Cash withdrawal machines on board QV?

We have a foreign exchange card which we can load with US$ to settle our account. However, I do definitely want to pay in cash and not use the card under any circumstances. Is there a cash withdrawal machine on board QV?

I don't believe there are any ATM machines on Queen Victoria. If you don't want to use any type of card then you will need to take $US cash with you or visit the Pursers office and change sterling into $US.

At check-in you will be asked for your credit cards details, if you decline you'll have to visit the pursers desk and discuss how you wish to make payment, until then you may find you are unable to make any onboard purchases.

Why? Surely its easier to settle the account with the card.

Failing that, draw the cash from the card at the pursers office and then pay in cash, but effectively that's the same thing.

I've just looked at up on the Cunard FAQ's and yet again they show they don't have a clue what they are doing:

Settling your on Board Account with Cash

You may choose to settle your account with cash however, a payment card must still be registered. If using cash your account must be kept in credit at all times.

Q. What do I need to do if I am paying my on board account in cash?

You will not need to register a card at check-in if you are paying cash for your on board account.

I was also under the impression that on ANY ship if you wanted to settle bill in cash they required a very large amount paid in at the beginning of the cruise. One assumes this is to stop people depositing a small amount of cash and then building up a large bill .

Would probably have to be in the 100's.

It's all computerized now. You'll find that once you spent whatever cash deposit you're cut off from further spending until you visit the purser's desk with more cash. A cash customer never gets the chance to run up a large bill.

People ask this quite a lot. I've still to hear on single advantage of paying by cash and one single disadvantage of not paying by card.

I believe that some people are discouraged from using a card because the card company levy a fee on transactions that involve foreign currencies. I don't understand why this is such a concern, it isn't as if they are buying a car but just settling a bar bill.

I take your point but .......

We were on a Princess cruise and had given the details of our US$ debit card so thought everything was hunky dory. We bought a few things on board and at the end of the cruise we settled our account. No problem. Then, we spent a few days in the US prior to flying home. Knowing we wanted to spend some money on presents we loaded the card with a couple of hundred dollars. Imagine our embarrassment when, on trying to make our purchase, the card was refused. We found that Princess had made holds on the card every time we spent money on board but these holds had not been taken into account on our bill. So for three weeks we were waiting for the money to be returned but, as we were back in the UK by this time, we could not use it.

I have since learned that this is normal practice in the hospitality industry and others but that does not help us. On the part of Princess and other cruise lines, I call this sloppy accounting and it makes me mad. Why the two systems cannot talk to one another I do not know.

So, if I can beat the system I will.

Our last cruise was with RCCI. I inserted credit card details at ONLI and once given the 'all clear' I deleted those details. Once we were on board, we went to the Purser's desk and informed them that we would be paying cash. No problem. There was a $ cash machine in the casino. All this worked well.

If we pay with a credit card, we will get a rubbish exchange rate and probably have to pay Cunard for the privilege. However, we get a very favourable rate of interest with our Fairfx debit card. So we would not actually be out of pocket by paying by card.
