days were very rough seas.m this happened to me years ago when we first started cruising. I'm just getting my land legs back today!

I'm sorry to hear you're not feeling well! :( Hope you get better soon. Yeah I was really surprised at how rocky the last few days were, even with us having a low mid ship cabin. We hung out at the Flowrider most the last two days and it was overflowing splashing a lot of the people sitting down in the front of the viewing benches.

We never did hang out in any hot tubs in the Solarium (always too crowded) and by the last few days I couldn't even walk in there. Too much movement and too humid. Made me feel sick really fast in there.

So the next day was a sea day. I was really looking forward to eating breakfast in the MDR, esp the eggs benedict. Well, they weren't as good as I remembered from having them last time on Monarch. I also got the smoked salmon, and good thing I ordered two dishes bc both plates were very small portions. I remembered last time I got the benedict and either the smoked salmon or kippered herring (can't remember) and I was so stuffed that I couldn't finish them.

IMAG1184.jpg

IMAG1185.jpg

The smoked salmon was just fine, and I really liked this kind of lettuce.

Not really much to report from this day. They had finally opened up the Sun Deck this day, so that is where we spent a lot of our time sunbathing that day, but there were a lot of clouds out still. We missed dinner that night in the MDR, we slept through it! So we ended up getting room service. Room service has a limited menu, but really comes in handy, esp if you want hot food and your only other options are either pizza at Sorrentos or cold sandwiches at the Promenade Cafe.

BTW let me add in here, I didn't really care for the pizza at Sorrentos. I've never had authentic NY pizza, and being from CA I guess my tastes are different, but this pizza had a crap load of cheese, barely any sauce and even fewer toppings. However, I did like the semi soft crusts. We ate here two times when it was really late and just wanted to grab something quick, but not one of my fave places to eat. I think during the day you can order a custom pizza but we never did this.

As for Promenade Cafe, their cold sandwiches were just fine if that was what you were in the mood for. I saw many people getting brownies and sweets too, but you know I never got any. There were usually three different sandwiches, two with meat, and one veggie (grilled eggplant). There is a cold version of the kummelweck here too. Not the same though.

Which brings me to the Park Cafe. If you want to grab something that can store in your mini fridge (don't forget to ask you stateroom attendant to empty it for you!) you can get a few of the asian shrimp and noodle salad and keep in the fridge, and you can have a late night snack of shrimp if you want. The shrimp are large, not like those tiny bay shrimp you get in the salad bar in the Park Cafe. You can get some salad dressing for dip if you like, I happen to like 1000 island. :)

Oh duh, so I forgot to tell you about the room service! Ordering through the tv is very simple, and after you put the order in, someone calls you and confirms. Several times I got a woman with a Filipino accent and she has a very soothing voice. Made me want to talk like her too!

Our faves were the steak sandwich, which comes with onion rings on top, and fries on the side. The first time the rings and fries came out perfectly. The times after that they were kind of limp. When they call, they ask how you want it cooked. We always got med rare, and it was usually right on or very close to it. The steak itself was tender and had good flavor. Better than some higher quality "fast food" joints' steak sandwiches here at home. Not too much fat on it, but bc of the soft texture I'm sure had some good marbling to it. It was about 1/2" thick. The sandwich comes with bbq sauce, but I easily got a whole bottle of A1 when I asked for it. There's also a smoked salmon baguette, not bad, a Mediterranean chicken salad (good if you feel like eating a salad), and the Honey stung chicken (I never got this bc I don't care for fried chicken and then dipped in ranch EEK) There's also a burger that you can get with cheese, bacon, onion, tomato, etc. Not bad for late night eating. Don't forget to tip the person who delivers you food! :) We usually gave $2 each time, but if it was later, a bit more. We ordered a few times right before midnight, and were not charged the $3.95 service charge for late night ordering. I guess as long as you get the order in before midnight you are fine, even if they deliver the food after midnight.

Sorry I never got any pics of dinner room service food. As soon as it came we scarfed it down.

We are on the Allure in Sept. I am enjoying your review. I am surprised to read that you had rough Seas and actually felt them. I noticed on the Oasis that it was the first ship I have never felt movement on.

Do you think the rough seas were due to Winter weather or is that just always the norm for Eastern route??

We have only done the Eastern route once and I was seasick on the day down and day home (but....we followed a hurricane on the way down but great weather on the way home)

Great review...thanks! Are there any beaches near the port in Nassau to just relax and swim? Our cruise in Dec will stop there for a day...never been, and don't know what to do! Thanks!

I've never done the beach at nassau but as far as I know, yes there are several beaches there. Junkanoo is one, but I hear mixed reviews on it. In Nassau there are vendors that bug you on the beach. Same as on Orient in St Martin. Did not like that at all.

You can go to Atlantic resort too, but you have to pay money to set foot on their property, unless of course you go to the casino.

What your choices are of doing stuff depends on what times you will be there. Seems like Nassau times are always weird.

We are on the Allure in April, so I am loving all these reviews! Please keep it coming and giving us your honest opinions and advises.

OWD

Yes I am trying to give my honest opinions on things that I quite did not like. Hope I don't come off too negative, but some of the experiences were not very fun. Stay tuned.

I think it was due to a storm up north that was causing the bumps. The Captain (we had Capt Johnny, he was very good) said that was why. But I have read that generally the Eastern route is rougher than the western, since you are more out in open water bordering land only on one side and open Atlantic on the other. However, on several occasions on the way down, I kept saying how smooth it was.

Alright so on to my fave day of the entire cruise, St Thomas day! Well for us it was St John day. I really wanted to go to Trunk Bay and it did not disappoint! I just wish the weather was a little better, and the waves were a bit strong so our snorkeling pics didn't really come out very clear.

We booked the excursion through RCCL. It was the St John Coastal Cruise Tour, and it runs in conjuction with the St John Historial Walking tour and the Shopping Tour. Our meeting time in the morning was 10:30, so you really have time to do a bit of shopping in the immediate area before you left. I don't think you would have time to take the water taxi into Charlotte Amalie to do better shopping. Or if you know exactly where you are going perhaps you could make it work. I wish I had more time here bc I really wanted to get one of those pirate hook bracelets. No go for me. :(

Anyway, we got off the ship and the weather was beautiful!

P1060305.JPG

When our excursion was ready to go, we followed the ferry captain, Capt Jack to our ferry with the three different tour groups. Each group had a different wristband color. For the Coastal Cruise we had blue. The ferry ride over was about 40 mins and a bit choppy but nothing terrible. What I didn't like was the style of Capt Jack's commentary. He would emphasize certain words or repeat words over and over again for emphasis, just not to my liking. It got kind of annoying after awhile. He did point out interesting facts though, like where Christopher Columbus ran aground bc he was not a very good navigator, and where he towed his ship to repair it, etc. I enjoyed the historic info.

Some pics going over to St John.

P1060366.JPG

P1060383.JPG

See how small and quiet the beaches are? There didn't seem to be many big beach resort type hotels on STJ at all. There were more on the STT side where there's just rows and rows of beach chairs.

This is Cruz Bay from one of the vantage points on STJ.

P1060405.JPG

Right down in Cruz Bay there is a small town with restaurants and shopping. This is Mongoose Junction. It's blurry bc I took it while the safari van was moving.

When I cruised on the Explorer last year, I, too, was really looking forward to the Eggs Benedict. I was disappointed as the eggs were too hard. I learned that I could ask for them "softer", and they were much better.

This was inside Mongoose, and up these stairs is where we ate at after out day at Trunk Bay. I forget the name but it has Dog in the name. (*Edit: ok now I see in the pic, it's Sun Dog Cafe LOL) The burger was pricey but very juicy. We asked if 40 mins was enough time to eat and they say yes, and we barely made it. More on that later. Anyway, it was here:

P1060430.jpg

There was also a nice shop down stairs facing the street that had some very nice quality t shirts, and I liked one with waves and a sail boat but it was $36. No thanks.

So finally we get to the vantage point for the best place to take a pic of Trunk Bay and our driver stops in front of a tree. =( Well it's still beautiful. I wish I was a little more brave and jumped out for a sec for a better pic.

P1060412.JPG

Finally at Trunk Bay! I've been looking at pics of Trunk for years thinking I would never be there in real life, and now I've finally done it!

P1060417.JPG

Oh I should mention, the taxi to Trunk is about $6pp and is an open air safari van. The driver will stop at several vistas for photo ops, but you have to be real quick. There are other beaches there that are far more secluded but I really wanted to go to Trunk. Once you get there, there is a $4pp entry fee. Not a big deal bc you have absolutely NO vendors bugging you to buy stuff, and it's kept very clean. There are showers, a snack bar, and a snorkel rental/gift shop, that's about it.

P1060419.JPG

As you can see, the weather got a bit cloudy. =(. The beach is narrow, but there are lifeguards on duty here. Later in the afternoon the tide started coming in and some people's stuff got wet, and one lady's towel almost got washed away. But don't worry, there's lots of trees with strong branches you can hang your stuff on. The beach also has lockers to rent, so that was nice. The gift shop had some cute stuff too and the prices were decent, except the T shirts were way overpriced.

P1060421.JPG

This was the rock island that you snorkel around and where the underwater snorkel trail is. I somehow imagined it would be different, like an actual trail underwater that says Go this way. Not really. They just put plaques on the bottom and list the species of coral or whatever there. There were some orange buoys floating around out there, I suppose marking around the area you should stay in. When you get out too far the water gets too deep and you can't see anything anyway. At least that day, the waves kicked up a lot of sand, so visibility wasn't very good. =(

See?

GOPR0049.JPG

I won't post any more snorkeling pics bc they all pretty much looked like that. But we saw lots of big coral, sea urchins, big blue fish, and many tiny glow in the dark fish.

My eggs were actually poaches perfectly, but the hollandaise didn't have much flavor. Oh well. :(

I thought this sign was kinda funny. Swimming not advised?

P1060425.jpg

So was this one. Sewer company back in town at Cruz Bay.

P1060432.JPG

So after our day at Trunk, and after eating, we rushed back to our ferry, and NOW the sun decides to come out. =/

P1060437.JPG

So like I said earlier, I didn't put any sunblock thinking it was too cloudy to get sun burnt. Well it wasn't, and on top of that sitting on the top deck of the ferry for 20 mins in addition to the 40 min ride back I got burnt, esp on my nose. LOL Why did we wait for 20 mins? Bc of stragglers that were in the little market across from the ferry dock, even after someone went inside to tell them to hurry up, they took their sweet time. Although the crew was very good and thorough and counted everyone and knew how many people were missing.

They are also aware that some people book the STJ walking and/or shopping tour to not actually do the tour, but just take is as a ferry ride over. I'm not sure, but I think they ask these people if they are going to be back in the afternoon or not, bc I noticed a lot of new faces on the way back. Turns out we were dropping them off at this resort on STT. I think it was a Marriott? I forget, but it was very pretty there.

P1060476.JPG

P1060479.JPG

At least we didn't get rained out! We sat next to a lady who was staying at the Marriott (?) and she said it was pouring rain just a few minutes earlier and they couldn't get to the beach. I did not notice any rain at all.

Some pics on the way back to STT. The first one one of the crew members pointed out the rock in the back was called Indian Head rock or something of that nature, can you see the profile of a face?

P1060493.JPG

I really liked how these shadow/sun setting pics came out. These ships were WAY out in the distance and I was surprised my little Lumix camera could take these so far away.

So dinner that night....

I had the seafood ceviche, it was just ok, not really what I was expecting. It wasn't bad, just not what I'm used to. It's not a tart as I like. It had one shrimp, a few bay scallops and then small pieces of what I'm guessing was fish or crab.

IMAG1189.jpg

Also the beef carppaccio, which was more like slices of roast beef rather than thin pieces of raw beef. It was good still though.

IMAG1191.jpg

And we also got soup too. The lamb soup had good flavor, but not actual pieces of meat, just veggie. The creamy one I can't remember what it was. =/

IMAG1192.jpg

IMAG1193.jpg

But the star of dinner that night was the rack of lamb! Oh wow was it ever tender! I love lamb, and I can't taste that gamey "lambiness" that people talk about, it just tastes good to me. Bf sometimes likes lamb if the fat isn't too thick, since he says it seems to get gooey. He also thought these were very good. The fat on it was melt in your mouth, like on a good prime rib. I think this was my fave dish the whole week. The mashed potatoes it came on were good too, but I have to admit I barely touched the veggies. LOL

IMAG1194.jpg

We also got the steak from the Classics menu. Have to say we did not care for this steak. I don't know if it was the cut, the quality or what, bc it was again cooked to our liking but it just didn't seem to be soft and juicy, perhaps not enough fat? Anyway, we ended up barely eating any of this. Our waiter Austin noticed and asked us if we wanted something else, but we weren't starving for something else, so we declined.

IMAG1196.jpg

I should note here, that like I said we aren't dessert people, so the first few nights we stuck around talking for a bit after he cleared our dishes, and he would always tell us to order dessert. After a few days, we decided to just leave right after we were done with our entrees so he wouldn't feel like he had to do the same routine every night. I hope he didn't find that rude of us, but we felt maybe us just parking our butts there after we were done wasn't the right thing to do either if we weren't having dessert. Plus we were able to make a few of the early shows since we did this.

Since I mentioned shows in the above post I will tell you about our thoughts, even though everything's kind of out of order. We had reservations for every show, and we never once went to one of the shows we had reserved. I try to plan, but things just didn't work out that way. Oh well. I'm sure someone else without reservations was happy to have our seats.

Anyway, I was excited to see Chicago. We didn't actually go in to sit, but stood in the back, so in case we didn't enjoy it, we wouldn't bother anyone by trying to get up and leave. Good thing we did this, bc I didn't really like this version. I'm not a theater type person. I guess it's just not my thing, although I love the music from Chicago and I really liked the movie. I know I know movie not the same.

I actually cancelled our reservation for Blue Planet, after watching clips on You tube and the trailers, I knew this would not be for us at all. I've seen several Cirque shows and enjoyed SOME of them, but the music is what really made up my mind. I'm not into pop music at all. Again, someone else enjoyed our seats so all was good.

Our fave show by far was OceanAria, the only show we watched from beginning to end. We loved the diving, and the extreme high dive took me by surprise. And the trampoline part was really cool too. I love technical stuff, so we watched from one of the aft balconies on the 14th (I think?) deck, so I could watch when pool changed to stage and vice versa. Very cool. The length was perfect too, without being too short or long being repetative. There were parts where the two girls were dancing around for a bit long, but I knew this was most likely to buy time for them to set up for the next thing.

We completely missed all the comedy shows, but we did watch the Love and Marriage show (hilarious), and the Quest (also hilarious).

We did the Prohibition Party as well which was after St Maartin, and I did not think this was worth it at all. It's $35pp, and yes it does include alcohol but the pours are so weak. They pass out the drinks while "in character" and don't really ask you which drink you want. I'm allergic to vodka, so I can't have it otherwise I get sick, even a few sips. They handed me a long island =/ without telling me what it was, so I had to wait for another server to come around and specifically ask for a rum drink.

Oh that reminds me, the STJ excursion includes rum punch on the way back. It's basically fruit punch LOL. Don't waste your calories.

Anyway, back to the Prohibition party. There was a band playing music, which was nice, and two cute girls dressed like flappers that would try and work the crowd and dance around. But to me it just seemed too forced. A lot of people dressed up, but it didn't really feel like a big time party. Esp with the lay out of the room, it's more like you are watching a show. The girls would grab people and drag them on the dance floor to dance or take pics. I'm glad they didn't drag me up there. They did this pony race type thing that was really corny too. I think they could have done that better. There was also some snacks there but I didn't check out what was there, wasn't hungry. Also this event overlapped with Quest (also the bartender flair show which I wanted to see but missed) so a lot of people left halfway through the Prohibition event to go see Quest. That's what we ended up doing. You can come and go as you please, so when we needed another drink we went back in to get another and left again. I would say unless you are with a group of friends that you think would enjoy this, I would skip it. For the two of us, $70 would have bought us a LOT of strong pours from our preferred bartenders, and those subsequent tips for them. Oh well, live and learn, right?

So now we are at the last port day St Maarten. I think it's abbreviated SXM? Not sure why. Anyway, we woke up to a view of this ginormous mega yacht. Oh wait, there was two. No wait actually there was THREE! The third one came in later in the afternoon and Capt Johnny actually said they were waiting for us to leave so it could dock where the Allure was. He also said the cheapest of those mega yachts were $300 million, and that all three together were worth $1.4 billion and worth MORE than the Allure! OMG who has that kind of money?! Anyone one this sailing, did you catch who was the owners of any of these?

P1060521.JPG

P1060523.JPG

Anyway, the ship docked at 7 and started letting people off around 7:30. Here is where we had issue this day. We had reserved a tour with Bernard's tours since his tours are so highly regarded here. A few weeks prior to the sailing, I emailed and also posted on their Facebook page about the meeting time. When you reserve a tour with them, the form online asks you what time your ship docks, not what time you want to do the tour. At the time, according to past cruise compasses and what I had on file, I selected 8am. I also knew that ship time and island time is different. So after I got a confirmation email from Bernard's that my meeting time was 8am ISLAND time, I asked how that could be since that would make it 7 am ship time, and we can't possible be out at the meeting point the moment the ship docks? It's always about half an hour later. I even asked on here and didn't really get a clear answer. So anyway, we ended up getting to the meeting point at 8 am SHIP time. We didn't think we were late bc there was a man there from Bernard's waiting for people to check in. He told us we were fine with the time and he even made us wait another 30 mins to see if he could get more walk by customers to fill up the van. Little did we know until after the tour ended that we completely missed the iguana farm and sea urchin man, two photo ops that I was really looking forward to. Not only that but we were still charged full price for the tour even though we didn't get the full tour.

Anyway, this is the meeting spot, up the stair by the info booth, behind the statue. Not that I would recommend this tour to anyone, but nevertheless, this is the view from there.

P1060525.JPG

So after waiting for more pax, we get into a van waiting and our driver (John I think) and we pass by the old salt pond where they used to harvest salt.

P1060527.JPG

Then he drives us through a very run down and sketchy looking part of town called Sucker Garden, yes it's really called that. That is the way to get to the French side of the island. When we get to the border there is a very ho hum sign telling you so.

P1060529.JPG

He tells us some more info that I don't quite remember probably bc I didn't find any to be particularly interesting for me. After about a 20 min or so drive we get to Orient Bay. First he takes us to the nude side. Of course it is always the old guys who love to let it all hang out. We paused there for about 15 secs and we were ready to go. He took us to La Playa towards the center of Orient Bay, next to Bikini Beach. In the parking lot where we got dropped off I saw this statue that we really wanted to take home with us.

And also the Budda Bar at Bikini is -----> That way.

P1060534.JPG

As you can see the weather is cloudy again.

P1060535.JPG

P1060536.JPG

This type of beach is more like a beach resort. You HAVE to rent chairs, you can't just put your towel down on the sand. So we were taken to the La Playa part of Orient Bay Beach bc they have a deal with Bernard's. Two chairs and an umbrella rental with two free "drinks" for $10. Sounds like a deal at first bc the other beaches charge $15. The beach is all pretty much the same. Very little sand, a few palm trees, but it's still topless (being on the French side and all) and we did not enjoy this at all. Now instead of old dudes stuff hanging out, it was old lady boobies everywhere. I guess that is just the American side of me. I don't want to see that and it makes me uncomfortable. In addition, all the vendors that would come by and bug you to buy their wares, and when you say no thank you (even with a smile) they give you the dirtiest looks! you can't even relax. There were two of these vendors who just happen to decide to have an arguement about something or another right in front of us. This is when we decided to take a walk. That's when we saw this big guy.

P1060538.JPG

He was the best thing about this place. The drinks were a joke too. I think Kool Aid has more alcohol in it than what they gave us. At least we were able to sit in their restaurant side and we weren't kicked out, since the kitchen didn't open till about 11:30. This was the most excruciating 90 mins ever. Could not wait until we left. We even contemplated taking our own taxi back into town we were that upset. It's not just the toplessness, or just the drinks, or the just the vendors, but I think just everything together at once, and after being subjected to naked old dudes, we were kinda over it. Well we stuck it out bc I really wanted to see Maho Beach. That did not disappoint. More on that later.

I guess if you think you will have a problem with the nudity, don't come here. The beach was just so so anyway after being at Trunk the day before. It wouldn't have mattered to me if we skipped this and had more time in Marigold (which was WAY too short all of 20 mins!)
