Tipping currency.....

Recommended Posts

This probably sounds like a dumb question, but if I choose to tip the staff personally with cash on RCI Rhapsody, should I do it in Aus or American currency?

Its entirely over to you, as is the decision as to whether you tip or not.

Local currency allows them to go ashore and spend, US currency means they will bank it into their account on board in the ships bank, and if they dont like the currency you tip in , then they can convert it on board into whatever they need.....eg ....If the staff are from Eastern Europe, as a lot seem to be these days , they will probably change it into roubles for sending home.

Either is fine.

We always prepay our tips but if someone gives exceptional service we throw them a bit extra at the end of the cruise, usually in Aussie Dollars.

We also take some US $1 notes with us and use these to tip room service and drink waiters. I only tip a drink waiter if they bring a drink to me (eg in the theatre). If I go to a bar I don't give them a tip.

If you choose to tip in person and in cash at the end of the cruise instead of the daily charged amount or auto Gratuities for MTD then the guest relations will give you a breakdown of percentage that go to each person in the tipping pool so you can put the right amounts in each envelope.

With drink servers and bar staff you can nominate an amount and sign at the bottom of the drinks receipt when you sign for the bill as often as you like and it will just show up on your bill during the cruise as "Extra Gratuity".

If you are just tipping over and above gratuities AU or NZ Dollars are fine but if paying correct gratuity amount in cash it will be better for you with far less calculations to pay in US Dollars.

If you just want to give some cash out dont bother giving Vietnamese Dong or Indonesian Rupiah as it will just end up in the charity box at guest services:D:D:D

It really doesn't matter what currency is used as a tip is a tip, but of course the amount is what really matters. We prepay our gratuities and then provide an extra to all the staff who provided us with the special treatment that made our cruise that bit better.:D

I'm not sure what the current exchange rate it but when I went to Indonesia back in 2005, 1000 Rupiah was worth about 15 cents Australian! So no, that's not an appropriate currency to tip in.

If you are tipping extra over and above any currency $US $NZ $AU Pound or Euros will do.

Not sure why people tip cash notes to barstaff and drinks waiters as you can do this with a signature and extra grat on each drinks receipt, drink pourer's at the bar and drink waitstaff with the trays share their extra tips cash or signed for anyway?

No need to carry US $1 bills onboard for tips, get a US $50 bill or more before you leave as its less to carry and then change it at the casino cashier onboard:) They only usually give out max 10 x $1 bills but you can get 10 1,s and 4 10,s and just change a 10 when you need some $1,s :)

This is how I changed up all my US cash for Vietnam and Cambodia which both take USA dollars, I took some $50,s onboard and jut changed them daily into $1,s so when ashore I didnt have to take local money or accept it (which is worthless in any other country) as change from a $5 $10 or $20;)

Not many people think about splitting large notes at the casino even on the USA threads, I discovered you can do this and a pretty good tip given everyone says take a pile of 1,s onboard with you :)

Roubles only applies to Russia. Some staff are from there, but there are also many other Eastern European staff from other countries with their own currencies, e.g. Euro, koruna, Hryvna.

Ok it looks like the consensus is that the best currency to tip staff in is:

koruna or Hryvna :D:D:D

If all you have is AUD and the cruise starts on Australia, then I would tip in AUD. If you have US$, then you can tip in that currency.:)

I just like the idea of tipping in person, in cash, not this prepaid stuff, or having it added to our onboard accounts. I know the staff work hard and I would like to acknowledge them in person. I even read that it's nice to wrap a note around a chocolate and give it to them in person. I thought that sounded nice. :)

So if I take a stack of $5 or $10 notes in $AUD on board and hand them to the staff in person on a daily basis, would that be acceptable?

If you have paid the prepaid tips or not, it will not stop you from doing that, those tips are pooled anyway.

I suppose your option is one where you then opt out of paying the tips alltogether and then hand out tips to the staff you want. There is still plenty of crew who give you service that you do not meet.

Me, I prefer to pre pay the tips and then give extra to the staff that provide that special service, the "above and beyond" type service. There is always a few around the ship/bars/dining room.:D

As long as you have chosen MTD which involves compulsory gratuities at time of booking:)

If not then its still fine as long as you leave the exact same amount as daily autos, around $12 per person per day at the cruise end to staff who are in the Gratuity pool as they will be expecting it no matter how many $5 and $10 notes you hand out during the cruise:)
