Rbel4 Posted July 25, 2015 #1 Share Posted July 25, 2015 We have been reading that this year may experience a big El Nino season in the Pacific. We are scheduled for the 28 day round trip Hawaii/ South Pacific Crown Princess Cruise out of LA in mid October, 2015. Does anyone know how cruise ships avoid hurricanes on a route such as this? Are they able to sail around them or do go through storms in order to stay on schedule? Anyone have experience with this route during an "El Nino season"? Thanks

Thanks October is not in the traditional cyclone season for ports south of the Equator...Hawaii is not that much further north, so you should be OK. Ships will avoid rough weather if they do encounter lows.

Cruisin' Chick Posted July 25, 2015 #4 Share Posted July 25, 2015 On one of our Hawaiian cruises, the captain announced that he was steering the ship more south to avoid a storm. We in California will be keeping our fingers crossed for an El Nino condition.

Thanks Hey Rbel4, don't worry about a little storm as the Crown Princess should be able to handle it! Rare cr8tiv1 Posted July 26, 2015 #7 Share Posted July 26, 2015 You never know about the paths of hurricanes. Hawaii just had a far miss (to the north) in July. I had a condo unit destroyed by a hurricane on the last day of the hurricane season (November 30). I am sure the ship's captain will do all it can to avoid encountering any storms. Once it leaves Hawaiian waters, it becomes a Cyclone. Displaced Local Girl
