Hey all, In 84 days I will be going to Bermuda via the Breakaway....3 questions is there a bus transfer to local beaches from the ship or close to it? and how much? Also, does it take American dollars?

The bus is available right at the pier. You can buy a 3 day bus/ferry pass when you get off. That way you can take the bus to the beach and the ferry to Hamilton or St. Georges. I don't know the exact cost, but I do know that it was very reasonable.

Unless the rates have changed, I believe it's $35 for a 3-day pass, and $25 for a 2-day pass. The passes allow for unlimited travel on the buses throughout the island, as well as the ferries to Hamilton and St. George. Definitely worth it!

You can buy the pass as soon as you get off the ship, in the Heritage Wharf building at the information desk. There should be signs to guide you.

The bus marked "SPECIAL" goes directly from the dockyard to the main beaches along the south shore (like Horseshoe Bay). It's very easy to get around on the island.

The Bermudian dollar is locked 1:1 with the US dollar, so there is no exchange rate, and US dollars are accepted everywhere. The only caveat is that if you use a large bill to buy a small item (like using a $20 bill to buy a pack of gum) you may get change back in Bermudian dollars, which won't be accepted back in the US.

Have fun!

With megaships at Dockyard, the ferry is better in getting back on that last day as the mid-sized island buses are designed for locals, except the designated beach specials & can be full. Allow extra time to get back to the ship to not become the next pier runners being cheered as it's no fun to miss the ship going home, true for the ferry as well.

Last summer was our first time in Bermuda and we had a lot of fun.

US dollars are accepted everywhere.

The people are friendly and the public transportation is easy to use. We used the public buses and ferries without any problem. Other transportation options are available. Have a great trip. :)

Think about what you intend to do before you jump up and buy a two or three day transport pass. People tend buy three day pass without thinking about how much they will actually use it.

We had a tour planned the first day, so no transport.

Second day we took ferry to Hamilton. Shopped and had lunch. Took bus back to Dockyard.

Third day we hung around dockyard. Shopped and lunch.

In our case, a pass would have been useless. Ferry and bus trip were a lot less cost than pass.

If you plan on using cash on the buses, you have to have the correct change in quarters. The buses don't take dollar bills and I don't believe the ferries take any money at all. You have to use tokens on the ferries. You can also buy tokens for the buses to get away from carrying $4 in quarters in your pocket. There are also one day bus passes that run $18 for the day per person. If you figure out how many times you will be using the buses or ferries, you can decide if the transportation pass is for you. If you buy a two day pass, it has to be used on two consecutive days, not on the first and third day your are in Bermuda. At the main Bus terminal in Hamilton, you can buy books of tickets that cost about $15 for 30 tickets and it is one ticket per ride. That works for some people to but you have to get to Hamilton to get them. They were not available at the Dockyard. If you have anyone under 15, I believe, they qualify for the Children's rate, which is half price.

Excel point about getting the 2 and 3 day passes, or the 1 day pass only depending on plans for visiting various parts of the islands - entirely DIY or use ship's sponsored tours (and, you will discover riding on the same buses - as chartered & specials, LOL :D:)

For 2 1/2 days - buying the 2 days pass is good as many don't want to go far on the last day & stay near Dockyard. With NCL's smaller ship days going into downtown Hamilton & St. George's - the 3 day pass was definitely the way to go.

The ticket booklet systems is the excellent alternative as it can be shared among pax, calculate how # are needed & buy, and split them up - as each person needs his/her own Day Pass otherwise, or carry exact change in coins or tokens for the buses, and it's based on fare zone systems.

For example, if you plan ahead to visit St. George, you can take the ferry and ride over, it's faster than transfering buses downtown at the bus terminal and a scenic one. Spend time at SG, perhaps do a lunch, then ride a bus over to downtown Hamilton & checkout the waterfront, the shops & the government buildings, etc. - maybe a dinner & see the Harbor Festival in the evening. Lastly, catch the ferry direct back to Dockyard in 20 minutes and hit the bufflet for late night goodies, etc. - good use for a One Day Pass.

If you are going just to the nearby beach(es) from the ship, then the single ride zoned/fare is better - or, maybe the shared taxi ride.

The best value for most is the 2 Day Pass at $25 as for 1 Day, it's $18 and you will need to be riding a lot to save money over coins & tokens - but, still saving money over ship's single tour prices for 3 hours. :D

BDA - one of our favorite islands, maybe 2016 ...
