Just off the Oasis - Eastern - 4/2 Sailing- Cruising with kids

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I wanted to post a "mini" review for those of you cruising on the Oasis soon. I hope this information helps.

WHO WE ARE - Traveling were me, my hubby, my 5 yr old daughter, my best friend, her husband and their 8 yr old son. We are just regular ole, metro-Atlanta suburbanites. We eat at chain restaurants and aren't hard to please. Most everything we do is family oriented.

PRE-CRUISE HOTEL - We stayed at the Crown Plaza and it was fantastic, price good, beds super comfy. It is across the street from the port. The restaurant there was great for dinner. Perfect stay.

CHECK IN AT THE PORT - We drove and parked at the port. We arrived around 10:30 and it was very chaotic. Once we got parked and into the terminal, it was very easy and went by super fast... until we had to wait upstairs. The ship got in late and was waiting to clear customs. We were able to wait in the gold area, as our friends were gold (we were first time cruisers on Royal). Everyone waited (suite guests, platinum, diamond, etc.) an hour and then were able to board the ship in probably 15 minutes or less! So, except for the driving part and dropping off luggage and parking, the terminal was a breeze! In hindsight, we'll arrive at 1 next time and avoid lines! Also, the ship is moving to Port Canaveral, which will be great for us when we cruise on her again....closer and we like the port as well.

GENERAL OVERVIEW OF THE SHIP - SHE.IS.MASSIVE.AND.GORGEOUS! She is an amazing ship. We did so much on the ship during our week and still didn't do everything! There is so much to do, see and eat! The kids program was fabulous! I will caution you, though, that the ship has a lot of movement. We had very calm seas, beautiful weather, but it was very windy. I'm guessing it was the wind or the captain didn't have the stabilizers out? I don't know, but we felt TONS of movement. The bathing suits on the walls would move side to side. Movement was side to side and front to back. When in the Opal Theater for Come Fly With Me, it felt like we were going in a circle! It would go up, to the right, back and to the left and over again. A lady working in Guest Services said that it is usually rocky from St. Martin back to the Bahamas, so maybe that is it? I never got sick and it did not ruin my time whatsoever, but just be aware if you are on this ship.

SHOWS - We thought the shows were great! Again, we are just regular folks, and aren't hard to please. Our favorites, in order, were - Frozen In Time, Come Fly With Me, Oasis of Dreams and CATS. We enjoyed all of them! CATS was hard to follow, but you could get the jist of it being a story of redemption. All the performers were very good in all shows! A tip on the shows - make your reservations online as soon as you are able. We were able to book them in December. Also, arrive at least 20 minutes prior to show time to get a good seat!

CABINS - We had balcony cabin 9610. WE LOVED IT! If you can spend the money, get a balcony. You won't regret it! We thought it was a bit smaller than our prior cabin on Carnival (a smidgen smaller in width), but we thought it was much nicer than what we had previously on Carnival. The bathroom was adequate and we had plenty of storage space. The shower looks small, but I was able to shower with my 5 year old daughter and I'm a heavy-set lady, so it was plenty big. The beds were heavenly comfortable. I will say this... we are bed snobs. ha! We sleep on an ultra-plush, king-sized, pillow-top mattress at home and most beds don't size up, but this one was so comfortable. The sofa lets out to be a full sized bed, but we had our cabin steward just make up the bed as it was, as it was about the size of a twin size bed and perfectly comfortable for our daughter. Besides, it gave us more room this way. The TV is interactive. You can order room service, check your account, make reservations, etc. Really cool. Tips on the cabin - bring some magnetic hooks to hang up swim suits and bring an over the door shoe hanger to store all your bathroom items. Of course, I learned all this from Cruise Critic! :) Oh... our Cabin Stewart was Kuth (pronounced Keith) and he was great!!!!

FOOD - The food was excellent!!! We ate non-stop. Matter of fact, we spent $30 in ice cream from Cups n Scoops! My child is the ice cream monster! I've never spent that much on ice cream in a week before! haaa! Our favorites were - Breakfast at Wipe Out Cafe, Lunch at Park Cafe and Dinner in the Main Dining Room. FYI - we had a seat by the window, table 640 and our Waiters were Fabian and Vicky (a guy).... these guys were excellent. By day two, they knew our names, what we liked, had our Diet Coke waiting on us, the cheese rolls, etc. We like Windjammer too. There's only 3 tiny complaints we had on food.

The first was the eggs. The only place you can get a real egg is if you eat at Johnny Rocket's and order the breakfast sandwich, OR Wipe Out Cafe where they have made to order omelets or eggs however you like them. I can tolerate powdered eggs if they are seasoned right, but yall, these eggs were GROSS... so bland and fishy tasting. The good news is that Wipe Out is almost a secret as no one was up there! It was a great place to eat, everything hot and fresh!

The second was Sabor. We were horribly disappointed. What Mexican place doesn't have good ole cheese dip? And the chips were terrible. The table side guac was good, but other than that, not worth your money if you are used to eating good Mexican at home.

The third was Chops. Chops was good, don't get me wrong. But... it wasn't knock my socks off good. If it was just $40 for two people, then it would have been ok I guess. But $72... not worth that in my humble opinion.

All in all, you are much better off just eating the complimentary food. It is really, really good and you save some money... unless you are like us and eat $30 in ice cream. :) And yes, we also ate the compliment ice cream at least twice a day too, but when we rode the carousel, our daughter wanted her ice cream from Cups N Scoops too!

Room service food is good too. We ordered the spinach dip and cheese burger a LOT! We purchased the Royal Replenish drink package and we were very glad we did. I drink Diet Coke a lot and it was also nice to have bottled water and nice, cold non-alcoholic fruity drinks included! It was really useful at the pool on a hot, sunny day.... not to mention they were so big that I could share with my daughter. And the drink machines are not just junky machines with 4 selections. They are those big coke machines with like hundreds of selections. My tummy was upset one night, so my hubby was able to get me a ginger ale from the coke machine. Pretty nifty!

Oh, I must mention the pizza. The pizza was fantastic and always hot and fresh... even at 10 pm when we just "had" to eat! :)

Ok, one more. I FINALLY got to sink my teeth in that heavenly roast beef sandwich at Park Cafe. It was SO GOOD! We loved Park Cafe. The soups and salads were awesome too. So was the coleslaw. Oh goodness, now I'm wanting it again! :) Seriously though, hands down, the best lunch on the ship.

ADVENTURE OCEAN - If the fact that our kids cried when they had to leave tells you anything, then you know it was WONDERFUL! The kids LOVED it and it is so well laid out. We were worried that the kids would be upset since they could not be in the same class, but they didn't care. They made friends and had a blast. They were always making something, doing something, etc. By mid week, they were playing with their friends they met at Adventure Ocean at the pool. The staff was wonderful and caring. We used it about an hour a day most days and one day we did the afternoon session from 2-5. On the last day when we saw CATS and ate at Chops, we did both afternoon session and evening session until 8.

PORTS -

The Bahamas - Meh. We weren't there in port long enough to do a good excursion and didn't care for downtown much, as it is so dirty and chaotic. So, next time, we will just skip it and see more of the ship! The lighthouse, however, is cool to photograph during sail away.

ST. THOMAS - Love, love, love! We did a private excursion with Air Force One with Papa Bear. He had drinks for us and we toured in an open bus. We love Papa Bear and have a friend for life with him! We did sight seeing, shopped, did Mountain Top and Paradise Point and finished the day at Emerald Beach Resort at the beach (I think it is Lindberg Bay Beach?), which was pure paradise. Our tour was FANTASTIC. If you have a chance, do a private tour. It is worth the money and we LOVED Papa Bear. He was a fantastic historian and loves his island. We plan on flying to St. Thomas in the next few years and look forward to seeing him again! St. Thomas is gorgeous. The views are wonderful and shopping is great. The people are very friendly!

ST MAARTEN/ST. MARTIN - Love, love, love! Once again, we did a private excursion with Joyce Prince. This was actually our second tour with Joyce! We LOVE her! We toured with her in her van this time since we had 6 people. She had a car seat for my daughter and had drinks for us. She even had a little gift for my daughter this time! We did the same thing as St. Thomas... sight seeing, shopped, toured the island and finished the day at Le Gallion Beach (great for kids by the way). The island was not as pretty as the last time we went (maybe some hurricane damage?) and my friends didn't much care that goats, cows and chickens run around in the street on the Dutch side, but we love the culture there and love it! We love the French side and had a bakery stop at Seraphina's... soooo good. We ate lunch at a little local place I think in the beach town of Ansel Marcel or something like that? It was wonderful. Like Papa Bear, Joyce is a fantastic historian and loves her island. We will tour with her again when we cruise there! She is wonderful! We loved the island. The water is sparkling clear. We also really liked the open air market in Marigot.

Back to the ship!

Pools were great and we never had an issue getting a chair, and we went at spring break time! Our kids loved the kiddy pool area. Also, they keep a pool open at night and rotate and clean the closed ones... you know kids, gotta have a night swim, so we were very happy about this! They also provide warm towels at the pool as well as life vests for the kids who can't swim just yet. The ship was super clean and we were quite impressed. The customer service was stellar and if there was any issue, it was fixed immediately and then they would follow-up to make sure it was done correctly!

The public areas were gorgeous. One really cool feature is being able to avoid the casino. We aren't smokers and get wheezy when around it. The ship's elevator areas are interactive, so you know which elevator bank to take to get wherever you are going (dinner, show, etc.) to avoid the casino. Pretty cool! Also, for sail away, go to the Sun Deck by Adventure Ocean on Deck 14. It isn't a secret, but might as well be since there were only about 20 folks up there during sail away! It is gorgeous up there, right above the bridge and not crowded at all!

The Boardwalk and Central Park were amazing. We loved Central Park for its serene atmosphere and loved Boardwalk for all the fun things for the kids to do. The kids loved the carousel and as you know, we all loved Cups N Scoops! :) We also liked all the parades and character appearances! Oh, we did the Dreamworks Character Breakfast and it was awesome. The kids had a blast!

Don't let the size of the ship scare you. The only time the ship felt crowded was on embarkation day. Other than that, we never had an issue getting an elevator. If we waited, it wasn't more than a minute.

Overall, we had the cruise of our dreams. Our only regret is that it ended and we had to go back to real life! We have cruised on Carnival in the past and now that we have experienced Royal Caribbean, we are loyal Royals! We felt it to be more family oriented and less of a party crowd. It's ok if that is your thing... just not ours. :)

We plan on sailing on her again, doing the same itinerary next year or the next.

Hope this information helps and I hope you have as much of a fantastic time on the Oasis as we did!!!!

Wonderful review, thank you. You also reminded me of the name of the bakery in St. Maureen. So refreshing to read a review that doesn't bash what you've just spent a far amount of money on. Thanks!

Thanks Teacup! Amen to that... but worth every penny! :)

Good review, but timing is everything. With the glass smooth seas this week there has been no movement at all. It's truly impossible to tell if we are docked or at sea. Only looking outside will answer that question.

I'm also a big fan of the custom made guacamole at Sabor. So I see no need for cheese dip. Different strokes for different folks. Oasis is a fabulous ship, and a destination unto itself.

Thanks for the wonderful review as we will be on her in two days and was kinda fretting the size. All my other cruises have been Carnival but have wanted to try one of the big ones. We have no excursions planned yet so we will see after we get on if we want to do any of them. There is 4 of us going together and I know RC cabins are a bit smaller than Carnivals and we have done 4 to a cabin before and it was fine. You just can't be slobs that week..LOL

We are regular country Pennsylvania folk and are easy to please. I think the worst thing I would hate on a ship is very rude people and luckly I have not come up against to many so far. So glad you all enjoyed your cruise and hopefully we will do the same. Thanks for the tips also..

Kudos for the review (helpful to me as we're doing Oasis in Sept with our. 7 yr old DGD), but more importantly, kudos to you & your family. You sound like a wonderful, caring, loving group who have a way of looking at the bright side of everything. Glad you had a great time -thanks again!

PS:shhh! Don't tell everyone about the Wipe Out Cafe & the Park Cafe - I don't want them to get too crowded by September!

Great review- Just wondering how old your kids are to get some context on the Adventure Ocean comments.

Thanks

Great report!!!:D:D

We are taking our first Royal Caribbean cruise in June, on Oasis.

We are Carnival Cruisers.

Getting excited to be on this ship!!!:D

Thanks again!!!

You will love it! It just amazed us at how big she was, but how uncrowded it felt!

You will do just fine! Seriously, it only felt crowded on embarkation day and then it thinned out. You'll notice the cabin is a bit smaller than on Carnival, but just in width. Our daughter is 5 and of course she had to take her toys, so we made sure she kept them picked up after playing with them and put back in her little backpack. Those magnetic hooks helped us a lot in keeping things organized and off the floors! :) I also liked the fact that, as far as closet space, it had a top rail and a lower rail. Matter of fact, with 3 of us, we didn't even use all the storage space in the cabin!

Enjoy your trip!!!!

Thanks for the review. I have a question about the kids club. Are you able to register prior to sailing like on Carnival or do you have to wait until you're on the ship?

We registered online before we went. When you go to "open house" on day one, they'll ask you to fill out another form, but it is just one page and I had it filled out very fast. Just the basics, who can pick her/him up other than you, allergies, name, DOB, etc.
