Concerts At Sea-beginning of paying for Entertainment

I wouldn't consider the elimination of a passenger participation silly game a considerable cut. That's what's most likely being eliminated, if anything. Remember that currently, there's NO professional entertainment every night. The main theater is actually underutilized under the current entertainment lineup. These concerts are actually ADDING ON, even if it's for an additional fee.

 

Just because passenger participation games are not your cup of tea, doesn't mean others won't miss it and consider it a big loss.

 

So they are not adding on. They are taking away something free and enjoyable for a pay venue.

I prefer that Carnival charges me $399 for a cruise and I get to CHOOSE whether I spend $20 extra on a concert, $35 extra at the steakhouse, $100 extra for a spa pass, $200 extra for a drink package, etc, instead of charging me a flat cruise fare of $754 with all these things included.

 

I think people should be thankful that cruise pricing these days is unbundled, giving them the chance to truly choose what they want to pay for, instead of being forced to pay for things that they may not care for.

Free silly passenger participation games can be moved to where they belong; a smaller venue or the pool deck, making way for better usage of the main theater. I still haven't gone to one of these games at the main theater where the place has been packed. Usually just a few rows of scattered people is all I've ever seen.

 

And although there may legitimately be some people who might actually consider the elimination of these games "a big loss", I get the feeling that most people wont.

A lot of people simply "don't get it". Why tie up the main lounge for 30 minutes of selling bingo cards, 15 minutes of bingo?

The next generation of cruise ships being built will reflect that huge showrooms and MDR will be eliminated for smaller mutiple venues for both shows and dining

 

The big showrooms sit empty most of the day...an incredible waste of space...rather then have 6 main entrees on one menu in the MDR...you select the small dining venue that features what you have a taste for...still comes out of the central kitchen, just served in a different and smaller setting

 

Carnival Live & other dining innovations are the beginning of preparing the cruising public for the upcoming change in cruise ship design

For a gambler who gambles every evening, it would be a big change. Since these are primarily on 3 and 4 night cruises. Removing 1 night is taking away 1/4 to 1/3 of their normal entertainment.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the casino already open at night when the ship is overnighting in Nassau? I was under the impression that this was an agreement between the cruise lines and the Bahamian government.

 

So the ship staying longer hours in Nassau due to a concert should not affect your gambling habits.

The funny thing is, when 2.0 upgrades were announced, it was all the same complaining, just the opposite!

 

"2.0 = fare increases. All these upgrades aren't going to come for free! Now they'll raise cruise fares for things I won't even use! If you want a specialty burger or special comedy lounge... pay for them yourself and leave my cruise fares alone!"

 

So now, they're giving OPTION and people still not happy.

Let me break the bad news to you all... if you are waiting for new additions and improvements, for free, AND lower cruise prices... that ain't going to happen.

I wouldn't go to one of these concerts, I'm just not a concert kind of person. I am also disappointed that they are taking away yet another evening entertainment.

 

When I 1st started cruising there was a production show every evening with a full house band. They had early and late shows. Then they started pairing down the house band and eventually went to a single show per evening repeating it sometimes early, sometimes late so everyone had a chance to see it.

 

And now to make it even worse if the concert is in Cozumel, the casino and the shops won't be open so there really isn't much else to do. John says the piano bar and comedy club will be open but those are already very limited seating. I don't think I would feel comfortable being on shore after dark in Cozumel. I don't even like being in a taxi alone during the day.

 

Truly a disappointment.

 

Yes the comedy club and the pino bar will be open so no they are not taking away an eving of entertinment just a venu. And will seatting is limited. The concert will most likly be full plus there will be people who stay ashore longer. Hence not as many looking fir the limted number of seats.

In my eyes, CCL is simply offering (to a smaller degree) what some other lines offer daily. On NCL, if you want to, there is a dinner theatre you can attend, you pay for the meal and entertainment. All lines offer pay for restaurants and dining venues. Personally, DW and I have only twice eaten in the steakhouses, once on RCI Freedom of the Seas (gift from TA) and once on CCL Glory (our 1st time on a cruise with a steakhouse). While they both were good, we feel no need to pay extra for these. BTW, none of the Fantasy class ships offer steakhouses, so has their food suffered in the MDR because of better food in the steakhouse? Feel the same with the concerts. If We want to go we will purchase tickets (highly unlikely), if not interested, we won't purchase. We very seldom purchase any excursion any more (been there, done that), so I see no big change here.

 

If we happen to be on a ship with a concert and in Cozumel, I guess I will have to spend a little more time with the DW, as the casino will be closed during the concert. Now am I to consider this a loss or gain? To me, this can be a positive, but I'm willing to wait and see how this all plays out, and not take an attitude, that the world of cruising is coming to an end.

I was looking at the Jennifer Hudson cruise on the Breeze,June 15. It does not give you the option of chosing whether yu want to go to the concert or not. Therefore, everyone who wants to cruise for that week has to pay for the concert as well, not to mention that their children/parents will also have to pay for the concert. Did I miss something, or does everyone that cruise on 6/14 Breeze have to pay for this concert? If you booked early, you are in luck, but if not.....

I don't think you know what you are talking about. You book the cruise. Then if you want to attend the concert you book the excursion. The only ones paying to go are the ones who book the excursion.

 

Now the price of the cruise might have gone up after the announcement, not sure since I never checked into that cruise, but you are still just paying for the cruise.

You're a bit mixed up. Unless you pay for an actual concert ticket, you not attending concert. It is a completely separate fee, hence this entire thread. ;)

If you actually book the cruise, then you look under the excursions and this is where you find the option to purchase concert tickets. So no, everyone can not attend (seating capacity) and everyone does not have to pay to see.

You cannot purchase tickets to the shows until you book the cruise.

This is Carnival testing the waters to see how successful pay entertainment is. If it's successful, they will keep pushing the boundaries until eventually any and all entertainment may be pay venues. It's a trojan horse. And I'd pay $5 to see Brett Butler. She's funny as hell. I bet she could crack some sarcastic jokes about David Brenner.

 

No, they're trying to bring new cruisers into the fold. The target market for this promotion is folks who have never cruised before, but it is an added bonus to people who enjoy concerts and cruising.

On the short cruises there are free shows/events every night in the main show room. Some are production shows, some are passenger participation shows. There is also the casino that normally is open every evening but now won't be due to being in the port so late. That is how people can say they are removing entertainment.
