Cunard changes smoking policy

When smoking is banned on the balconies, the anti smoking crowd will next turn to the casino, then they will want to ban it on the promenades and next it will be the whole ship. These people have no scrupples.

Evidently not. All they want is not to have to breathe second hand smoke.

So your blaming alcohol for spousal abuse?

Alrighty then. I'm happy that you've stop smoking and I don't doubt it was very difficult. Congratulations.

I certainly do not blame every case of spousal abuse on alcohol. Just 8 out of 10 cases. I work with a local battered spouse center and I see it far too much of it and the alcohol is usually in there somewhere. Just sayin'....

For me it was carrot sticks - I think I turned orange for awhile:D and I was forever chewing on a stir stik! Every now and then I dream that I've started smoking again, and I wake up with a dread of having to go through quitting all over again. What a relief when I'm fully awake! But every now and then, even now, I will reach for my cigarettes after dinner:eek: and then laugh at myself! What I most appreciated was the freedom that quitting gave me. No more trying to find places to smoke, worrying if I had a light, getting to the store before it closed if I ran out. (Ashamed to admit I was a 3-pack a day person.......:o)

That was one of the things that inspired me.......being forever in the hunt for a place where I could smoke.......it was a pain in the butt!! And always wondering if I had more cigs, lighters.....if I had enough when I travelled, etc. etc. the list goes on!!!

Oh I can believe that but it's the person that has it in them to begin with. 8 out of 10 people that drink don't go out an beat on someone.

Lines like Celebrity have already banned smoking in the casino and all but a small area on the promenade and personally it is a "breath of fresh air". Casinos are so nasty smelling that non-smokers can't come near one without gagging. On Princess, they had one evening as "smoke-free" in the casino. A lot of good that does with 10 years of smoke already in the carpet and draperies. I agree there should be smoking areas, but not in places that you must pass thru on many ships such as a casino or atrium.

Oh my, that's so not my experience having been involved in a shelter for some years. Yes there are such incidences, but most speak to underlying mental illnesses and the abuser himself being abused in childhood, or growing up in an abusive environment. Alcohol is very low on the list.

Actually, I wish they would allow smoking in the casinos. It will keep DH out of them if they do (and save me money) :D

My dad was a smoker. Like you say you have to put your mind to it. He's a person that has zero willpower but he did it. I was a casual smoker, I could easily pick it up or quit. I wish other things were that easy for me. Some folks are just not ready to do it.

And people have some help available to them nowadays to quit, like the nicotine patches.....I didn't have any help, I just had to do it on my own.

My friend finally quit with a patch....it helped her a lot. There is help available out there for folks who truly want to quit. Lord knows, it took me several tries but I finally made it and it has been 20 years now since I have smoked. I try to encourage all of those people out there that are trying to quit....it is one of the hardest things to do. Addiction to nicotine is like an addiction to heroin they say, and I believe them. My advice to anyone out there trying to quit, is "Don't Ever Give Up".....keep trying until one day you are successful. It WILL happen, eventually!:)

Lorekauf, glad your addiction was not that bad, you were one of the lucky ones (like my ex-DH) who could stop at any time without much suffering.

And PS, Bon Voyage on your cruise!:D

The telling quote from the Cunard release is, "Following feedback from our guests and the results of recent customer research.......". While this may be just so much rhetoric, I believe Cunard - like all other lines - is finding its niche in the market and promoting it.

We all know HAL has been changing in many, many ways. Some think for the better, some believe for the worse, but the decisions and changes are coming from cold, hard calculations. Balcony smoking on HAL (and Seabourn) will remain in place until it is no longer financially profitable. And given the other lines' rules, HAL is positioned to be the last resort of those who want to smoke on their verandas so it's likely to be a profitable perk going forward for quite some time.

To smoke or not to smoke is a hugely emotional issue for passengers on both sides of the issue, but businesses don't (and shouldn't) let emotion dictate policies that effect their bottom line.
