hawkeyetlse Posted June 5, 2015 #2 Share Posted June 5, 2015 They could at least leave a few hours later on Tuesday evening so people could have a full day at the beach or wherever. I think the Dawn should have at least as much time in port as the Breakaway (possibly a little more, given that the first day for the Dawn is a Sunday with limited options). NCL can do it, but every additional hour in port costs money, which they pass on to us.

NCL can do it, but every additional hour in port costs money, which they pass on to us. This is the key - how much would it raise fares. In addition to port fees being higher, fuel costs would likely go up a bit because the ship would have to sail faster to get back to Boston on time. I have no answers, just thoughts to ponder. Va. Plumber Posted June 5, 2015 #4 Share Posted June 5, 2015 I doubt they would have to sail faster, since they only take a day and two nights to get there.

Off course they have to sail faster to do it in less time. With 2 full sea days back they cruise at a fuel sipping 13 knots
biker@sea Posted June 5, 2015 Author #6 Share Posted June 5, 2015 Bermuda has been a top money maker for 1/4 Century . Full ship's and high fare. They could give back what we once had . .
df5250 Posted June 5, 2015 #7 Share Posted June 5, 2015 It would be so nice to have that additional time in port... so much so, I've been eyeing the Boston to Bermuda on HAL to get a little more port time in Bermuda...

Granted the ship docks in Hamilton which has much more nightlife than the Dockyard, however, when the ship is at sea getting there it's not my cup of tea. Something to consider when looking between the two brands.

The Casino's open now sooo ??? . NCL can and should do it now that they can recover the money from cruisers in the casino whether they overnight in port or leave a little later. I understand clearing the Bermuda cut in the daylight hours so leave at dawn on Wednesday morning like they had done before with the NYC ship passing. It was nice when it was that way. :)

However, during spring and summer breaks and holidays the demographic is definitely much younger and the nightlife does not stop at 10pm. Kind of like the misconception that Carnival is only for spring break partiers. We have been on Carnival in the dead of winter when school was in session and it was just as grey haired as HAL at that time of the year.
chengkp75 Posted June 5, 2015 #11 Share Posted June 5, 2015 Posted itinerary is for 2 days 11 hours, allowing for the time to maneuver and dock, which is 12 knots. If she was to leave Bermuda at 8 am on Wednesday, that requires about 16 knots. If she were to stay until 5pm on Wednesday, that would require 20 knots. Given her horsepower rating, the 12 knot cruise would burn around 110mt/day, the 16 knot around 160mt/day, and the 20 knot run around 276mt/day. So, given the varying passage times, the 12 knot run burns 270mt, the 16 knot burns 320mt, and the 20 knot race would burn 414mt. At a price around $330/mt, the difference between the original itinerary and the 16 knot one is $16,500 and between the original and the 20 knot one is $100,320. From this, you can see how fuel consumption rises exponentially with ship speed. Could they make up the $16,500? Maybe, that's only $7.50 per person. Could they make up the $100k? Probably not, as that amounts to $45 per person. That's not counting port fees in Bermuda.
biker@sea Posted June 5, 2015 Author #12 Share Posted June 5, 2015 (edited) Don't they save a lot parked at the dock for three days compared to a cruise with a bunch of ports ? Edited June 5, 2015 by biker@sea

Sad circumstances, God Bless that family. The ship was 8 to 9 hours late to Bermuda. We got in at 8:15 PM. Lost the daylight hours on Sunday. We did stay till 6:00 AM Wednesday. We had 2 FULL days and 3 nights. I actually feel like we made out as far as usable time. While all the folks would have to be thinking about being back to the ship around 3:30-4:00 PM Tuesday, we now could enjoy a full USEFUL 2nd day. We passed the Breakaway and Summit on the way out off of St. George. It was a lot of fun, horns blaring and all. I could get used to that if it was instituted. Would pay $100 per person for conveinience too, especially if Sunday were still a half day.
time2cruise1 Posted June 6, 2015 #14 Share Posted June 6, 2015 When the Spirit did the Boston / Bermuda run it did stay overnight and swap the dock with the Dawn in the morning. There was only one berth then. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk - Jim
