cruznjan Posted September 17, 2015 #1 Share Posted September 17, 2015 Does anyone know if/how the tsunami warning is affecting west coast cruises?
JLee1973 Posted September 17, 2015 #2 Share Posted September 17, 2015 It isn't.
BadJelly Posted September 17, 2015 #3 Share Posted September 17, 2015 Even if it was heading in that direction, a ship at sea would barely register it. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD
Viesczy Posted September 17, 2015 #4 Share Posted September 17, 2015 Deep water you'd not even notice it. Now a rogue wave, you might notice that if you found a "hole in the sea".
xlxo Posted September 17, 2015 #5 Share Posted September 17, 2015 Agreed.... deep water won't be an issue. Some Chilean shorelines report 14 feet waves. Much smaller shore waves away from Chile. The strategy is to stay on the boat. https://www.google.ca/search?q=chile+earthquake+tsunami+warning
riffatsea Posted September 17, 2015 #6 Share Posted September 17, 2015 Did you listen to the weather reports about the tsunami warning??? They were only talking about Hawaii as a slight possibility. NOone mentioned west coast USA at all!
SadieN Posted September 17, 2015 #7 Share Posted September 17, 2015 (edited) The EBS has had no tsunami warnings in SoCal. DD's college town in Far Northern CA is in a tsunami warning zone, she's had no sirens. Not all earthquakes produce the epic tsunamis. One year, in HI we had a tsunami warning. Emergency sirens blaring, scrollings on the TV. We were evacuated to a high point. The tsunami wave was almost nonexistent. CRUZBUDS Posted September 17, 2015 #9 Share Posted September 17, 2015 We were scheduled for the Spirit from S.D. after the Japan earthquakes a few years ago. The ship was delayed entering the harbor for a few hours because of the warnings. We were killing time waiting by a marina when we noticed it. The masts of the sailboats were moving and then they were still, moments later they started moving again then stopped. It was amazing, that much power from an event half way around the world. Rare Keith1010 Posted September 18, 2015 #11 Share Posted September 18, 2015 The only impact would be a ship docked in port if a Tsunami struck the port. It won't impact a ship at sea. Keith
navybankerteacher Posted September 18, 2015 #12 Share Posted September 18, 2015 At sea, a major tsunami would be experienced as being like a wave of perhaps two or three feet which was not followed by a trough - making it actually less noticeable than the ordinary waves experienced every day. Within a few yards of shore, the moving water "piles up" into the towering destructive surge. The only impact on a cruise resulting from a tsunami warning would be causing a ship to delay entering port - or perhaps sailing early.
