wandb Posted December 31, 2014 #1 Share Posted December 31, 2014 Can someone please clear up a pronunciation question for me? We are sailing on the Zuiderdam in 3 weeks. New ship to us, but really looking forward to it. Does that first syllable rhyme with "sigh" or with "zoo"? Thanks!:):)
Alberta Quilter Posted December 31, 2014 #2 Share Posted December 31, 2014 "Sigh" is what I was told, kinda like Side-r-dam.

At the top of this board is a sticky about the HAL fleet.. Sticky: An Introduction to the Ships and Classes of the HAL Fleet In Post No. 13 the Hosts included Copper 10-8 (He's fluent in Dutch & now works for HAL) pronunciation of all the HAL ships.. amster65 Posted December 31, 2014 #4 Share Posted December 31, 2014 Checked out post #13 and most of the pronunciations are pretty close, but the name Zuiderdam has a typical Dutch sound which is not translatable. Just call it the Southdam and be done with it. :D
barefootguy Posted December 31, 2014 #5 Share Posted December 31, 2014 As we were on the ship a few yrs. ago, all called it the Ziiiderdam... Yes, that's rhyming with sigh... Should you be doing a partial canal cruise, do stop by the YouTube vid on our signature. Some of it's canal, then other is wonderful snorkeling in Bonaire! Just go back to the big blue ship when you're done playing in port. All will be good unless there are two big blues in port the same day as we had on our cruise... Yes, Westerdam was in same port, same day & at that time did all the big toots going out of port. Same as in FLL. Do enjoy life aboard the Zuiderdam!!! OleSalt Posted December 31, 2014 #6 Share Posted December 31, 2014 The lyrics were, "Sipping cider by the Zuider Sea" Hope this helps
wandb Posted December 31, 2014 Author #7 Share Posted December 31, 2014 Thanks, everyone!! That has been my pronunciation, but I was corrected (by someone who obviously didn't know either!!)
xlxo Posted December 31, 2014 #8 Share Posted December 31, 2014 Another vote for "sigh". What's interesting is putting the name through google translate. You hear different pronounciations for Dutch and English.
wandb Posted December 31, 2014 Author #9 Share Posted December 31, 2014 It rhymes with sigh or Zigh.. At the top of this board is a sticky about the HAL fleet.. Just checked out post #13 on the HAL sticky, and guess what! He pronounces it "Zey-derdam". That seems to rhyme with Hey or day. Then I got to thinking about all the Aussies out there---who do not pronounce "day" the same way we do! So there are many accents and many choices. Guess I'll stick with most of you. Ziiii-derdam it is!!:)
PathfinderEss Posted December 31, 2014 #10 Share Posted December 31, 2014 I go back and forth with the Zuiderdam name. Most the time I say 'sigh' but sometimes I say 'zoo'. Whatever is correct, hope you have a wonderful cruise on her.

Cruiser Andi Posted January 1, 2015 #14 Share Posted January 1, 2015 When we cruised her the staff onboard the ship pronounced it as if it rhymed with sigh. Enjoy your cruise.

Tell me about your cruise---have you picked a ship, date, etc? Will this be a round trip, or are you ending up in Alaska somewhere? Strictly cruise or cruise/tour? Have y'all been to Alaska before? You will have such fun planning these two trips!

Rare Copper10-8 Posted January 2, 2015 #20 Share Posted January 2, 2015 There is no equivalent in English pronunciation for the Dutch pronunciation of "ui", The closest you're going to get in English is "eye" as in "Zey-derdam"
