Avoid North Charleston the area has changed and no longer safe after dark, If you don't stay downtown, look at the area around the Tanger outlets, lots of places to eat, shop and stay or try Mount Pleasant.

When doing your research, watch out for the terms "Rustic" or "Historic".

This doesn't mean the hotels are bad, just means the buildings are old and most likely renovated.

What does this mean?

Means that while having been renovated and brought up to current codes, the rooms will most likely be much smaller than modern hotels and the bathrooms and size of bathrooms are an after thought.

While it is always nice to save money, why not treat yourself? Charleston is a beautiful old city - worth a trip in itself. For a little more more you could spend the night in a place like Indigo Inn, in the historic district - easy walking distance to many sites - and give yourself an additional travel experience.
