paul929207 Posted July 7, 2013 #4 Share Posted July 7, 2013 The Princess exchange rate will not be good. Let your bank do the conversion.
1025cruise Posted July 7, 2013 #5 Share Posted July 7, 2013 My understanding is that it is best to let Princess charge you in USD, then let your bank convert it. It is also my understanding that you need to go to the desk on the ship and verify this will be the case.
cnd crsr Posted July 7, 2013 #6 Share Posted July 7, 2013 Once on the ship, go to the Pursers Desk and make sure you will be billed in U.S. dollars. Let your bank do the conversion. Enjoy your cruise. Alaska is awesome:)
beg3yrs Posted July 7, 2013 #7 Share Posted July 7, 2013 I agree with the posters with one clarification. Some cruises are not billed in USD. Specifically, the "Aussie Experience" cruises are billed in Australian dollars (I know OP is going to Alaska and that's billed in USD but other CC members read these posts for information as well). As one said, let your bank convert the money, just accept Princess' billing in the ship's currency. Princess is highly unlikely to give you a better conversion rate than your bank. I suppose there might be a few cards/banks or unique situations where using the Princess conversion would be advantageous but I can't think of any. Pam in CA Posted July 7, 2013 #8 Share Posted July 7, 2013 The reason you don't want Princess to do the conversion and bill you in non-US currency is that their exchange rates are always very (VERY) bad. You are far better off being charged in US$ and having your bank do the exchange at a more reasonable, and current, exchange.
eandj Posted July 7, 2013 #9 Share Posted July 7, 2013 Also check at your bank and see what they will charge for the conversion change and rate. Some bank credit cards will charge for that service. You can find banks/credit card companies that will not charge a fee and will give you an excellent currency exchange rate based on the date of charge. But no matter what they charge it will be less than PRincess will charge.

Gunner22aa Posted July 8, 2013 #12 Share Posted July 8, 2013 Having let Princess do it once and once only have your own bank/credit card provider do it. The Princess rate is about 3% more expensive which can be a bunch if your shipboard account is large.
