Beware Cruise Cash!

Hmmmmmmmmmmmm..... I am curious if you have $160.00 cruise cash and then give your credit card, if the cruise cash is automatically applied first to purchases/charges??

Maybe I am missing something here, but it seems that the only way to lose $160.00 in cruise cash is to have a $0.00 S&S account and have prepaid tips.

We were given $50.00 in "cruise cash" for our upcoming cruise, and I assumed that would be applied to the first DOD or whatever my first S&S charge is and that it won't go to my CC until the cruise cash is gone.......??????

Just got burned for $160!! My Platinum but first cruise since cruise cash came about. Turns out it is not refundable!!! We have always paid for OBC ahead of the cruise then gotten the leftover back at the end of the cruise.

Got a check for $5.32 that must have been tax/port fee reduction. Called about the remaining cruise cash and was just told that there is no way to purchase OBC ahead of time that is refundable. Has to be used on that sailing. Can't cash out on the ship either.

First time in 10 Carnival cruises I am actually

Sorry you lost your $ -- it's always so depressing when you are counting on money that never materializes! :(

But is does say that it is non-refundable and there have been tons of threads on CC about same.

How does your Cruise Cash balance show up on the kiosk and/or statements? Are you able to see how much you have remaining?

I am very curious about this too.

Like I said before, the only way I see losing Cruise Cash would be to have $0.00 S&S account for the entire cruise. Otherwise, I would have thought charges would come from that first???

Cruise cash, gift cards and any other OBC is used first......then any other charges beyond that to the CC........

We don't buy cruise cash ahead of time, but generally we have extra OBC due to being a shareholder, discounts after booking, etc. We did the casino thing also. I just pulled the extra money over from the S&S card to a credit while playing slots. Then we just cashed it out at the casino window. Very easy and no one questioned whether it was money we won or not.

We always head to the kiosk after we board and print a copy of our sign and sail account. That way we know up front how much we have that is considered non-refundable. If we have any non-refundable left we take care of it on the last night.

OP sorry for your loss. I don't understand why Carnival does not refund it.

Gotcha! That makes sense. So to correct, my previous post that the OP must have had a $0.00 S&S account.... technically the OP could have bought $500 in "Cruise Cash" and then had the credit balance of $160.00 and lost it!!! YIKES!! :(

Sorry you didn't notice that. I always liked to buy the drink coupons but won't do that anymore either since it's non-refundable. I think if no one buys these products than it will go the way of FCC and end of cruise party...which I LIKED!

We had that problem with drink coupons we purchased in April & July of 2012 for our 2013 B2B. I wanted half for the 1st leg & half for the 2nd leg. They had changed the coupons to bar credits and posted all of them to the 1st leg.

It took 3 days to get it corrected. The very nice guy at the purser's desk had to go through corporate to get it transferred. I was very annoyed till they got it corrected.

I do not drink very much but enjoy one chocolate mocha get-a-way every night. Plus the wine that I carry on. I'm a CCL stockholder and receive $100 OBC on each of my B2B cruises and that will pay for my drinks. I'm done with bar credits.

Sorry OP this happened to you.

I bought Cruise cash without realizing it was non-refundable.

No, I didn't read the fine print because I thought it was the same as the drink tickets you used to buy. Thought it was just a new name.

Luckily for me I came here to cc first and found out about the fine print before losing it all on my cruise.

Bummer you and others aren't so lucky. :(

It's pretty shady of Carnival to do this imho.

Sorry about your loss OP. I can understand buying cruise cash as a gift for someone going on a cruise, but to purchase it for one's own cruise is a terrible mistake IMHO. All you are doing is giving Carnival a interest free loan with a possible chance of forfeiting the money if you do not use it. You are better off with the good old piggy bank. If you cancel the cruise or run into a financial emergency, you have the money at your disposal.

Agreed. I wouldn't use Cruise Cash unless I knew for certain I was going to use every last penny. However, a Gift Card does the same thing and you can apply the unused money to your next cruise. http://www.carnivalgiftcards.com ;)

Too bad OP :(
So sorry this happened to you:(
We use cruise cash the last 2x on our last 2 cruises.....
We always (after checking our S&S, for any balance left on the last night) down load any left over cash to our casino players account and after a couple cheap spins, cash out at the casino cashier......have lost any $$ that way;)
You are not "supposed" to do this. We did exactly this on the Glory this summer.
One of the casino managers allowed it but said it was against policy and warned against doing this again.
Try it , but don't count on it.

If you buy, say, $400 in cruise cash, and only use $240 of it... you will lose whatever is left over.
Why not just go to a store and buy a prepaid credit card and use that? Some (Amex Bluebird) will even let you use it at atm or mail yourself a check without fees.
I've heard (but not verified myself) that Carnival does not accept pre-paid cards that do not have the person's name on them. So using pre-paid cards can be risky. Although you could use it at an ATM then put the cash toward your S&S account.
