They xray baggage and in most ports you get to walk through a metal detector. Probably depends more on country of embarkation. Not like the airport but they are very careful about who gets on board which is fine with me.

In St Martin they took our main luggage away so I have no idea what happened with it. Our carry on luggage went through an X-ray machine and we went through one as well. We had two bottles of wine in our carry on plus a metal water bottle. They hand searched our luggage because of that.

We have cruised Windstar twice out of Barbados. Both times we have had bottles of rum in our luggage which we purchased as presents to take home. Never queried.

 

Our hand luggage was never scanned, we just walked onto the ship. No worries as we had the beverage package so no need to take alcohol on board.
