Canadians - Current Exchange Rate?

Recommended Posts

I was able to cash out no problem at all. First time, asked for $500 cash. The cashier had to call for approval (because it was more that $400 I think) but with my ID and sea card it was no problem. Second time was the last night of the cruise, to withdraw the last of my OBC. Calculated what charges would be applied (3%) and took out I think about $490. There was a maximum purchase of $1000 per stateroom, but as we had 2 rooms, I was able to buy about $1500 ahead of time.

The cashier did not ask why I was cashing out or if I was playing any games in the casino.

I also have the same question. I am cruising in June and want to maximize the $1.07 exchange rate from my booking back in Jan 2015.:D

Yes as others have said, head to the cashier and withdrawl your amount. We did it 300.00 at a time. No problems at all!

Can you just load up your refundable purchased OBC onto a slot machine, play a $1 game or two, then cash out? Wouldn't that save the 3% cashier fee and the hassle of trying to get the cashier to approve it?

Eta: nm. I see now that loading money onto a slot machine still incurs a 3% convenience fee, so either way, you're paying 3%. Might as well just go to the cashier.

We were on Norwegian last year and because we had bought the OBC we went to the cashier cage and were not charged a fee. If our travel agent had put OBC on our account we would have been charged. We had $2,000 total OBC and withdrew enough to play with and shore excursion money for the next day. Hope this helps.

We purchased our OBC directly from Norwegian and still had to pay the fee. Not only that, we had originally purchased $2000 OBC but received a phone call as we were heading for airport that they now allow only $1,000. They refunded the difference. If they are going to change the rules, they should at least let you keep what you have already purchased.

There is a $1000 limit and has been for a few months. Lots of us had refunds over purchases more than that. There was a long thread about this.

Anyone have a current rate? I had booked in February at a rate of

33%, I cancelled that cruise and rebooked in May, assuming I'd get a better rate, NCL PCC said it was 25%, and I had read on here it was 20%.

When I signed into my NCL it is still at the 33% rate, I've called a week and a half ago and they said it was a mistake, still waiting for it to be fixed.

I can't understand the SDP pricing at all. I also looked at the pricing for one shorex we are interested in for the same cruise I looked at for the SDP.

The online price was USD139 and the price to me in CAD was 165.48; the rate was 1.19.

Wow, this will be my 9th cruise and I never ever knew about the buying an obc before going on thing lol........how did I miss this hahaha? Just checked my account as I booked back in January 2015 and my exchange rate is 1.075.....yippee!!! I did prepay gratuities already and booked one excursion and they are all at that exchange rate.....yay! We will definitely buy some OBC to use as our cash onboard, what a smart idea, thanks everyone!!!!

Can you use this money to pay your bill at the end of the cruise or does that have to go on a cc?

I have just looked at the 3 day UDP package; online it is quoted at USD69 while on MyNCL I am quoted CAD96.93. That is a rate of 1.40!!!

Mike

Is it possible that the USD price does not include service charge while on your account it is included?

That's exactly what it is, I just checked NCL web site - the small print under the USD price says 18% service charge will be added upon purchase, and it is included in the CDN price on my own booking at 96.93 CDN. It does work out to 1.19 rate.

Thank you for the clarification; that sounds better.

We put some OBC on our account pre-cruise because they gave it to us at 20%. When we were towards the end of the cruise (may 2016), we knew we would have some extra credit left on our account. The purser's desk said it would be refunded to the credit card. We didn't want the exchange rate and the conversion fee, so we loaded our card in the casino with as close to the amount as the machines would allow (they only accepted $5 demoninations). We played a couple of rounds on the $0.20 pulls and then cashed out at the cashier...no problem. Went back to the purser's desk our last day as we had the $2.87 left on the card. Easy.

I managed to luck out and have OBC at 7.5% conversion, does anyone know where I can find something in writing that says that I can cash out my OBC (purchased on the NCL site) at the purser's desk or the casino?

It'd be amazing to buy $1,000 of USD for $1,075 CAD but based on the recent NCL return horror stories here, I'm a little weary.

You're buying OBC at the same FX rate when you booked your cruise. The FX rate is fixed at the time of your booking.

Don't know where it is written but there is no problem with getting the cash. :D We had bought the same way (at 7.5%) before our South American cruise earlier this year, we spent some on board for FCCs and then "bought" the rest back over about 4 visits to the "casino cage". :D They charge 3% fee and usually wish you luck with the slots!! ;) ;)

Thanks!

I don't really linger around the casino much on cruises because of all the smoke. So they just take a few hundred off your OBC account and give you USD cash in decently sized bills?

I don't know what size bills you consider "decent sized". They tend to give larger ones and will change some. There is also a change machine that will break down bills "slowly' when it is working!!!!!!
