Things to do around Anchorage

One of the cruises I'm looking at is a southbound one from Whittier. The dates would work out so that we could fly in a couple of nights early. If we stayed near the airport and rented a car for the day, what is there to do and see? Any recommended trips to do in a day away from Anchorage?

When we took our cruise tour three years ago, we just had one night in Anchorage and walked around near the Captain Cook hotel. We also walked some in the morning before leaving for Whittier. There wasn't a whole lot to see, but we enjoyed our dinner at Orso and some of the small shops nearby.

Lots to do and see around Anchorage. Depends on your interests and physical abilities. Send for a free visitor guide:

With a rental car the options really expand, but again, we don't know your interests or abilities.

With a rental car you can go all the way to Seward.

If you want to stay in Anchorage, the Parks Service has free films all day and some nice exhibits....your tax dollars pay for it, so you should see it. The ranger gives a historical stroll twice daily...free and there is usually a talk daily at around 2 PM. There is a short trolley ride that costs 20.00... Let's you see a bit of Anchorage that is not on the tourist route. We have an excellent museum within walking distance downtown...shuttle busses to the zoo and to the native heritage center...lots of stuff to do. Segway tours, horse and buggy rides...walks along the he coastal trail....shopping...very cut new dog store in the Capt Cook hotel that has some neat Alaska doggy stuff in it...quilting shops, good restaurants, music in the park on Fridays...a gorgeous fail on the Northern Lights in the performing Arts Center...about $12.00. I think you can find a few things to do.....:)

It’s nice to have a plan with contingencies although if you’re still looking for things to do when you get here, stop by the Log Cabin Visitor Center downtown for suggestions. Next door to that is the Visitor Center brochure area with info on dozens of tour operators. They administer the http://www.anchorage.net site mapleleaves noted.
