Tell me about the Triumph

I see that it's moving to New Orleans and we are probably going to book a 5 day on it for next summer. I was on the triumph 5 years ago, but I don't remember specifics about it. Has it been upgraded since then? Does it have water slides, Guys Burgers, seaside theater? How many pools? Best level to book a balcony cabin? Just anything you can tell me about it will be appreciated! When I was on it 5 yrs ago it was just me and my husband and we laid on the deck, played trivia, or karaoke'd the whole time lol We didn't pay attention to the other details. This time we will have 2 kids with us!

We were on it last year and it is still in great shape. Don't let its age fool you! The water slide isn't the biggest and fastest but the crew that runs it is top notch. It has all of the 2.0 upgrades including guys and iguana. Personally I think deck 7 is the best deck for the ship because it is sandwiched between floors of just staterooms. I like the carnival triumph but I'm glad Galveston is getting the liberty! [emoji4]

Was that before or after the fire? If since, it's been fixed up a bit.

It was before.

Thanks everyone, I appreciate the info! I am so excited that the Triumph is replacing the Elation! Elation is a great ship, but I hate that there are no balconies unless you get a suite.

We were on the Triumph in February of this year for a 10-day out of Galveston and will NEVER sail her again. We have sailed Triumph's sister ship Victory many times and really liked her so we figured Triumph would be great as well.

I don't even know where to begin but I'll try.

Broken glass doors

Elevators - some smelled like garbage for the entire cruise. Like rotting lettuce/vegetable type smell.

Carpet - stained and torn throughout the cabin areas

Pools- fountains did not work and rust stains in/about all pool areas

***The pool by the slide was always cloudy and we quickly figured out why. Upon exiting the pool our feet were blue. Apparently they either used the wrong type of paint to repaint the bottom.

Hot tubs - one set was out of order the entire cruise.

Slide- rusted not painted evenly

Cabin - we had an extended balcony cabin.

****There was an almost constant creaking noise. It wasn't the worst thing, but it was annoying.

Balcony- our balcony and corresponding windows were filthy along with the wood railing.

*****Around the 3rd day of our 10 day cruise the smell of sewage on our balcony was unbearable. We called guest services multiple times and they sent different crew to look into it. It was never fixed and the smell continued as we disembarked the ship. It was so bad the balcony could not be used. We would try to use it as we pulled into port and left as did our neighbors, but it got so bad none of the balconies were used.

I work in healthcare and my husband is a Firefighter/EMT so we both tolerate odors very well, but the sewage smell was too much to bear.

I have loved every Carnival cruise I have been on (11) and have never had any major complaints until this one. I will still sail Carnival just not on the Triumph.

I find your notes very interesting, because I was on the other leg of the Triumph's voyage in February, from San Juan back to Galveston. I didn't have any of the issues you listed:

* I didn't see any broken glass doors, or if I did I don't remember them

* I didn't notice any objectionable odors on any of the elevators. Granted, I didn't use them a whole lot, and when I did I mostly used the forward bank. I may have used the mid bank once or twice, and the glass elevators not at all.

* I didn't use the pools, the hot tubs, or the slide

* I had a porthole down in steerage and I found it very quiet most of the time. The PTs weren't in great shape, but no worse than the other OVs and PTs I've had. No objectionable odors here either.

I am, of course, not trying to belittle your experience. You saw what you saw, heard what you heard, and smelled what you smelled. But I didn't have any qualms about booking on the Triumph again. In fact, I'll be back on in January for 11 days. I'll have to make sure to see if I can spot any issues then. You have me a little worried.

Hmm, interesting because I've heard great things. Guess we shall see in October!
...If you do find any problems, please try to have them corrected so when we board in December, we will not encounter any.

Here's hoping you do have a great cruise. Bon Voyage!

We just sailed her last week -we loved the Triumph. I will agree that it may not be as flashy as the newer ships but they were constantly cleaning and polishing during our trip. I think they take great pride in their ship. Drinks and dishes were quickly hauled away in the buffet area and pools. I did not notice any odors on the elevators or hallways. The only thing I could smell from my balcony was the deep fried smell of French fries from Guys (guess we were close to the exhaust fan...). There were areas of paint peeling and some obvious wear and tear but overall it did not affect our vacation. The pools were Crystal clear and all hot tubs were open. They must have fixed the slide - I went one just to say I did and I didn't notice anything there.

We loved deck 8 because of its close proximity to 9 where everything happens on sea days, however, we were right under the seating area of the lido buffet and it was noisy late into the night and early in the morning for clean up and set up. I recommend deck 7 for a quieter stay.

Have a wonderful time on the Triumph - it's a great ship!

Oh Dear... We are cruising on this ship on Aug 24th. This will be our second cruise and first on Carnival. We cruised on RCI. It will be interesting to compare the two.

What are some of the good things to do and about this ship?

First, a cruise - whatever line you pick - is what you make of it. Second, enjoy your upcoming cruise and try not to compare the two lines. Third, good things to do: eat a Guy's burger, stand by the rail anywhere and watch the water as you cruise by, go to a Sea Day Brunch, watch a Dive-in movie, have one of the drinks of the day, order room service, and get off the ship in Progreso (it's not as bad as people say).

Most of all, have a great time!

I am looking forward to the Triumph for a B2B in Oct. I think I am most excited for the Alchemy Bar, since this will be the first time I have sailed on a Carnival ship that had one. Add to that my love of martinis, after a couple, I doubt I will even notice any other issues on the ship..LOL

Sailing on the Triumph next June, and I'm amazed at how varied the reviews of her are. Hoping for a great 1st experience because if it's not good I will never get hubby on another.

We were on her this March for the 12-day Journey to Discovery. Worn carpets? The ship is old so there isn't much you can do, but worn or not they were still cleaned. We had a cabin Center AFT on Deck 7 so we took the elevators in the back, center and forward and never smelled anything. Maybe between February and March the smell was taken care of.

We not swimmers but did watch a dive-in movie one night and a few kids were using the pool so I guess the pools are ok.

Food was good, not 4star but still enjoyable. Plenty of choices to choose from. And in 12 days the Chef never repeated the menu.

I was impressed with the ship's entertainment. Found it much better than what we have seen on the small to mid size RCL ships we cruise on.

I think you will enjoy the Triumph. I have to say this was our first cruise on the Triumph and was a little worried but enjoyed it so much I will definitely be booking another cruise on her when she comes to New Orleans.

The same can be said about any ship (Breeze, Sunshine, Dream). That being said, since it is your first cruise you have absolutely nothing to compare it to, so it'll be wonderful. June is, however, summer peak season so it may be crowded (FYI).

Don't worry, your first cruise will make you both very happy!

12 days . . . . can't even imagine. Jealous. Glad you enjoyed your journey!

Thank you and you are so right. Each cruise will be different. It looks like overall the ship is good and so is the service. All we really expect is a clean ship and decent service. We want to experience new things and relax.

I thank you for your responce.

We were on the 12 day cruise in March, I was not very impressed, especially with the MDR, I think we only ate in there twice. We already had the Galveston - San Juan B2B booked on the Triumph and we agreed that would be our last time on the ship.

However, DW's aunt received one of the $100 casino cruises in May, so DW went with her. She said the MDR had completely turned around, they ate there every night, the food was excellent and there was no waiting at the door to be seated. They never ate from the buffet the whole cruise.

She did mention that the guy running the dining room was one we had sailed with on the Imagination, and that was another ship where things were under control. He will be leaving the ship before the B2B so I just hope his replacement builds on his good work.

One of the things that really makes the ship look trashy is the dishes that other passengers leave outside their cabins, stacked up and uneaten food falling off the plates. All it needs is one person to catch the stuff with a foot and food is scattered all over. Don't understand why people have to do this.

  • 2 weeks later...

I've sailed on Carnival Triumph many times. It's fine. I'm not biased to any specific cruise line. I'm a past guest of several. If you are sailing strictly for the ship you will certainly find larger and nicer ships. If you are sailing to get away and forget about your problems and/or responsibilities and have people take care of you it's excellent.

We sail out of Galveston most often because it's convenient. It's 4 hours from door to port. Sometimes we make it in 3 1/2 if I'm not paying attention to my husbands speed and we only need one bathroom break. My husband and sons dive so Cozumel is their favorite dive spot. It's world class diving. The last time we sailed on the Triumph was December 2014. We came home very relaxed and feeling reconnected with our boys.

New Orleans is on my list of debarkation ports. I've heard the Mississippi is cool sailing.

You can see we're sailing on the Triumph without the kids in 2 weeks for our 25th. I'm going parasailing this time. I'm probably going to book an early January cruise on the Triumph to take everyone diving again during their winter break from college.
