Cuckoo clocks

Taking our first river cruise Viking Grand European Budapest to Amsterdam.

For those who have done this itinerary is there a place to buy cuckoo clocks?

We bought ours in Regensburg ...shop was recommended by our guide and it was wonderful. They helped me pick one that could survive the cat...and I wound up buying beer steins and a nutcracker as well. Mine is battery operated but you would never know to look at it. I wanted it on wall between DR and kitchen and couldn't fit a really big one. I also like that it has a sensor that recognizes darkness so cuckoo is quiet during the night. They run from about $100 and up to thousands. ...and they shipped it.

Best place to buy those clocks is in the Black Forrest area, like Triberg or Baden Baden.

I lived in Germany for four years.

Warning, most to these clocks don't last more than a few years.

I had one years ago my Mom bought somewhere in Germany, finally gave up the ghost!!!! I wonder why the clocks now dont last? On our itinerary next year (Amsterdam to Budapest) we are not going to the places you have mentioned.

Also most expensive place to buy them...I found my clock Baden-Baden to be quite a bit more than I paid in Regensburg.

My Mom had one over 40 years! Of course hers had to be hand wound almost daily while mine is 10 years old, battery operated and still going strong despite a certain feline's frequent attempts on the cuckoo! :D

Yours sounds like something I want. Was the shipping free? I live in Canada.

The Black Forrest clocks tend to be better quality. My Grandparents gave me one when I was a teenager and it lasted about two years.

When I went back to Germany, I looked at something really nice, like a Grandfather Clock. They had some very nice ones in Triberg. Still didn't buy one, since they were expensive.

I purchased one in the Black Forest for our Summer lake house. Growing up, my uncle of German decent always had one at his lake house and I had the fondest memories as a young girl watching it cuckoo. I now have a young Grandson and wanted to share my memories with him,

Our cuckoo clock is wonderful, made very well, and brings us great joy. Make certain you pay the price for a very good quality one. Ours is excellent.

I would LOVE to have a Grandfather's Clock....I have been fascinated with them since I was a child....we saw some beautiful ones in Germany too but holy cow...the prices...and can you imagine the shipping charges for sending it home?

I have a Grandfather's clock. I bought it here in the US 25 years ago. The problem now is that it's almost impossible to a clock repair specialist to service it. Mine still runs but it is supposed to be cleaned and oiled regularly.

As far as Cuckoo Clocks there are shops in almost every town. I think the name is Kathie Wolfgart. They do not allow you to photograph their merchandise. We didn't purchase but she sells many unique cuckoo clocks

The Black Forest, being the place where those clocks originate from, still produces the best quality I believe. My former boss liked them and bought them only in the Black Forest. As the OP is not going there, Regensburg sounds a good option. You can get cuckoo clocks in many tourist places in the South but the quality will vary a lot. They might not even be made in Germany...

Käthe Wohlfahrt is the name. A shop (chain) renowned for expensive quality Christmas decorations: http://wohlfahrt.com/en/

Rothenburg appears to have a specialist clock shop. In the online-photo you can see cuckoo clocks. The Bamberg shop is advertised as stocking cuckoo clocks, as well. So is the shop at Rüdesheim.

While I do not have a grandfather's clock (no space) I would not have a problem finding a clockmaker to service it. Are grandfather clocks not that common in the US? I mean they must have been made in the US a hundred years ago, or am I wrong?

Grandfather clocks were made in the US...Seth Thomas made some exquisite clocks. While the clocks are not as popular today as they were 40 years ago, I think the problem here is that watchmaking/clockmaking has died out as a career. For instance when we first bought our house here, 50 years ago, there was a clockmaker in town. Now he's gone, but there's no one to take his place. In the "old days" a man had a trade that his sons learned from him and they took over the business but now everyone wants a professional instead of a trade and it's getting harder and harder to find someone to fix the dishwasher or dryer.

10 yrs. old is long enough for me, it will probably outlast me LOL. Is there any particular shop I should look for in Regensberg?

Thank you hydrokitty, trades going downhill, so true. I have experienced such a problem here with professional artisan glassmaking (for replacing an old special window pane) recently.

It is great to own something that someone else has lovingly made with skill and dedication. I hope the op finds a cuckoo clock that is such an item, if not, something that at least comes close.

I'm sorry, but I don't remember the name, this was our first river cruise, but I do remember it wasn't far from where the ship docked. It was a very large store on the corner and they had a huge selection of clocks ranging from hundreds to thousands of dollars. Mine was around $450 and I picked a medium sized clock that has a pendulum but is battery operated...another nice feature is the light sensor...once it gets dark in the kitchen, the cuckoo goes to bed! I remember my Dad swearing at the clock when it cuckooed at midnight and he had to get up at 6 a.m. :D

No, shipping wasn't free but it wasn't outrageous and you do want it to be insured. I found that once I bought the clock I was able to include everything else I bought there for the same shipping cost....and I bought lots of things like beer steins for each of the boys, Christmas ornaments, glass ware for the girls...and steiff animals for the grandchildren. They shipped everything....even the magnet! Tip: take a photo of the clock after you've purchased it....it will help you recognize it when it comes and you'll need the photo if it's damaged. I learned that in Venice when I bought a Venetian glass wine decanter set and the gentlemen who waited on us (in a private room with wine, no less) advised that we take a picture for insurance purposes. I've been doing it ever since whenever I buy something expensive.

The store closed early the day we were there and I missed going! Should have stopped there first before doing some other running around. Easy to find the store though.

  • 2 months later...

We bought a clock at Cuckoo-Clock-Center-Passau, they only sell clocks made by 3 multi generation Black Forest clock makers. We paid 60 euro for shipping (delivered 2 days after we got home from the cruise) and we saved over 100 euro on taxes and a 5% cruise discount. We picked a more modern looking clock and love it.
